I left it out because they did not, nor were they given syphilis. In order to have a valid test you have to compare it against a know sample. In this case the 201 were African-Americans that did not nave the disease to compare results of tests on those that do to those that don't.

If you want to see if a egg floats in water with salt in it you have to prove is sinks in a control sample of water without salt in it.
