nope sheila did not write this song its another prince penned song credited to the artist he gave it to this song was originally written for Apollonia 6
of course you can hear prince' production all through this track! sheila is a top percussionist and drummer in her own right,so she could,ve made it on her own anyway! but hey it,s cool stuff from the 80's often derided as the naff generation for music i beg to differ!!
@basherman69 Prince wrote all of the songs on this album. He probably wrote this with the intention of singing it himself, and when he gave it to Sheila he had to change the lyrics to fit the gender. Otherwise Sheila would be singing about her lesbo love for The Belle of St Mark - which wouldn't be a bad thing...
@Skechers1 To be honest with you, I know that Prince wrote the song, and probably for himself to release as a single. Also, when the song was released as the follow up to "Glamourous Life", it really didn't bother me that the 'belle" was a young man. It was still a nice song.
I made the previous post to be rhetorically sarcastic, but I wonder if Prince could have found a gender-specific term to replace "belle". "Beau" seems to me like a good word, just to start.
@liacashmere58 I could direct you to a video link (a Star Trek Phase II episode, "Blood and Fire") where there is lots of love expressed for "boy on boy" action. I got into a bit of trouble there with the "Collective" there when I expressed the opinion that I didn't want to see the boy on boy action twice.
Some things float our boats, and other things torpedo them to the bottom of the ocean.
@brionity I suppose. The Purple One did write and produce a lot of hits in the 1980s. Maybe that's how he can get away with having a male Belle of St. Mark in his song.
I LOVE THIS SONG. FIRST HEARD IT WHEN I WAS A KID, I'M 38 AND IT'S STILL A HIT. (TO ME) IT'S SIMILAR TO ANOTHER FAV OF MINE...ZAPP/ROGER RADIO PEOPLE. CHECK IT OUT.
OMG. My head! That's not Sheila E as we love her, that's could be named a blend of Pussycat (NL, known for hits like "Mississippi") and ABBA. Not my cup of tea, sirs. =D I prefer her (electro-)funky and acrid like in "A Love Bizarre".
Thanks to Mr. Prince for no longer watching her getting drowned completely in these campy schlager swamps.
Havent heard this for years...thanks for putting on it brings back great memories....

@robertmark34 This is just as produced as todays music.
i dont give in to that whole idea of music back in the day was better. its been good from day one, you just have to be there and be alive.
So many people say that new music is rubbish, yet all the stuff they say is the best, was once new music.....
