I'm such a stupid person. I only JUST realized after listening to a few OST tracks of Gintama did I realize how powerful they sound and how well they fit into different elements to the story. Gintama has some of the best music, both opening/ending themes and background music. Although I think FLCL is number one for their music, Gintama is my number two, and they are both absolutely AMAZING.

@eeeegggg My friend, you don't have to worry about such things. Gintama is licensed by Section 23/Sentai Filmworks with sub-only DVD releases. I agree that it needs more fan support. As for original artist Hideaki Sorachi changing the concept, never gonna happen. He's a cool guy full of artistic integrity so he'll never sell out. :)

Actually Gintoki and Kenshin are equal in some terms. Both were infamous for their skills in the battlefield, both reject their destructive pasts. Kenshin was the Man Slayer, Gintoki was the Silver Samurai. Kenshin's ashamed of his past life, Gintoki lost many of his friends back during the Joi War. Also, THEY'RE BOTH SHONEN JUMP CHARACTERS DAMMIT.

Actually, despite the very different tones, they do highlight the same general period in history (Though in Gintama they give it a fictional twist) and even have some of the same characters. Also, the premise is actually fairly similar, with a dangerous swordsman from the war trying to help out civilian society. (I love both of these anime's, just not in the same way)

That's actually a pretty tough call in my opinion (And I mean that, I own the entire Rurouni Kenshin manga, but Gintama might be my favorite ANIME).

For example, there are characters of the Shinsengumi are present both in Samurai X, as on Gintama. Aoshi Shinomori of Samurai X is inspired by Toshizo Hijikata, as of Gintama Hijikata Toushirou is also inspired by Taoshizou Hijikata. Still others, just browse and read a little. Like Harada Unosuke, Yamazaki Sagaru, Okita Sougo..

@mickXfan I know other people pointed it out already, but Rurouni Kenshin and Gintama are set in similar eras with similar historical figures. Kenshin does take place a bit later than Gintama though, and in Gintama the Westerners were replaced with aliens.

So in case anyone is wondering why there is such similarities in characters, it's because both shows based them on famous figures of a historical period. Haha, if you think about it Gintoki is Kenshin's senpai.
