  • The captain's only conviction in the case was for negligently discharging oil. He was fined $50,000 and this summer will begin performing 1,000 hours of community service, picking up litter along Alaska highways. After his trial Captain Hazelwood became a teacher at a maritime academy. Recently, he's been working as a consultant for a law firm in New York.

  • 4:20 for presentation

  • As it turns out captain Joseph Hazelwood was not even responsible for the accident. He set the right course and left the bridge to his crew like any captain would do. And his idiot crew screwed up and missed the turn that Captain Hazelwood instructed. He was blamed anyway and fired and his life ruined because of lack of competant journalists in this country only looking for the sexy story.

  • 5:22-5:23 has an error. It suddenly changes scene when prev scene not finished

  • It was an OK film. Some parts seem to be missing or something; a few sections of the film "skip" or seem to have been poorly edited "out". Nonetheless, thumbsup for the positive thinking and positive action in posting this. Peace.

  • 22 yrs later

dig a hole on any beach

    in prince william sound

and there will be oil ..

    forever and ever...

    was it worth it...

  • @chena3 he'll yes it was worth it

  • Hang Exxon Mobile and slit the goddamn throat of BP!

  • this is ok movie..watched the full movie in webmovietube for free

  • Nice video so why dont do subtituls in spanish because im Mexican 12 years old and my teacher homework me search for Exxon Valdez

  • He said it could have been Bp and what do you know it was :(

  • i have found a website webmovietube to watch movies for free..njoy

  • made my day!!! thanks webmovietube

  • With all the hard work and skill it takes to become a Licensed Merchant Marine Officer (let alone a Master of Steam/Motor Vessels of Any Tonnage) one might ask the conspiracy theory retards on this wall: Why would anyone with that license run a ship aground "on purpose" (phuqueU, I am looking at you) and dance the thin line between jail and freedom? The answer is you're an idiot... or a prepubescent teen with no life. Go outside, get laid... go do SOMETHING with your life.

  • This was done on purpose too. All the oil spills were deliberate, just like the BP Spill. These corporations don't take any chances with money (oil), unless they have a hidden agenda. Almost all the big corporations are run by Secret Society Filth.

  • i had to this 4 home work ;{

  • @yman2468 same D:

  • "Some" oil? Exxon SHOULD have been fined so much, that it would bankrupt them;same with B.P. B.P broke Exxon's record. People serve jail time from operating a car while drunk, why not ships?

  • @HUSKY57887 uhhhh ship operators and owners do go to jail.... what rock have you been hiding under? Pop open the CFR's sometime and read a book like a big boy instead of basing all your knowledge on one internet video.

  • @DeckApe85 Aparently as big of one asyou;Hazelwood, any of his crew,or any Exon exect. ever served time. Do YOUR research.

  • @HUSKY57887 wow... are you twelve years old or something? That was the poorest constructed rebuttal I have ever seen in my life. Higher authorities than you or me acquitted Hazelwood, and he STILL has his Master's License. Check. Mate.

  • Why are there parts for this video cut out! I would hate to miss any important information that was over looked!

  • thank god for America !

  • FUCKA YOU BP!!! Anda FUCKA YOU EXXON!

  • @haxor758 & ENBRIDGE TOO.

  • i said rum and coke on the rocks not run the boat on the rocks

  • Now the biggest oil spill is much bigger, thanks BP. This spill looks quite small now((

  • BP Oil Spill 2010 < Exxon Valdez Oil Spill 1989

VALDEZ WAS WORSE THAN BP'S NOW.

  • Did Exxon clean up their mess or did they have somebody else to do it for them?

  • The pictures are terrifying !

  • The images of the oil covered birds in the Gulf of Mexico tell me all I need to know about oil.

  • In the early 20th century, we began to make the transition from using animals for transportation to using machines. Now we have to make the transition from using fossil fuels to using renewable energy. It won't be easy to make the change, but we have the technology to do it and there is no other choice. The Earth can no longer absorb the massive amounts of pollutants from the use of fossil fuels.

  • @Dragonfly6160 Yes we do have to make the transition some day, but until we do fossil fuels are NOT obsolete.

  • @Dragonfly6160

Animal transportation IS renewable. I'm not against new technologies for solar, wind etc. but there are circumstances animal transport would be possible and desirable.

  • Greg Palast stated in 2008 "Forget the drunken skipper fable. As to Captain Joe Hazelwood, he was below decks, sleeping off his bender. At the helm, the third mate would never have collided with Bligh Reef had he looked at his Raycas radar. But the radar was not turned on. In fact, the tanker's radar was left broken and disabled for more than a year before the disaster, and Exxon management knew it. It was [in Exxon's view] just too expensive to fix and operate."[12

  • What is he drunk??

  • DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME SUGGESTING SOLUTIONS,,JUST READ ABOUT THIS CRIMINAL>>>Joseph Jeffrey Hazelwood was the captain of the Exxon Valdez during its 1989 oil spill. He was accused of being drunk at the time of the accident, though at trial he was cleared of this charge. Hazelwood was convicted of a misdemeanor charge of negligent discharge of oil, fined $50,000, and sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service. HE HAS VERY GOOD FRIENDS IN THE POLITICIAN FIELD..HE SHOULD GO TO THE ELECTRIC CHAIR

  • The use of petroleum and other fossil fuels has been obsolete for 35 years. This is not a "Liberal" or a "Conservative" issue. We must make the transition to renewable energy right now in order to save the planet.

  • But cpt hazelwwod was not in charge before the crash. Exxon company policies had the greatest role to play in the many cuases of the crash.

  • for the people who dont know the captain who crashed this ship was drinking be4 they departed

  • all bow to joe hazelwood!

  • 4:28...awkward/verbal irony:)

  • This so called "disaster" was all hype! DRILL BABY DRILL

  • it's sad we should stop oil digging and find another way

  • Prince Rupert and Lord Kitimat would be very upset still.

  • Talking about the BP's rig, not exxon valdez

  • That's another thing...there has been no formal investigation of what went wrong to cause this event. Only speculation at this point. While I am against letting foreign prospectors harvest our resources, I don't think they should be convicted before a trial has taken place. This is getting out of hand. There is a due process.

  • i wonder what percentage of oil transports, rigs, or containers never fail. How much oil is leaked versus what is not? Is it similar to the number of home fires and homes that never catch fire? My point is that we shouldn't abandon things because of what may happen. Instead, we should improve technology and technique in hopes of preventing instances or at least improving the effectivness of how they are handled

  • It could have been BPs LOL! "well it is this time 8:34"

  • "what would become the largest oil spill cleanup in history." ... that is until 20 years later when BP would cause the worst ecological disaster in history.

  • bp made $6,000,000,000 /thats 6 billion in 3 months thanks to u hummer drivin cadillac pushin suburban ridin excursion dragin sons of bitches!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @tonmagicwon Those Suburbans sure are nice, aren't they. I'm sure if you could afford one, you'd have no problem riding in one. I recommend the Silverado. They're sweeeeet! 315hp at your service.

  • @rumschlager u dont even know me u fucktard i dont drive dumb american clonkers, ill save that 4 you ,i drive a fine german made e class amg 500 hp ,u toolbox !

  • @tonmagicwon You DO NOT drive an E Class. Come the fuck on, ha, ha....you do not drive an E Class.

HE, HE, HE, that's a good one....I can't stop laughing.

  • Down with Exxon and BP!

    no oil company is clean!

  • @RuralCoconut Down with the oil companies, eh? Hope you like "alternative" transportation, like a bike or your two feet (assuming you can walk). You probably circle the parking lot looking for the closest available parking space. Oh, and that patio furniture you like so much? Can buy it. They don't make it. Why do people NOT understand this shit?

  • Welp sorry Valdez we have a bigger problem here in 2010

  • And to think. Not even a year after this video is made - another spill.

  • valdez got repaired, renamed the boat several times and carried oil again, it now carries cargo now, just google it and you will find more info

  • Its amazing how some people JUST do not learn from the past mistakes of our arrogance and selfish ways.

  • You want change? Shoot these oil spillers in the head.

  • How could Alaska elect "Drill Baby Drill" Palin for governor after this?

  • @Dragonfly6160 you're an idiot

  • @ejgeee77 Calling people names is meaningless. Post whatever argument you have against my comment.

  • @Dragonfly6160 Because people forget quickly or never learned of the disaster

  • @Dragonfly6160 Politicians are bought in not elected

  • @Dragonfly6160 Stop with your liberal nonsense... The fact is the world, not just the US relies on Oil... Accidents happen... They elected "drill baby drill" Palin because her message was right... You have no clue how the world works... Oil is the life blood of this country... Solar and wind technology wouldn't put a dent in our needs and it is too expensive!

  • @Dragonfly6160 Ummmm because we need oil? I would rather us get our own oil than buy it from the wnkers in the middle east.

  • @mhunt13104 Fossil fuels are obsolete. The future is renewable energy. The Chinese are spending billions developing a renewable industry and if we don't get with it, the U.S. will be left in the dust again.

  • @Dragonfly6160 Fossil fuels are obsolete? I wish you could tell my car that. I heat and cool my house with it. FYI Something doesn't become obsolete until people stop using it. Nice try though.

  • @mhunt13104 me to

  • @Dragonfly6160 idiot

  • @FXMaster03 If you have an argument against my comments, than post it. Name-calling doesn't mean anything.

  • @Dragonfly6160 you are misinformed Alaska has not pumped at the level it used to for the past 16 years

  • "SOME" oil......?

  • this would not of been so bad if man could get his mind out of the though that bigger is better and, that bigger means saving money.... yet man still has a one though mind and still today makes things bigger.. with bigger mean bigger truble..

  • I cant even begin to imagine how the captain feels.

  • @Liynkx has no concience;he was too drunk.

  • @Liynkx

i am sure he does not care

  • I hope the current spill caused by the explosion and sinking of the oil rig of the coast of the US will not be as bad at this. But my pessimistic side is saying it just might, last figure from the news said that they expect it to top around 4.3 Million gallons..

  • Whet did they do with the tanker after the incident?

  • @Toeboatr its still in use, under a different name and ownership, its been converted into a cargo ship

  • 3:49

  • i was skiing at crystal mountain near greenwater washington

when the exxon valdez went aground ..the next morning filled up the gas tank of truck headed north ..and 72 hrs later was in valdez alaska..30 days later .went out to the beach on smith island with the first clean up crew ..what a fraking mess...made alot of money ..didn't clean up too much oil ....still a mess now 20 yrs later ..dig down on most beaches and you will find oil .

prince william sound will never be the same

    peace out

  • @chena3

    Very strong comment.

  • he even sounds faded in tape lol DRUNK AZZ!!!

  • man, i wish people would find safer and stronger ways to move oil!

  • Good job on this story...As a person in video production for 23 years, I appreciate your in-depth story.

  • i wil never forget this

  • were is the captain during the navigation he was sleep or drunk a liquor

  • He left his third mate in charge while he got drunk. The third mate didn't have a clue of how to navigate the large boat and such ending in him running it aground. I did extensive research on it for a paper. Even nine hours after the accident his blood-alcohol level was still much higher than was acceptable. Absolutely ridiculous.
