The captain's only conviction in the case was for negligently discharging oil. He was fined $50,000 and this summer will begin performing 1,000 hours of community service, picking up litter along Alaska highways. After his trial Captain Hazelwood became a teacher at a maritime academy. Recently, he's been working as a consultant for a law firm in New York.
As it turns out captain Joseph Hazelwood was not even responsible for the accident. He set the right course and left the bridge to his crew like any captain would do. And his idiot crew screwed up and missed the turn that Captain Hazelwood instructed. He was blamed anyway and fired and his life ruined because of lack of competant journalists in this country only looking for the sexy story.
It was an OK film. Some parts seem to be missing or something; a few sections of the film "skip" or seem to have been poorly edited "out". Nonetheless, thumbsup for the positive thinking and positive action in posting this. Peace.
With all the hard work and skill it takes to become a Licensed Merchant Marine Officer (let alone a Master of Steam/Motor Vessels of Any Tonnage) one might ask the conspiracy theory retards on this wall: Why would anyone with that license run a ship aground "on purpose" (phuqueU, I am looking at you) and dance the thin line between jail and freedom? The answer is you're an idiot... or a prepubescent teen with no life. Go outside, get laid... go do SOMETHING with your life.
This was done on purpose too. All the oil spills were deliberate, just like the BP Spill. These corporations don't take any chances with money (oil), unless they have a hidden agenda. Almost all the big corporations are run by Secret Society Filth.
"Some" oil? Exxon SHOULD have been fined so much, that it would bankrupt them;same with B.P. B.P broke Exxon's record. People serve jail time from operating a car while drunk, why not ships?
@HUSKY57887 uhhhh ship operators and owners do go to jail.... what rock have you been hiding under? Pop open the CFR's sometime and read a book like a big boy instead of basing all your knowledge on one internet video.
@HUSKY57887 wow... are you twelve years old or something? That was the poorest constructed rebuttal I have ever seen in my life. Higher authorities than you or me acquitted Hazelwood, and he STILL has his Master's License. Check. Mate.
In the early 20th century, we began to make the transition from using animals for transportation to using machines. Now we have to make the transition from using fossil fuels to using renewable energy. It won't be easy to make the change, but we have the technology to do it and there is no other choice. The Earth can no longer absorb the massive amounts of pollutants from the use of fossil fuels.
Animal transportation IS renewable. I'm not against new technologies for solar, wind etc. but there are circumstances animal transport would be possible and desirable.
Greg Palast stated in 2008 "Forget the drunken skipper fable. As to Captain Joe Hazelwood, he was below decks, sleeping off his bender. At the helm, the third mate would never have collided with Bligh Reef had he looked at his Raycas radar. But the radar was not turned on. In fact, the tanker's radar was left broken and disabled for more than a year before the disaster, and Exxon management knew it. It was [in Exxon's view] just too expensive to fix and operate."[12
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME SUGGESTING SOLUTIONS,,JUST READ ABOUT THIS CRIMINAL>>>Joseph Jeffrey Hazelwood was the captain of the Exxon Valdez during its 1989 oil spill. He was accused of being drunk at the time of the accident, though at trial he was cleared of this charge. Hazelwood was convicted of a misdemeanor charge of negligent discharge of oil, fined $50,000, and sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service. HE HAS VERY GOOD FRIENDS IN THE POLITICIAN FIELD..HE SHOULD GO TO THE ELECTRIC CHAIR
The use of petroleum and other fossil fuels has been obsolete for 35 years. This is not a "Liberal" or a "Conservative" issue. We must make the transition to renewable energy right now in order to save the planet.
That's another thing...there has been no formal investigation of what went wrong to cause this event. Only speculation at this point. While I am against letting foreign prospectors harvest our resources, I don't think they should be convicted before a trial has taken place. This is getting out of hand. There is a due process.
i wonder what percentage of oil transports, rigs, or containers never fail. How much oil is leaked versus what is not? Is it similar to the number of home fires and homes that never catch fire? My point is that we shouldn't abandon things because of what may happen. Instead, we should improve technology and technique in hopes of preventing instances or at least improving the effectivness of how they are handled
"what would become the largest oil spill cleanup in history." ... that is until 20 years later when BP would cause the worst ecological disaster in history.
@tonmagicwon Those Suburbans sure are nice, aren't they. I'm sure if you could afford one, you'd have no problem riding in one. I recommend the Silverado. They're sweeeeet! 315hp at your service.

You probably circle the parking lot looking for the closest available parking space. Oh, and that patio furniture you like so much? Can buy it. They don't make it. Why do people NOT understand this shit?
@Dragonfly6160 Stop with your liberal nonsense... The fact is the world, not just the US relies on Oil... Accidents happen... They elected "drill baby drill" Palin because her message was right... You have no clue how the world works... Oil is the life blood of this country... Solar and wind technology wouldn't put a dent in our needs and it is too expensive!
@mhunt13104 Fossil fuels are obsolete. The future is renewable energy. The Chinese are spending billions developing a renewable industry and if we don't get with it, the U.S. will be left in the dust again.
