hey...thank you so mch for your video. You are a very smart man, and you have a lot to say. You made me think about a lot of things, and I appreciate you making this video. Keep it up!
I've seen terrible YouTube videos since being on, but I wouldn't want to mention them either because I wouldn't want to publicise them or because I'd rather find a better video. By the way check out the BBC's Video Nation webpage. It has been running for years and used to be five minute shorts between television programmes - now it continues on the Internet and all the old videos are also archived there.
Which makes me think it is less about actually hating the video or the person making it than riding on the coattails of the video, especially if it is by a successful poster -- in a way all comments are like that, such as my long spiels, but a quick insult is perhaps the only thing people can think of to say rather than a reasoned response, even if that response is still to tell the video maker that they disagree with them!
. I get upset at TV programmes sometimes saying they are terrible, but that is mainly directed at the way the schedules force a narrow range of programmes onto the air -- same sometime with films in that formula seems prized over originality. YouTube has such a range of content that it doesn't force anyone to watch -- you don't have to sit and wait for the next video to start -- if you hate it turn it off and move on to the next one!
These people have obviously watched the videos though, and in the case of some youtubers videos I've seen comments from the same person again and again saying they didn't like his vids etc! It seems childish since there is no compelling reason to do or watch anything on YouTube.
About people attacking others for making videos - I don't understand it, or rather I don't like trying to understand it. Since making comments is much easier (and relatively anonymous) than making videos I assume that its not pre-meditated, just an off the cuff "that's crap!" or "I hate you!" remark.
What I'm getting at is that despite the upgrades it is inevitable this new computer will go the way of the old one since there are new developments like the Windows Vista OS and HD-DVD or Blu Ray coming. It's about making the most of what you have available at the time, and knowing the difference between important upgrades and ones you can live without for a while! It's more difficult now that pace of change can be measured in 5 or 10 years rather than 15 or 20.
- so now I've got broadband, a DVD-ROM drive, flat screen, a quiet printer etc, but I used the last PC for eight years and got all the use out of it I could, despite it being impossible to use since the Windows operating system was hopelessly out of date, and it was a pre-USB ports for everything computer!
As long as you don't get frustrated with being behind the trends (and its a good skill to have since it feels like things are getting so no one can keep fully up to date any more in every aspect of their lives), then it makes the upgrading when it does happen sweeter! For example this year I've finally upgraded my PC from the first PC I got in 1998
I think you are right in noticing how the pace of change is speeding up. I think it is partly advances in technology, partly economic in that new things are coming out. We've had it in computers for years. Although I'm one of those people who, as well as not having the money to upgrade all the time(!), likes to leave a big gap between upgrades - it makes the excitement when you do make that transition greater.
You just gained a lifelong friend and fan from this "viddy". You said some of the things that I have been thinking for what feels like forever, and for that, Thank You.
I disagree. I'm getting frustrated with crappy videos that are completely pointless and utterly mindless. But hey, you mentioned Eugene O'Neill so that qualifies as something above the norm.
I particularly appreciate U2bers who just do there own thing and leave it up to me to decide if I want to watch. Those who start out with an agenda to be a "celebrity" are basically doing the same thing as mainstream TV. It is usually pretty apparent after a few videos. I didn't come here to watch TV. Mine get used to watch the latest arrival from Netflix.
Crap is such a harsh word. More like filler for the masses. the greatest thing about youtube and the likes of yourself, paperlilies and geriatic1927 is that it is oral history, something every culture is based on. That and a sense of community. if only we could talk to our neighbours like we voice ourselves on youtube, itcould be a better world.
I haven't really watched any of Boh3m3's videos, but i have enjoyed others speaking directly at me, or watching short films. The honesty or real life, and the creativity can be really fantastic. But people have to do what they want- not what I, you or anyone else wants.
I think you definately have an on screen presence.
But you read way too much into the cycles of shit in different mediums. There is a lot of crap on TV and in the papers- and on YouTube and the rest of the internet. But there is much more of the good stuff in each medium, you just have to search through the shit for it. (An unappealing metaphor, I know.)
Crap is very subjective. One person's crap is anothers great content.
PaperLillies as an example: I don't know where she came up with her latest self criticism. She seemed like she was having so much fun and then all of the sudden this. <cont>
I was having fun watching what she was doing, well except maybe the parts she did with her brother, I prefer the one v one she was doing. It is like she is just sitting down with me and telling me what she did today. It felt like an almost personal conversation, which I know it's not but it certainly feels that way.
I feel like I am getting to know her, even though she has no idea who I am.Same for Boh3m3 I really enjoyed his stuff before he started to feel pressured to do something "great". Just be yourselves.
Man, you read my mind. I was just remarking on the same trends with youtube celebrities last night. I think it will be interesting to see it sort it out.
Incidentally, have you studied philosophy, or are you really just a reasonable man?
That is exactly the answer I hoped for, I can safely say the same thing about myself. Whether all this learning has payed off for me remains to be seen.
Narcissism? How could we possibly be narcissists? We sit alone in a room and talk to ourselves about...ourselves. And then we watch the videos of ourselves talk about... ourselves. Sometimes more than once.
Narcissistic? Bah! They don't know the meaning of the word! ;)
I think if I were to read a book in front of the camera I would have to multi-task a 100 other things for it to be interesting lol and that doesn't bother me. I have yet to see someone post a vlog saying (and seriously mean it) "I love me. I am better than everyone else. You know you all want me." Maybe I'm missing something. But, Paris Hilton and narcissistic used in the same sentence by Urgelt above is the most accurate use of the term I have heard on here lately.
great video and very well said Mr.Ponderous. thanks your taking the time out of your big mistake time to make this video cause i wanted to hear your opinion on the subject. i agree with your statements and couldnt have made the point better. thank you
Very thought provoking...And also very true...I hope that everyone watches your vid so that they can truly understand this whole YouTube phenomenon. The courage it takes for someone to post a video (no matter what the content) is in and of itself highly commendable. VLOGS, BLOGS, VCLOGS, or whatever you want to call them are a medium that can bring people from all over the world closer together and can show us that we all really are the same...no matter where we live...or what our background.
Dick, you come back and it's like finding a lost compass.
Sometimes people forget why they started making videos blogs in the first place and they fall into the trap of pandering to the crowd. Instead of making videos that they want, they try to do what they thing other people want. In the end people just need to realize that only you are in control of who you are and how you present yourself. No one should make you feel like you're wrong for presenting yourself in the way you see fit.
Very interesting points about "YouTube society" evolution as a medium. Maybe it moves faster through the change cycle because it moves literally at the speed of thought.
Great post DP! Thanks for explaining. I appreciate your output. I'd insult you now, but I don't want you to be put out. Exchange is important, so is input. even in Russia, and especially from Putin. ;)Peace!
PL and Bo3m3 aren't worried about what viewers want so much as they are worried that what they do is without meaning to *them.* They're asking themselves how they want to use this medium. I'm betting they both come up with better answers - for themselves - than what they've thus far been doing.
I dont expect anyone to stay stagnant in anything they do. I just dont believe calling vlogging narcasistic is a correct use of the word. I in no way meant to imply bad things would come from either of my examples.
Your videos are always observant and impressive. TV is almost always crap and we really should try to keep YouTube seperate than the bad media around us.
hey...thank you so mch for your video. You are a very smart man, and you have a lot to say. You made me think about a lot of things, and I appreciate you making this video. Keep it up!
