missionphoto, I like your video, and appreciate what you're doing.
Everyone else. 1st of all, I wouldn't use a nice receiver to test this on. 2nd, householdhacker is just making parody videos. He even says so in at least one of his descriptions. Finally, "hi-def" labeling of sound or radio is like "natural" on groceries. Hi-def is a specific standard for video, and just used to sell stuff for everything else. To get "high definition" sound, become an audiophile.
It is absolutely not busted, because after seeing this video I added the magnet and got extremely clear though very quiet sound out of my paper plate speaker replica. For those who want to try this I say go for it, but fair warning; you may not be successful depending on what sound source you use.
I actually tried the make a speaker for under a buck. It didn't work and I felt stupid for believing it. Then I watched the myth busters video and realized that they were even stupider because they just gave up and called the myth busted.
I must be doing something wrong. I have my permanent magnet taped to the foil directly under my penny. I have some cheap old headphones that did work before I cut the ends off. I wrapped the exposed wires around the penny so that the wires are from end to end on the Abe Lincoln side and halfway across the tails side. I then taped the penny Lincoln side down.
I suspect the headphones, what kind of headphones are you using? Should I risk my old apple headphones?
@WoofterJM if the headphones didn't work the wire could of beenbad not the headphones so explaining why the both don't work. this guy here is right you can made a speaker out off almost anything with magnets
if u realy want to make it then mount a bigger magnet to a plate such that it is very close to the foil but not attached and its magnetic axis should b perpendicular to foil and the part of foil just above the magnet should have an electromagnet attached to it such that its magnetic axis coinside with that of permanet magnet, the two terminals of electro magnet should be connected to 2 wires coming out from the head phone
if u read my previous comment then you must have seen many words in short form. if you really suck in reading short forms then either do not read/ write comments or try understanding them.
(for you to understand i hav not included any short forms in this comment)
The idea works cause you got all the components , but he put the magnet and the penny on the foil, i would assume putting the copper on the plate or something would be better, otherwise where will the vibration come from?
I saw no vibration in this video, so i doubt the authenticity of it.
And i have no idea if a penny can be used as a electro magnet or not.

*DOH* would best fit your reaction when u'll understand what i wanted to say... the guy in the vid says that's a so-called "magnetic wire", not a "normal wire". the point is that a "magnetic wire" is just a isolated copperwire. therefore it's a "normal wire" but just isolated.
there's no real difference in these two "wiretypes" if u could name them this way. the magnetic field properties, when electricity or an external electrical field is applied, are in "both" wires the same.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the only difference will be in the solenoid. if you don't use an isolated wire(just a wire, not a super-duper-magic "magnet wire") the charges loaded onto the circuit will only induce one big charged potential area with a minimum magnetic field. if you use an isolated wire instead you'll get the desired homogeneous magnetic field inside the solenoid and at the edges of it. that's the hole thing.
Overall speakers are not that complex in design, so I can by the fact you can produce sound with those materials he used.
Doesn't mean it will sound as good as mass produced speakers, but that isn't the point. The point is that making a homemade speaker really isn't that difficult.
very informative, not like the other dumbtweet video only their shakey video is showing and when their finish making the speaker you would believe its true coz of the quality of the sounds it makes, until you tested it yourself...lots of asshole out their want to ride the bandwagon
There are a couple possibilities. The copper wire needed is the type that has a very thin coat of lacquer on it. If it's just normal copper wire, it just shorts out the signal source. Also, the distance between the copper and the magnet makes a big difference. The field of a magnet deceases ten fold when the distance is doubled.
you and your video are awesome, god bless education and the power of the human mind. This will all matter and we'll use this someday, when babylon falls...
Simple hands-on experiments like this help people understand some fairly complex scientific concepts that are useful in many areas. Your sarcasm simply shows ignorance.
No, this version of the paper plate speaker will work. It has all the principal parts of a normal speaker and will generate sound. As for it being "high fidelity", that is the part that SO SUCKSSSSS.
You can use a regular magnet, but rare earth or other strong magnets work best. If you can find a big magnet from an old speaker, they work pretty well.
Why it works at all with the wire ends simply twisted together: it acts like a one turn coil electromagnet.
You need to separate the magnet and coil. With them both fastened to the foil, there will be only a little sound due to vibration because the magnet and coil are taped loosely.
Tape the magnet to the center of the paper plate, then tape the coil exactly above it on the foil. Carefully push the foil down so the coil is just above, but not touching the magnet. It will be much louder.
Do not put the wires together. The penny is not that necessary, as I mentioned, you can roll some wire up and that works even better. Watch some of my other videos on speakers. Again, I never claim this is a high-def speaker, I just tried to show how it could work. Thanks for the comments.
BAKA! a hedphone jack Wont work because the wireing at the plugin is made to reduce sound!. i k now i did the same thing trying to splice a aux to headphone jack together and there wasnt enough sound to make paper vibrate!!
you need to use a diffrent cord that was designed for thing kind of thing like pc speakers. after i spliced old seaker wires with the same aux cable and it made it extreamly louder! SO PEOPLE TRY THIS if your not getting the right volume of sound.
@kedonot11 no he didnt be cause household hacker made it for about 3 bucks this guys was made for about 20 bucks and just because this guys is louder does not mean anything ive made a speaker and it works fine and i use HH's instructions so no he didnt get owned or anything.
You can do it with regular copperwiring also. You just have to remove the thin layer that surrounds the wire. A thin layer protecting the wire needs to be burnt or scraped away.(No I am not talking about the plastic). Good video though. Keep it up :)
Hmm if you are going to plan on making more videos about this topic, you should attempt to make a plater-speaker that can actually serve as a real speaker.
mmhmm...ok, i'm gonna need to go get some wire. another question, perhaps he answers this in the other vidoes, but does he put the wires from the jack between the penny and the foil or between the tape and the penny?
No, this is not a joke, it really does work, but not that well. It's a paper plate, you can't expect that much. Check out my challenge that I have for my students. In a few weeks my students are going to create their own speakers and I might share some of them.
You don't really want to connect the electromagnet (EM), there should be some seperation between the EM and permanent magnet. Watch my other videos, I explain more. User Zenodilodon replied and made a pretty good speaker.
You can get them at dealextreme . com .You can also pull them out of old harddrives.Btw, this doesn't work because the speaker he created is shit, and because he needs and amp.The signal from that jack is meant for small headphones not for a huge coil around a nail.
I agree the speaker isn't that great, I wouldn't surround my house with them. The point of the video is to show people that you CAN create a speaker using household items. I never claimed that this speaker is High-Def..I'm just showing my students and the world that it works....thanks for your comments.
you need an permanent magnet on the bottom, rare earth magnets work best. I found out the magnet must be directly under the wires for it to work. Get rid of the penny and take some thin speaker wire and wind it up as much as possible, then put the magnet in the middle and that might work as well. Check out my other video "speaker under a buck challenge part 2" Thanks for watching.
Speakers run on the push pull effect of EM signals going through a series of wound wire coil. To make this even more effiecnt you would want to actually remove the penny and the electrom magnet form the foil, glue or tape the magnet to the foil as shown here but before you put it over the plate mount an electomagnetical coil in the plate so the magnet sits on top, I may to this with plastic wrap to demonstrate this type of set up very nice video btw thanks for letting people know the truth.
Thanks for the input, I am teaching EM waves to my students next week, I will bring that up. I'm not sure if the plastic wrap will be tight enough. I tried it and I could not get it to work. Let me know if you can, I would love to see it work better.
Why are there still people that believe HouseHold hacker's speaker worked? Some even claimed to have tried it and succeeded! Excellent video by the way.
Search youtube for HDD Speaker(tune up) to see an interesting homemade speaker out of an old disk drive and cd case.

wouldn't you be better off putting the magnet on the plate rather than the foil so the electro magnet has something to work against.
