I have followed your excellent tutorial but the finished video (from 82Mb to 19.5Mb) has a lot of black 'blocks' in it. I have done it twice and both are the same, any ideas?

The file has converted it into a new file with a RealPlayer icon now is that ok?

@franpip1 The RealPlayer icon just means that RealPlayer has been associated with that file format and will play that video. I recommend installing the free VLC media player as it is far superior, free and open-source. I also recommend playing it in VLC and seeing if black blocks are still visible.

Is there any way to make the recording not take as much space besides lowering the quality? If i had a 5 minute video, it would probably take up my entire hard drive since 1 minute of footage takes up about 3 GB.

@GT101boy lossy compression will always reduce quality, but the reduction is dependant upon the compression level. For example an CD-ROM track compressed to MP3 at 320kbs sounds almost exactly the same. But the same track compressed at 96kbs sounds muddy, that's because it's smaller file size and has lots more information, lowing the quality. The same logic applies to video compression.

@ThIsLiFeIsMuZiC sorry for the late reply. If the video is already compressed then compressing it again wont reduce it my much. It's a little like zipping a zip file, it's already small and wont get much smaller. Sorry. You might want to experiment with the video quality settings, this can reduce the file size but you will also reduce the quality.

@cheezypi3 it probably outputted the video in RAW uncompressed format, which is good when editing because you don't lose quality but when you've finished editing you probably want to try exporting using a compressed format like .h264.

Great tip. Thanks for the vid. This seems to work better than anything I've tried for reducing file size whilst maintaining as much quality as possible (both video & audio quality). @xxTotalBritxx You might not have the audio codecs to playback the new audio. Try installing VLC and playing the video in that.

@maithilireddy you can't really compress a video that has already been compressed, that is without losing more quality. It's a bit like ZIPing a ZIP file again, it won't go any smaller.

You could try resizing the video to smaller dimensions, or if you could even look at the advanced video setting and 'smooth' the video which helps compression.

Another suggestion is reduced the audio bitrate and even turn it mono if you don't mind loosing an audio channel.

@Mrdiver8 It all depends on many factors, is the original video compressed or RAW? What's the desired output video size? How much quality loss are you happy to live with? Is audio quality important to you?

Try the default settings are seeing how big the output is then experiment with dimensions, quality and audio bitrate.

@turb0mash it all depends on the source video and they quality settings you choose. This form of video compression is known as lossy because it removes information from the original source video. A lot of the information in uncompressed source video isn't needed and you usually can not notice the difference. However, if the original source video is already compressed with codec such as xvid, divx or h264, then you'll only get the video smaller by reducing quality.
