MELISSA, to answer your question, only a FREE MARKET (also known as CAPITALISM) can deliver lattes so efficiently and just the right amount at just the right places to meet everyone's needs, since supply always ends up equaling demand in a free market. And when GOVERNMENT INTERVENES and is in charge, it always does so inefficiently and sloppily and thus you get those shitty voting machines.
Don't you dare PheonixHeart1974 call anyone...in our political system even! Hitler. Ever ever ever ever. How dare you? Ever ever ever, and how dare you make fun of the Holocaust by comparing it to such innocent people.
Please tell me what Obama has done in the past 20 years. I can't seem to find anything of importance that qualifies him to be the president of the most powerful nation in the world.
no he lived off blow and skull and bones cum yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fuck off bush ur faggot and ur cuz kerry little bitches and when is there stupid old ass parents gonna die
Seeing this a few weeks after a lot of folks. I read about the debates and struck at how much I disagree with mainstream columnists. Joe Biden and Bill Richardson did quite well in the debate. Kucinich was shrill. Mrs. Clinton was competent as was John Edwards and Barack Obama.
Melissa, the people should monitor the voting NOT the gov. Wow! they have messed up every other thing they control why wouldn't they do the same with voting? With the Patriot Acts they can, on a whim, decide you are not 'qualified' to vote or not an American even if you & your ancestors were born here. Gov. regulation would make it more corrupt.
Who's to say that Hitler Clinton won't do the same as Billy? Tell us what she thinks we want to hear and then do the oposite when she gets in. She is not for freedom of the people, she is for big gov. control of the people.
Colleges are terrible in Europe? Do you have any idea what you're saying? College in USA is so easy, and that is mostly because teachers fear students' reviews, so they can't fail more than a fixed percentage of them, so most students pass even when they don't deserve it.That doesn't exist in Europe, so teachers can focus on teaching and giving fair grades. If that doesn't affect education, I don't know what does. Oh, yeah, and athletes don't get breaks, because teams are independent from schools.
Actually Europe has some of the finest institutions in the World. University of Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, London School of Economics, Paris, University of Vienna. The catch is students are divided at a very young age in to three tiers of schooling, which affects their advancement in society. We don't do that in the US, are schools are decent, but they could be much better, especially when it come to tuition costs
actually, it's very likely that you mean the swiss federal institute of technology in zürich (which is, in fact, in the top ten of most ratings,) instead of the university in vienna
Why not privatize social security? Its obvious that the government will only rob you of it. They have been doing it for 50 years. The less government in our business the safer we are. Everything they touch they screw up. Why do the masses think the government is smarter than they are?
The problem is not with government, the problem is the people who get elected to office. With the right people in office, government will serve you better than private corporations. Think about it: private corporations don't care if you are well served. All they want, is to make as much money as possible. So they'll cut back on service to you, so they save more money. That's why I'm against more privatization.
And you didn't bother to answer my question, have you ever live in NA and know what you're taling about with that regard? I never said earlier that NA was a special case, don't put words in my mouth. But in every part of the world whether it be NA, Europe, Asia, etc. I believe there are local factors which influence the markets.
I totally disagree. How much interest is your social security earning? Will it go to your family when you die? Will it even be there when you retire? The problem IS with government. It has gotten to corrupt no matter who's in office. If a private investment firm was screwing up my retirement plan I have a choice to go else where. If a private company has poor customer service would you shop there? When was the last time you went to a SS office? In the private sector a consumer has choices.
No, in the private sector you get screwed time and time again. Look at health care: big corporations do everything in their power not to pay your medical bills, while you thought you were covered. If they scew up anything, you have no choice to take your bussiness elsewhere: you will have lost everything. Why do you think Europe is beating the US in every single way? Because in the US, the country is run by big bussiness and Europe is run by governments.
I work on a college campus. We have tons of students here from Europe that want to make the U.S. home. If things were so good in Europe why are they here? I can provide you a # to my health ins company. I have never had a problem. I myself want to take care of myself and have choices. I do not need the govt to take care of me. I am a big boy and I want to make my own choices with my own money. What choices does the govt provide me?
Oh, sure there are Europeans who want to move to the US. As there are many Americans who want to move to Europe. What's the point? Is that supposed to support your theory? You're kidding, right? That's a strawman if I ever saw one. Good for you if you never had a problem. Why being so selfish only to think about yourself? What about millions of Americans who have nothing BUT problems? They get screwed and eventually, you wil. (In fact, you are, but you're not smart enough to realize it.)
You are the selfish one. You want me to provide for your health care? If you are sincere about freedom you would be here...not there. Bring yourself over here and I will help you out. Thats how it should be. Not you forcing yourself upon me by having the govt force me to take care of you.
You're just rehashing every right-wing talking point in the book. Nobody's going to force you to take care of me. In a non-profit healthcare-for-all system, everybody would pay for it by taxes and everybody would get help. Like in Europe, you pay a little more on taxes, say $100, but when you need a treatment that costs $800, you won't have to pay a single penny. Freedom is for people to not having their lives destroyed when they get sick, but that's what happening in the US now.
Actually I am an American living in Europe at the Moment in Britain. The National Health Service is free, the trade off is a waiting period that goes from most needed to least needed. I guess you have to ask yourself do you want to pay more and wait less, or do ou want to have it "free" and have a longer time in getting the treatment which you deem nessisary.
Treatments that are necessery get taken care of immediatly. Besides, waiting isn't very long. But, the European systems proved health care for all, whereas the American system doesn't provide health care for over 45 million people. Is that fair?
As the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II approaches, Americans must ask themselves a troubling question: Did Hayek's concerns become reality - have Americans, in fact, traveled the road to serfdom the past fifty years? Or, put another way, did the Nazis lose the military battles but win the war for the hearts and minds of the American people?
What about us who make above min. wage. Do we get the same raise as everyone else. The answer is no, so basically you have just brought me closer to the level of income that can be made without an education.
The 'debate' wasn't fair. The 'top three candidates' got all the questions, Gravel and Kucinich got almost nothing, and virtually no time to answer. Also, notice the staging: Clinton, Obama and Edwards in the center, so everybody could see them, and Gravel and Kucinich on the far left and far right, almost out of sight.
why do they end their messages with "i approve of this message"? that's old school, and isn't necessary any longer. and they say they want change and be progressive...
In the US, only rich kids can go to college, or kids who are good at sports, who get a scholarship. In Europe, college quality is perfect. I know, I study at one of them.
I'm in college. I'm not rich, didn't get scholarships, and don't play sports. It just takes a bit of effort. Quality is much lower at most European colleges, unless you get into one of the top schools. The free, public colleges are terrible in comparison to the U.S. Their secondary is exceptional, and is set up just as ours should be (vouchers!)
I don't know who put that nonsense in your head. Might've been right-wing propagandists who want to make you fear anything paid for by the state. College should be for everybody, like in Europe. And no, European colleges don't have low quality.
Of course you take it as a "bullsh!t" response, because it's diffrent from your oppinion! If you want to make a point, don't insult, inform!! Why can't people be civil today?
What the real problem is is the Federal Reserve System (check out the documentary Money Masters). Did you know the Fed is help by private investors? They then print the US money, with no backing i might add, and charge an interest for its use (aka inflation). Lincoln had it right when he printed the greenbacks which remained in circulation until 1994.
Wow... how harsh Luilak! Gotta love the partisan responce simply since it doesnt agree with your opinions. But your point is untrue as I know for sure happens in Canada as well.
Raise minimum, the employer obviously then has to make the new payroll, so he raises prices to compensate and keep his profit margins... voila, INFLATION!!
You're right, it is a simplified answer (how can I write more then a couple paragraphs on YouTube comments?). And how does it not ring true? Prices are going up all the time... think of the last 1 yr, 2 yrs, 5 yrs, 10 yrs, etc. Using lunch as an example, I remember when it cost me less then $5 to buy a decent lunch (maybe 10 yrs ago) and as of a couple yrs ago it was around $10. Now its broken that barrier too!
Yes, prices go up all the time, that's right. And THAT'S why we need to raise the minimum wage: to make sure people will be able to buy what they need, and not having to work 3 jobs to get around.
Don't pretend that we have some kind of 'special' economics that differs from the rest of the world. It was just one example. Reality is: prices don't go up because of raising the minimum wage. I don't know who told you that fairy tale.
Yes, but purely raising minimum wage in order to combat poverty is ridiculous, which is what I meant (I can understand the confusion, my apologies). Minimum wage does need to get raised in certain circumstances.
Yes, raising minimum wage is a *perfect* measure to combat poverty, because it will stop people from having to work 3 jobs just to get around. It will allow them to get more money. You know, not being poor anymore.
If ONLY the minimum wage goes up, then companies will likely start raise their prices on consumer goods and thus cause inflation. If there is a way to prevent this from occurring, I'm all for it. Note that this not mean I'm against waging minimum wage, just not without there being some counter balance method to make sure it doesn't go to waste.
Prices will always go up, not just because we raise the minimum wage. Why don't all prices go up where I live, in The Netherlands, whenever the minimum wage is raised?? Because that's not the way the economy works.
Well, you are right that no one should need 3 jobs to make ends meet, but in some cases its becoming more like that in North America. I dont know why more prices dont go up in the Netherlands, you're in a better position to answer that then I am so enlighten me. Here in NA however, it would seem to work more the way I described.
Prices may go up faster in NA, but who says that's due to raising minimum wage? You know who keeps telling raising minimum wage will make prices go up? The big bosses, the employers, the big guys leading the companies: because they don't want to pay their employees more, so they trick the public with their false arguments.
That's how the economy works here. Explain to me how buying a coke use to cost a quarter about forty years ago and costs from a buck 25 to 75 now. Was it because the company could afford to do that, or because their customers afford pay it?
There are a lot of circumstances that influence prices. For example: when *less* people buy a product, they got to raise the price to make the same amount of money. Also, when ingredients get scarce, they become more expensive and they have to raise the prices. So there's not just *one* reason prices go up.
"Also, when ingredients get scarce, they become more expensive and they have to raise the prices."
Obviously! That's supply and demand and I never argued that point. I hope you don't believe the economy is as simple as that, though it would be nicer if it was.
No, the point I was making was that economy indeed is NOT as simple as that. However, you seem to think it's that simple, because you think there's only one reason for prices going up.
Wow, actually I said it would be nice if it WERE simple as that but it ISN'T! Again, don't put words in my mouth. I know there are other factors of course.
I'm still baffled why you didn't answer my question... I'll ask again (for the 3rd time), have you ever lived in NA and understand the specific economics of this region?
I don't have to put word in your mouth. You said the reason prices go up, is increase of the minimum wage. So apparantly, you think economy is that simple and there's only one reason for prices going up. I will not answer your question, as it is of no relevance for the discussion.

I would vote for someone who has a chance of winning. Too bad I can't. Kucinich doesn't seem to be winning, despite his good intentions.

Kucinich really blew it with that "text peace" crap. I don't know what he was thinking. He needs to be more articulate and stop spewing out these meaningless catch phrases. "Strength through peace," "text peace" blah blah. I love Kucinich and hope he wins, but he needs to realize that shit doesn't connect with people.

The solution?

Loved Obamas line on minimum wage. Overall, I feel he does not enjoy this format of debating. But still manages quite well.
duhduh666 4 years ago 2
Seeing this a few weeks after a lot of folks. I read about the debates and struck at how much I disagree with mainstream columnists. Joe Biden and Bill Richardson did quite well in the debate. Kucinich was shrill. Mrs. Clinton was competent as was John Edwards and Barack Obama.
duhduh666 4 years ago
Melissa, the people should monitor the voting NOT the gov. Wow! they have messed up every other thing they control why wouldn't they do the same with voting? With the Patriot Acts they can, on a whim, decide you are not 'qualified' to vote or not an American even if you & your ancestors were born here. Gov. regulation would make it more corrupt.

Oh, yeah, and athletes don't get breaks, because teams are independent from schools.
lobizao2 4 years ago
obviously you havent gone to the University of California, where a lot of the classes there is a 70% fail rate, with very smart students

Why do the masses think the government is smarter than they are?
gungho2033 4 years ago
The problem is not with government, the problem is the people who get elected to office. With the right people in office, government will serve you better than private corporations. Think about it: private corporations don't care if you are well served. All they want, is to make as much money as possible. So they'll cut back on service to you, so they save more money. That's why I'm against more privatization.
Luilak 4 years ago
And you didn't bother to answer my question, have you ever live in NA and know what you're taling about with that regard? I never said earlier that NA was a special case, don't put words in my mouth. But in every part of the world whether it be NA, Europe, Asia, etc. I believe there are local factors which influence the markets.
jonnyk81 4 years ago
I totally disagree. How much interest is your social security earning? Will it go to your family when you die? Will it even be there when you retire? The problem IS with government. It has gotten to corrupt no matter who's in office. If a private investment firm was screwing up my retirement plan I have a choice to go else where. If a private company has poor customer service would you shop there? When was the last time you went to a SS office? In the private sector a consumer has choices.
gungho2033 4 years ago
No, in the private sector you get screwed time and time again. Look at health care: big corporations do everything in their power not to pay your medical bills, while you thought you were covered. If they scew up anything, you have no choice to take your bussiness elsewhere: you will have lost everything. Why do you think Europe is beating the US in every single way? Because in the US, the country is run by big bussiness and Europe is run by governments.
Luilak 4 years ago
I work on a college campus. We have tons of students here from Europe that want to make the U.S. home. If things were so good in Europe why are they here? I can provide you a # to my health ins company. I have never had a problem. I myself want to take care of myself and have choices. I do not need the govt to take care of me. I am a big boy and I want to make my own choices with my own money. What choices does the govt provide me?
gungho2033 4 years ago
Oh, sure there are Europeans who want to move to the US. As there are many Americans who want to move to Europe. What's the point? Is that supposed to support your theory? You're kidding, right? That's a strawman if I ever saw one. Good for you if you never had a problem. Why being so selfish only to think about yourself? What about millions of Americans who have nothing BUT problems? They get screwed and eventually, you wil. (In fact, you are, but you're not smart enough to realize it.)
Luilak 4 years ago
You are the selfish one. You want me to provide for your health care? If you are sincere about freedom you would be here...not there. Bring yourself over here and I will help you out. Thats how it should be. Not you forcing yourself upon me by having the govt force me to take care of you.
gungho2033 4 years ago
that's not exactly how it works and yes you are selfish
huckleberry1979 4 years ago
You're just rehashing every right-wing talking point in the book. Nobody's going to force you to take care of me. In a non-profit healthcare-for-all system, everybody would pay for it by taxes and everybody would get help. Like in Europe, you pay a little more on taxes, say $100, but when you need a treatment that costs $800, you won't have to pay a single penny. Freedom is for people to not having their lives destroyed when they get sick, but that's what happening in the US now.
Luilak 4 years ago
Actually I am an American living in Europe at the Moment in Britain. The National Health Service is free, the trade off is a waiting period that goes from most needed to least needed. I guess you have to ask yourself do you want to pay more and wait less, or do ou want to have it "free" and have a longer time in getting the treatment which you deem nessisary.
Cheers from the UK,
dbeehler05 4 years ago
Treatments that are necessery get taken care of immediatly. Besides, waiting isn't very long. But, the European systems proved health care for all, whereas the American system doesn't provide health care for over 45 million people. Is that fair?

As the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II approaches, Americans must ask themselves a troubling question: Did Hayek's concerns become reality - have Americans, in fact, traveled the road to serfdom the past fifty years? Or, put another way, did the Nazis lose the military battles but win the war for the hearts and minds of the American people?

Vote for the female or the black guy, that's what is being shoved down our throats?
Obama was asked more questions than anyone on the panel yet he is the most unexperienced, so how does that make any sense whatsoever?

The 'debate' wasn't fair. The 'top three candidates' got all the questions, Gravel and Kucinich got almost nothing, and virtually no time to answer. Badergader 4 years ago
free public college would also lead to the same quality college as Europe...the money is there for students who want to go here in the states
hitlerANDcosby 4 years ago
In the US, only rich kids can go to college, or kids who are good at sports, who get a scholarship. In Europe, college quality is perfect. I know, I study at one of them.
Luilak 4 years ago
I'm in college. I'm not rich, didn't get scholarships, and don't play sports. It just takes a bit of effort. Quality is much lower at most European colleges, unless you get into one of the top schools. The free, public colleges are terrible in comparison to the U.S. Their secondary is exceptional, and is set up just as ours should be (vouchers!)
hitlerANDcosby 4 years ago
I don't know who put that nonsense in your head. Might've been right-wing propagandists who want to make you fear anything paid for by the state. College should be for everybody, like in Europe. And no, European colleges don't have low quality.

Increasing minimum wage will most likely cause inflation and thus making 9 an hour seem like 6.50.
JackiJinx 4 years ago
Bullshit Republican talking point. It didn't cause inflation in any other Western industrialized country. Take your nonsense elsewhere.
Luilak 4 years ago
Of course you take it as a "bullsh!t" response, because it's diffrent from your oppinion! If you want to make a point, don't insult, inform!! Why can't people be civil today?
Sonofgoku1 4 years ago
I don't insult JackiJinx, I call the talking point what it is: bullshit. And this isn't about opinions, but about *facts*.
Luilak 4 years ago
I'm a libertarian. Nice of you to assume I'm a stereotype though, that just adds to your credibility and debating skills.
JackiJinx 4 years ago
You shoudn't criticize other people's debating skills and credibility, when you come up with nonsense yourself.
Luilak 4 years ago
What the real problem is is the Federal Reserve System (check out the documentary Money Masters). Did you know the Fed is help by private investors? They then print the US money, with no backing i might add, and charge an interest for its use (aka inflation). Lincoln had it right when he printed the greenbacks which remained in circulation until 1994.
jonnyk81 4 years ago
Wow... how harsh Luilak! Gotta love the partisan responce simply since it doesnt agree with your opinions. But your point is untrue as I know for sure happens in Canada as well.
Raise minimum, the employer obviously then has to make the new payroll, so he raises prices to compensate and keep his profit margins... voila, INFLATION!!
jonnyk81 4 years ago
It's not about opinions, but about facts. You give an over-simplification that doesn't ring true.
Luilak 4 years ago
You're right, it is a simplified answer (how can I write more then a couple paragraphs on YouTube comments?). And how does it not ring true? Prices are going up all the time... think of the last 1 yr, 2 yrs, 5 yrs, 10 yrs, etc. Using lunch as an example, I remember when it cost me less then $5 to buy a decent lunch (maybe 10 yrs ago) and as of a couple yrs ago it was around $10. Now its broken that barrier too!
jonnyk81 4 years ago
Yes, prices go up all the time, that's right. And THAT'S why we need to raise the minimum wage: to make sure people will be able to buy what they need, and not having to work 3 jobs to get around.
Luilak 4 years ago
Have you ever lived in NA? If not, then maybe you shouldnt claim to be right about something you no nothing about.
I completely admit I'm ignorant to the specific economics of the Netherlands, there's no shame in that... lol.
jonnyk81 4 years ago
Don't pretend that we have some kind of 'special' economics that differs from the rest of the world. It was just one example. Reality is: prices don't go up because of raising the minimum wage. I don't know who told you that fairy tale.
Luilak 4 years ago
Inflation will always happen, the rise in minimum wage is required to keep up with changing prices..
footballjb28 4 years ago
Yes, but purely raising minimum wage in order to combat poverty is ridiculous, which is what I meant (I can understand the confusion, my apologies). Minimum wage does need to get raised in certain circumstances.
JackiJinx 4 years ago
Yes, raising minimum wage is a *perfect* measure to combat poverty, because it will stop people from having to work 3 jobs just to get around. It will allow them to get more money. You know, not being poor anymore.
Luilak 4 years ago
If ONLY the minimum wage goes up, then companies will likely start raise their prices on consumer goods and thus cause inflation. If there is a way to prevent this from occurring, I'm all for it. Note that this not mean I'm against waging minimum wage, just not without there being some counter balance method to make sure it doesn't go to waste.
JackiJinx 4 years ago
Prices will always go up, not just because we raise the minimum wage. Why don't all prices go up where I live, in The Netherlands, whenever the minimum wage is raised?? Because that's not the way the economy works.
Luilak 4 years ago
Well, you are right that no one should need 3 jobs to make ends meet, but in some cases its becoming more like that in North America. I dont know why more prices dont go up in the Netherlands, you're in a better position to answer that then I am so enlighten me. Here in NA however, it would seem to work more the way I described.
jonnyk81 4 years ago
Prices may go up faster in NA, but who says that's due to raising minimum wage? You know who keeps telling raising minimum wage will make prices go up? The big bosses, the employers, the big guys leading the companies: because they don't want to pay their employees more, so they trick the public with their false arguments.
Luilak 4 years ago
That's how the economy works here. Explain to me how buying a coke use to cost a quarter about forty years ago and costs from a buck 25 to 75 now. Was it because the company could afford to do that, or because their customers afford pay it?
JackiJinx 4 years ago
There are a lot of circumstances that influence prices. For example: when *less* people buy a product, they got to raise the price to make the same amount of money. Also, when ingredients get scarce, they become more expensive and they have to raise the prices. So there's not just *one* reason prices go up.
Luilak 4 years ago
"Also, when ingredients get scarce, they become more expensive and they have to raise the prices."
Obviously! That's supply and demand and I never argued that point. I hope you don't believe the economy is as simple as that, though it would be nicer if it was.
jonnyk81 4 years ago
No, the point I was making was that economy indeed is NOT as simple as that. However, you seem to think it's that simple, because you think there's only one reason for prices going up.
Luilak 4 years ago
"you seem to think it's that simple"
Wow, actually I said it would be nice if it WERE simple as that but it ISN'T! Again, don't put words in my mouth. I know there are other factors of course.
I'm still baffled why you didn't answer my question... I'll ask again (for the 3rd time), have you ever lived in NA and understand the specific economics of this region?
jonnyk81 4 years ago
I don't have to put word in your mouth. You said the reason prices go up, is increase of the minimum wage. So apparantly, you think economy is that simple and there's only one reason for prices going up. I will not answer your question, as it is of no relevance for the discussion.
