What a very interesting reaction. And is all of this equipment a private collection? If so, I would love to have such equipment once I earn my chemE degree. Thanks again for these videos.
every reaction is exothermic or endothermic, and endothermic ones are rare in simple chemical reactions. one i can think off on the back of my head is ammonium nitrate and barium hydroxide.
stop telling him how to be safe!!!!! The vid is about the reaction of Bromine and Aluminum, not who is safe with chemistry!. I think he knows what he's doing!
yes very toxic. these types of reactions produce mustard gas and when chlorine is used with the aluminum it makes chlorine gas, which is a weapon used in chemical warfare. very dangerous to breathe.
bulletman100, none of these reactions produce mustard gas....
Mustard gas is 1,5 dichloro- 3 -thiapentane -
No reaction between a metal and non metal (i.e. bromine and aluminum, or bromine and chlorine) will provide the sulfur, or the 5 carbon backbone.... the gases are toxic, but they are not mustard....
hey, sorry to bother you again, but i am having trouble producing elemental bromine. i have tried running chlorine gas through a solution of sodium bromide. All that is happening for me is the solution turning a red color and some bromine fumes coming out of the glass flask. no dark, heavy liquid bromine forms at all. do you have any idea as to what i am doing wrong?
Bromine is quite soluble in water. Approx 4 grams of bromine per 100mL of water. Therefore, if you use chlorine to produce bromine, you will have to make a very concentrated solution of NaBr in water and pass loads of chlorine through. Bromien should drop out. Another method is using 1:5 bromate/bromide + acid. I use that to produce my bromine. I just recieved 500gram new potassium bromaten.
CARE! Bromine is highly toxic by inhalation. It is absorbed by the skin and cant be washed off. Burns!
did you get all of that bromine just from condensing it with a retort, or did you use a different way of making it? if you used a different way, how did you do it?
Silly aluminum! Valence electrons are for halogens!

Good example, but this needs to be very well ventilated. Breathing bromine is not advisable.

Bromine vapor is produced because the reaction is strongly exothermic and bromine is boiling, right?
Chmielok 1 year ago
@Chmielok Yes, bromine is boiling and then going up and condensing and running back down.

no I didnt make this from a retort.
I made it by bubbling chlorine gas through a sodium bromide solution.
