  • non ! pas à l'Opera de paris ! ! A l'Opera comique

  • I adore the use of castanets in this!!! GENIUS!!!!

  • She's mesmerizing and spell-binding. I love her acting, dancing, singing and her everything. Such an exciting performance. Brava.

  • @tonyhan0903 with you on this. What's not to like?

  • She's doing wonderful Carmen. My heart was pumping up so fast near the end of aria when she was dancing and doing the trill at the same time. Her dark voice sounds so beautiful at the middle and the low. Pleasant resonance and exquisite trill. I love this whole production. I wish I could be there.

  • Yes, I totally agree, I love Teresa Berganza, though I think in Carmen's role Julia Migenes Johnson is really really perfect...

  • If only Julia was a bit hotter!

  • I think Julia was very hot, in an earthy, gypsy like way. She was natural and animalistic, not a diva doing sexy gestures.

  • E' entusiasmante!!!!

  • Estupenda y con mucha pasion!

  • I agree this is a very beauifully staged scene. I'd like to see more of this production

  • you can see! I´ve put all scenes where Teresa is :) ...and also Jose´s aria...

btw, thank you for all nice comments!!! j.

  • Ok...I'll go take a look ...thanks for letting me know....

  • Great voice ! Sometimes not in time ,but lovely voice !

  • ...and the whole scene is very beautyfully staged

  • best voice for a "carmen" in my opinion. Crystalline

  • Hey she can boogie too!

  • She might not be the best mezzo ever, but her voice is pure, perfectly managed and controlled up and down the octaves. Yet everything sung by her sounds "easy", effortless, fluent.

Her timbre is not the darkest available nor is her voice the most beautiful ever heard but her technique and gusto are outstanding: she reminds me of a mountain brook: not as impressive as Niagara falls but soothing, perfect, spotlessly beautiful.

Here, as Carmen, gone is the vamp and there is the authentic woman

  • Prospero Mérimé, Carmen, Espanha, olé...

  • Even though she is stationary here, Berganza proves to be quite the little flamenco dancer. I wonder if she's trained in flamenco and if she danced in her other productions??

  • Well she is Spanish. If it would come naturally to anyone it would be her.

  • Brava!

  • Take a look at Maria Ewing singing and acting the Carmen character especially with the Gypsy song and Habanera. The London Philharmonic Orchestra is in the background. Both are posted.

    Gypsies are learning from her!

  • True, Ewing is pretty good, perfect attitude to approach Carmen with. No I'm not saying I could do better(because I couldn't) but I still prefer Antonacci(apologies for mispelling her middle name(Caterina) in my previous post).

  • It absolutely amazes me how one can sing like that. An I thought Paul Potts was good! The other item I notice is that if you look at most opera singers performing one can see they are "trying." Of course everyone does. However, with Ewing, it appears she is not trying but it just comes naturally.

If I was fortunate enough to be able to afford to see some operetta sing I would certainly choose Ewing doing Carmen not for the plot which really doesn't interest me, but just to hear her sing.

  • In my opinion Berganza sang this part very well, however I don't believe she acted Carmen. Berganza is stationary for the majority of this performance which kind of took some of that old gypsy magic out of it for me. I think Anna Carolina Antonacci was spectacular as Carmen aspecially Les triangles

  • Please, where did you find this video? Is this production available on video or DVD? I would love to see it!

  • I have original DVD recording. My friend buyed me it somewhere here in Slovakia or in Vienna... I´m not sure... but the true is, I didn´t see in internet stores so far :(

  • Thank you. I tried looking on the internet too and couldn't find it.

  • Can I ask you what label your DVD recording is? And thank you very much for posting these clips.

Bravo Teresa!!!!!

  • Very elegantly sung.

  • lalalalalalaaaa! Perfect in my opinion too!
