I'm glad people are keeping tabs on the countdown to New Horizons flyby (I've been doing that since the Jupiter fly-by), but another equally important thing to do is to follow MESSENGER's Mercury orbital insertion on 18th of March, 2011. That's another long-term project, launched in 2004, slowing down to Mercury's orbit by a number of fly-bys. And finally we may actually map Mercury, not just "half and a bit" of it. The little sun-scorched Mercury is always forgotten.
I was wondering something yesterday, would it possible to use Jupiter as a source of fuel in the far future when the sun runs out of hydrogen? How many days of "fuel" would Jupiter provide to the sun? If we are still alive when the sun turns into a white dwarf, we could reside on one of the Jovian planet's rocky moon and use Jupiter as a small star (if its possible to start the nuclear fission process in its core)
It's a possibility but by the time the Sun runs out of Hydrogen, it will just start fusing Helium and so on and so on until it gets to carbon. It will have expanded to consume Earth's orbit but after that the outer layers will be shed off and expand in every direction anyway as the core collapses in to form a white dwarf.
I hardly think we'd even stick around this solar system if our Sun was a Red Giant about to turn into a planetary nebula. Jupiter's moons wouldn't even be safe.
yea agreed, I forgot about the process where it overtakes earth as a red giant. I wonder how it will affect the gravity as a red giant? Will it draw the Jovian planets closer to itself or will they be flung out as it blows out its outer layer to expose as a white dwarf?
Your guess is as good as anyone else's. We've never actually seen the process of transition between a Main Sequence middle aged star expand into a Red Giant nor do we know how fast it occurs. Leading theories suggest it will just push Earth to expand its orbit a little and not be devoured. When it completely turns into a Planetary nebula, I am guessing it will probably sweep across and strip the planets of most of their atmosphere.
