Billy Sunday was very famous. First as a baseball player and then as an evangelist, he was well known as both. He was in the news all the time back then and it would not be uncommon for him to be seen in the theaters. That is where people went to see the news back then.
Just as ignorant and stupid then as they are now. Religion has been a plague spot on civilization that has stood in the way of freedom, the advancement of science and is the root cause of most of the trouble and war in this world. Millions upon millions of people have killed each other over religious differences and the dogmatic teachings religion has imposed upon us
@whizzles1 You are correct regarding religion but Billy Sunday had nothing to do with religion. Religion is an abomination to God. This man was a blood-bought child of God. He had received the gift of God's salvation purchased by the blood of Jesus and He was speaking the truth of God and not some religious garbage. May our God pull you out of the miry clay that is keeping you under and bring you out of religion to Himself.

I wasn't referring to all Christians. Just the ones who were pro slavery. The same churches whose members were officially against miscegenation as late as the mid 1960s.

0:21 Capitalist nonsense. Matthew 19:24, God most certainly DOES have a problem with wealth, and that's hardly the only verse. Whether Catholic or Protestant, too many churches in America are filled with Escalade-driving country club members who vote for tea bagger politicians who promise to lower the minimum wage and keep health care expensive. It's funny how he drops names like JP Morgan and Andrew Carnegie. Back then, it probably meant something. Now, you hear names like that and you either think of the JP Morgan corporation or of Carnegie-Melon University ... like these are old names from the history books.

@mammal46 I know....The way some people talk about him this man was one of the greatest evangelists of the lats 100 years.
This is not Paul, this is not George Whitefield, this is not John Wesley, this is not Evan Roberts, this is not John Sung this guy seems very typical of most American evangelists of the day with perhaps more zeal.
@Icannottolerateit I happen 2 love Leonard Ravenhill, Dave Wilkerson, John MacArthur, Chuck Missler & Spurgeon. I don't know who U R talking about except 4 of course Apostle Paul & John Wesley. I'm afraid I've never heard of the other names. But you are 100% right this guy sounds just like the evangelistic preachers of today, & I can care less 4 him.
I can't C the Apostle Paul, nor James, John, or Peter using theatrics in their preaching & I don't want to C it in others either. GOD bless.
@mammal46 Leonard Ravenhill almost completely ignored charity in favor of just sitting around praying all the time. John MacArthur is a cessationist because he has never tasted the deep things of Christ. David Wilkerson lost his touch when he started his church and made it all mechanical and predictable and mammon infused.
My dear brother please look up Evan Roberts and the Welsh Revival. You will learn more about Church and how it should operate from it than any of those men you speak of.
@Icannottolerateit Well Mr. Thinks he's perfect, I don't have anything further to say or to hear from you. So keep the rest of your opinions to yourself, or at least don't share them with me.
It figures you're just 23 years old. That's why you think you know everything there is to be known. You'll just have to learn the hard way like most disrespectful youngens like yourself. You can't tollerate it. You're too young to know what life has that Must be tollerated. But you'll learn, you'll learn...lol...
@mammal46 I mean I cannot tolerate the fact that there are no genuine men standing as watchmen between God and man.
John the apostle was much younger than 23 when he became a disciple. Samuel was a boy when he was a prophet. Timothy was more than likely younger than myself. Age is irrelevant to spiritual maturity, and I am not claiming to be a pastor or prophet like the laymen touching the ark I mentioned. I am smart enough NOT to touch the ark as a layman.
@mammal46 I do not think I am perfect, but my understanding is mature enough to know what a preacher is and what it is not.
Evan Roberts was a true evangelist. John Sung was a true evangelist. George Whitefield was a true evangelist. These men shed tears and wept publicly and often when they preached. They also knew prayer was more important than preaching when the Church assembles. In Acts the Church gathered to pray, not hear sermons all day long.
@mammal46 So I will ask you. Show me when Ravenhill talks about charity to any degree comparable to prayer. Most of his books are about praying, which is great, but our prayers are almost worthless without a a total surrender to God which includes our possessions.
Show me Chuck Missler cause a sinner a single tear. Show me John MacArthur doing the same.
These men have words, but not the power. The power to convict, the power to overcome sin and to pull down Satanic strongholds.
@mammal46 Chuck Missler sits around trying to solve the Bible like a puzzle and Spurgeon had many many positives, and I have no reason to point out anything he did wrong.
I own almost every Leonard Ravenhill book, many books by Spurgeon and have listened to MacArthur Missler and Wilkerson but all are disappointing......All miss so many important things we are supposed to do in order to actually be like the apostles. And make no mistake we CAN be just like them!
Billy Sunday was a man of God in the good old days, when America was God's nation.Today most preachers in this apostate doomed America are kissy-poo heretics who are bound for Hell along with their followers.Only preachers like Fred Phelps,Preacher717,Rueben Israel are those who preach the truth in this evil America.Fred Phelps is a hero!
@RobotShoppingCenter Yup the good old days when America was God's nation - where discrimination ran rampant - women couldn't vote - they lynched blacks thought evolution was a myth and god fearing republicans led this nation into a deep depression. if that is the kind of america you want punkin - may i suggest iran would be more to your liking - say the word and a one way ticket is yours - kisses.
@thegayprovocateur So you would rather have a God hating, baby murdering, feminist controlled America of today. God forbid. Wish we could go back to these times when people loved God, country and the rights of babies to be born rather than aborted because women cannot keep their legs together.
@MrFBCBSALES just a country that would respect and recognize the civil rights of ALL its citizens. we still don't have it in america - and if last week's elections is any indication - we never will.
@thegayprovocateur I on the other hand praise god for last weeks election. The crew in power was destroying America. Might interest you to know that I am gay but I realize that is not a life style God approves of. I do know that He loves me and I know that He loves you also. No offense intended to you.
@MrFBCBSALES love begins with you punkin' if you don't love yourself for the beautiful creation you are - in the image of love - blessed by love - then you will be lost forever to the darkness where hate flourishes and love does not exist. as for the elections - the parties can be defined in two ways GOP/teaparty stand for profit - greed and self-enrichment - while the Democrats - for the care of others - on whose side would your christ stand?
@thegayprovocateur Only reply for tonight is that if you believe that the Democratic party stands for caring for others then you need to look more closely. Obama is just a total abomination.
@MrFBCBSALES for trying to help those who need it most - hardly an abomination - but surely a disappointment. as a socialist i never expected him to be very far left of the corporate whores and interest groups that run washington - but i thought he'd carry a sledgehammer into every meeting with the republicans like old style chicago politics and bust a few heads. he didn't and now he paid the price for it. pity that :-(
It is. The condition of this footage is actually very poor. Many movies filmed in the 1890's-1930's have crystal clear quality. It all depends on the brand used and how it was stored over the years. e.g. Metropolis from 1927 and the Jazz Singer are good examples.
@Aaron1912 - Yes I was aware that some types of film back then was prone to deterioration. It's a great piece of footage and I can see how Sunday would have been popular in his day even if I do think his message is nonsense.
Pray the blinder of our faith be bound and the captive set free to be able to "see, hear and know" the gospel of Jesus Christ. Religion doesn't save anyone, a PERSON does and His Name is Jesus Christ!!
what exactly do you mean by that? I think that non-Christian video far out numbers and out-weighs Christian videos don't you? If people have the right to curse God on the airwaves and the internet and use his name in vain and tell their filthy jokes and show their porn then God-fearing people have a right to praise God on the airwaves and internet. enough said.
@DawnieQuel you got me all wrong....I'm a christian.....I was saying no-one on here has anything better to do than post hateful comments on christian videos.
If anyone's watched the "Jeeves and Wooster" TV series (with Fry & Laurie), the character of "Jimmy Mundy" (in the NYC episodes) is obviously based on this person.
A hundred years from now, when people want to discuss moral decadence as the downfall of America, they'll be playing videos of smirking Pat Robertson, dealing in blood diamonds and responding to the catastrophe of Haiti, not by urging people to help, but by blaming its children for their own terrible suffering.
Just remember folks: billionaires are holy. And rich people always know what's best.
Ah, the rantings of the religiously insane. They haven't changed a bit - The Rushdoony's, the Dominionists, the Taliban, the Talibornagain's and the Rapture Ready. All crazy.
Time for religion to be relegated to the status of a hobby - an eccentric but not particularly wholesome hobby, but a hobby nonetheless.
It amazes me how much Billy Sunday is like todays modern televangelists. Some things never change I guess. As others have pointed out I find in interesting that he was lionizing the wealthy right on the eve of the Great Depression while preaching against "evil" things like whiskey. LOL. The gullible fall for it every time.
Odd that he is preaching how great it is to be rich on the eve of the big crash. Funny that Christ said you can't serve God and money, but evangelists always want you to believe that you can. Evangelical=worse religion ever.
I believe it states the love of money, not having money is a sin. There are and have been many with the means to help those who had none. Isn't that what christian charity is all about?
You can't serve both but you can have both. You can use your talents and wealth to serve Him and that is not a sin. If you put your wealth before Him then that is wrong.
I heard him preaching about how sinful the society of time was in that message. I find it kind of prophetic that a month later the crash happened and so did a lot of people's morals. I just detest others casting stones when they should be looking at their own lives. Don't pass judgement on others you know nothing about.
@pax41 I was not passing judgement on this man, especially considering the fact that I know very little about him. I gave an opinion- based on what he said here it seemed to me that he was saying it's good to be rich (i.e. it's a sin to be poor). Evangelism does preach that message at times, which I personally do not agree with. It's true that you can have money and still serve God, but the bible also states that it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle....
Jesus used that analogy when speaking about the rich young ruler. I don't think he meant it applied to all the wealthy but to some. I was not picking on you alone but this statement drew my attention" Evangelical=worse religion ever". As for Billy Sunday, he was a former professional ball player who turned evangelist. I think that may account for some of his animated sermon. He was held in High Regard at the time by many, kind of like Billy Graham a few decades later.
@pax41 Jesus may have used that analogy when speaking to the rich young ruler, but the analogy was not meant for the ruler alone, and it is pretty hard hitting- to state that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle suggests that very few of the rich and elite are able to put God before money, for certain it isn't an easy task. I am not sure if you meant to "pick on" me alone, but you did address my comment specifically, as opposed to addressing to any other comment on here.
@pax41 (Cont.) which as I said were harsher than mine. I did refer to Evangelism as the worst religion ever, but that is only my opinion, and if someone else likes it, that is fine by me. I never personally called this man anything bad, only disagreed with his sermon.
I find it hard to make an opinion on his sermon based on 1 minute fragment. People can take parts of what someone said an twist the meaning. I actually did comment on one others comment too.
I personally don't care for that type of preaching but it does seem to reach certain types. It must have been very popular in days gone by. I have read that most of the early evangelists used this style of preaching. Just as times change, sometimes the presentation has to change too.
@pax41 No, you cannot have a full opinion on his entire beliefs or style with only a one minue segment, but the opinion I gave was directed at one comment he made, not his entire style. I respect how you feel. I didn't agree with his comment, and based on that, as well as many, many personal experiences and years of studying theology I made a remark that I didn't like the evangelical religion. You're free to disagree, and to say so, but accusing me of casting stones-
I respect your opinion and we can agree to disagree. I meant for the casting stones statement to apply to most of the others. Your comments were less pointed than some of the others.
@pax41 Thank you. Since you made that statement in response to my comment I did feel that it was directed toward me, but if you meant it in general I apologize.
(Cont.) when all I gave was an opinion, and then telling me to look at my own life when you know nothing about me was a bit harsh and rude to me. Just as I do not know Mr. Sunday you do not know me, yet you didn't mind suggesting I was somehow amoral. I don't know if you commented to anyone else, as of yesterday I saw no comment from you expect what you wrote to me. I could have flew off the handle and replied rudely to you, but I didn't. What you said was personally hurtful, what I said was an-
(Cont.) an opinion on a religious sect, it wasn't meant as a statement on how good or bad Billy Sunday is personally. Again, I could have been very angry, but respected how you felt, even if those feelings were placing me in some sort of evil light. Please respect my feelings now. Let us agree to disagree and end the conversation, as I am certain Aaron didn't post this clip to incite religious debate, but only to show a piece of history. Thank you.
@pax41 (Cont.) than for a rich man to get to heaven, and that says a lot to me, but of course everyone is free to believe as they like. There were comments posted here that were a lot more harsh to this man than mine (i.e. he's drunk, he's brain-washing etc.) so why you decided to go after my comment baffles, but again, to each their own.
What a message... confuse and confound the people... Breed fear, with a moral whip and turn the golden chains of love into self loathing... All for personal gain and political power... Still being done...
@sinterics Hello I have come to understand those that are opposed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, by the way is a person not a religion, prove the Bible to be true, because the enemy of man has the whole world in his hands and has blinded their minds, I have been there too, thankfully someone prayed for me to "see and understand". I can say in truth I have stood in the presence of God and He is absolutely loving, gentle and humble. He told me to tell you He loves you too.
A warning to us all. They're much more subtle these days, but brain-washers are still around. Even if they don't wave their arms around like naval signallers.
The record at the start was fun - good enough to break out a bottle of bootleg gin.

This is not Paul, this is not George Whitefield, this is not John Wesley, this is not Evan Roberts, this is not John Sung this guy seems very typical of most American evangelists of the day with perhaps more zeal.
Icannottolerateit 1 year ago
@Icannottolerateit I happen 2 love Leonard Ravenhill, Dave Wilkerson, John MacArthur, Chuck Missler & Spurgeon. I don't know who U R talking about except 4 of course Apostle Paul & John Wesley. I'm afraid I've never heard of the other names. But you are 100% right this guy sounds just like the evangelistic preachers of today, & I can care less 4 him.
I can't C the Apostle Paul, nor James, John, or Peter using theatrics in their preaching & I don't want to C it in others either. GOD bless.
mammal46 1 year ago
@mammal46 Leonard Ravenhill almost completely ignored charity in favor of just sitting around praying all the time. John MacArthur is a cessationist because he has never tasted the deep things of Christ. David Wilkerson lost his touch when he started his church and made it all mechanical and predictable and mammon infused.
My dear brother please look up Evan Roberts and the Welsh Revival. You will learn more about Church and how it should operate from it than any of those men you speak of.
Icannottolerateit 1 year ago
@Icannottolerateit Well Mr. Thinks he's perfect, I don't have anything further to say or to hear from you. So keep the rest of your opinions to yourself, or at least don't share them with me.
mammal46 1 year ago
It figures you're just 23 years old. That's why you think you know everything there is to be known. You'll just have to learn the hard way like most disrespectful youngens like yourself. You can't tollerate it. You're too young to know what life has that Must be tollerated. But you'll learn, you'll learn...lol...
mammal46 1 year ago
@mammal46 I mean I cannot tolerate the fact that there are no genuine men standing as watchmen between God and man.
John the apostle was much younger than 23 when he became a disciple. Samuel was a boy when he was a prophet. Timothy was more than likely younger than myself. Age is irrelevant to spiritual maturity, and I am not claiming to be a pastor or prophet like the laymen touching the ark I mentioned. I am smart enough NOT to touch the ark as a layman.
Icannottolerateit 1 year ago
@mammal46 I do not think I am perfect, but my understanding is mature enough to know what a preacher is and what it is not.
Evan Roberts was a true evangelist. John Sung was a true evangelist. George Whitefield was a true evangelist. These men shed tears and wept publicly and often when they preached. They also knew prayer was more important than preaching when the Church assembles. In Acts the Church gathered to pray, not hear sermons all day long.
Icannottolerateit 1 year ago
@mammal46 So I will ask you. Show me when Ravenhill talks about charity to any degree comparable to prayer. Most of his books are about praying, which is great, but our prayers are almost worthless without a a total surrender to God which includes our possessions.
Show me Chuck Missler cause a sinner a single tear. Show me John MacArthur doing the same.
These men have words, but not the power. The power to convict, the power to overcome sin and to pull down Satanic strongholds.

Hogan10298 11 months ago

@thegayprovocateur I on the other hand praise god for last weeks election. The crew in power was destroying America. Might interest you to know that I am gay but I realize that is not a life style God approves of. I do know that He loves me and I know that He loves you also. No offense intended to you.
MrFBCBSALES 1 year ago
@MrFBCBSALES love begins with you punkin' if you don't love yourself for the beautiful creation you are - in the image of love - blessed by love - then you will be lost forever to the darkness where hate flourishes and love does not exist. as for the elections - the parties can be defined in two ways GOP/teaparty stand for profit - greed and self-enrichment - while the Democrats - for the care of others - on whose side would your christ stand?
thegayprovocateur 1 year ago
@thegayprovocateur Only reply for tonight is that if you believe that the Democratic party stands for caring for others then you need to look more closely. Obama is just a total abomination.
MrFBCBSALES 1 year ago
@MrFBCBSALES for trying to help those who need it most - hardly an abomination - but surely a disappointment. as a socialist i never expected him to be very far left of the corporate whores and interest groups that run washington - but i thought he'd carry a sledgehammer into every meeting with the republicans like old style chicago politics and bust a few heads. he didn't and now he paid the price for it. pity that :-(

You sure this is 1929, the footage and clarity of the audio seem remarkable for something of that vintage
Resenbrink 1 year ago

"Morals rest on religion..."
Well, there's one huge misconception right there.

Serenadesong 2 years ago
@Serenadesong
I believe it states the love of money, not having money is a sin. There are and have been many with the means to help those who had none. Isn't that what christian charity is all about?
You can't serve both but you can have both. You can use your talents and wealth to serve Him and that is not a sin. If you put your wealth before Him then that is wrong.
pax41 1 year ago
@Serenadesong
I heard him preaching about how sinful the society of time was in that message. I find it kind of prophetic that a month later the crash happened and so did a lot of people's morals. I just detest others casting stones when they should be looking at their own lives. Don't pass judgement on others you know nothing about.
pax41 1 year ago
@pax41 I was not passing judgement on this man, especially considering the fact that I know very little about him. I gave an opinion- based on what he said here it seemed to me that he was saying it's good to be rich (i.e. it's a sin to be poor). Evangelism does preach that message at times, which I personally do not agree with. It's true that you can have money and still serve God, but the bible also states that it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle....
Serenadesong 1 year ago
@Serenadesong
He was held in High Regard at the time by many, kind of like Billy Graham a few decades later.
pax41 1 year ago
@pax41 Jesus may have used that analogy when speaking to the rich young ruler, but the analogy was not meant for the ruler alone, and it is pretty hard hitting- to state that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle suggests that very few of the rich and elite are able to put God before money, for certain it isn't an easy task. I am not sure if you meant to "pick on" me alone, but you did address my comment specifically, as opposed to addressing to any other comment on here.
Serenadesong 1 year ago
@pax41 (Cont.) which as I said were harsher than mine. I did refer to Evangelism as the worst religion ever, but that is only my opinion, and if someone else likes it, that is fine by me. I never personally called this man anything bad, only disagreed with his sermon.
Serenadesong 1 year ago
@Serenadesong
Just as times change, sometimes the presentation has to change too.
pax41 1 year ago
@pax41 No, you cannot have a full opinion on his entire beliefs or style with only a one minue segment, but the opinion I gave was directed at one comment he made, not his entire style. I respect how you feel. I didn't agree with his comment, and based on that, as well as many, many personal experiences and years of studying theology I made a remark that I didn't like the evangelical religion. You're free to disagree, and to say so, but accusing me of casting stones-
Serenadesong 1 year ago
@Serenadesong

Serenadesong 1 year ago
(Cont.) when all I gave was an opinion, and then telling me to look at my own life when you know nothing about me was a bit harsh and rude to me. Just as I do not know Mr. Sunday you do not know me, yet you didn't mind suggesting I was somehow amoral. I don't know if you commented to anyone else, as of yesterday I saw no comment from you expect what you wrote to me. I could have flew off the handle and replied rudely to you, but I didn't. What you said was personally hurtful, what I said was an-
Serenadesong 1 year ago
(Cont.) an opinion on a religious sect, it wasn't meant as a statement on how good or bad Billy Sunday is personally. Again, I could have been very angry, but respected how you felt, even if those feelings were placing me in some sort of evil light. Please respect my feelings now. Let us agree to disagree and end the conversation, as I am certain Aaron didn't post this clip to incite religious debate, but only to show a piece of history. Thank you.
Serenadesong 1 year ago
@pax41 (Cont.) than for a rich man to get to heaven, and that says a lot to me, but of course everyone is free to believe as they like. There were comments posted here that were a lot more harsh to this man than mine (i.e. he's drunk, he's brain-washing etc.) so why you decided to go after my comment baffles, but again, to each their own.
