I love how he skipped ahead to werewolves in order to prepare Harry/Ron/Hermione for Lupin's "time of the month".

It shows that he cares and wants to protect them, even if he's a dickhead to them.

he still didn't like lupin, so he decided to do a lesson on werewolves to see if anyone would make the connection (as hermione did). He couldn't predict that they'd get into a predicament with Lupin in his wolf state and such, so it wasn't really that he was trying to "protect" them at this point in time.
