  • Silly aluminum! Valence electrons are for halogens!

  • for the 1st 10 seconds i was like "oh cool it does NOTHING!"

  • trolololol love it when that happens :D

  • OMG cool i didnt knew this

  • nice bong! lol jk

  • america.

WE MAKE WEPONS OUT OF WEIRD SHIT

  • where do youget elemental bromine lol

  • what happens if you smell that stuff...i dont mean just inhale it, but if you just so happen to smell it?

  • So now you can put benzene in there and produce brombenzene?

  • Am I the only one wondering where this guy got chlorine from?

  • i found my bong thanks

  • i'll give 60 g's if u make me 20 grams of anthrax

  • I'm just like, "Oh.... Well that's exciting....." and wait like another minute before it actually does something... lol

  • What would happen if you try Magesium instead of Aluminium?

  • wow thats crazy

  • mmm cool - next time sand off some of the the oxidized layer of the aluminium so it reacts more readily

  • @vman123abc -aluminum* - my bad

  • oh shit! fireworks!

  • Good example, but this needs to be very well ventilated. Breathing bromine is not advisable.

  • so that's how they make smoke bombs....hahaha.....deep inhale! that will give you a buzz that will make you sleep.

  • Bromine vapor is produced because the reaction is strongly exothermic and bromine is boiling, right?

  • @Chmielok Yes, bromine is boiling and then going up and condensing and running back down.

  • do this outside

  • that orange gas looks good for your lungs :)

  • bromine is cool.

  • looks like blood

  • 1:04 hey nothing's happening-- *boom*

  • oh my god that is so awesome!

    lol

    i'm studying bromine right now.,

    l0l

    this was cool

  • oh man that fart at the end smells rank!

  • What a very interesting reaction. And is all of this equipment a private collection? If so, I would love to have such equipment once I earn my chemE degree. Thanks again for these videos.

  • he wasted to much bromine :-(

  • Whoo!! It's an exothermic reaction.

    2Al + 3Br2 ===> 2AlBr3 + energy

  • every reaction is exothermic or endothermic, and endothermic ones are rare in simple chemical reactions. one i can think off on the back of my head is ammonium nitrate and barium hydroxide.

  • You should have done this outside!

  • Ever heard of fumehoods?

  • bob sucks on a stick of lard

  • stop telling him how to be safe!!!!! The vid is about the reaction of Bromine and Aluminum, not who is safe with chemistry!. I think he knows what he's doing!

  • better than a blender

  • woooo thats awsome:D:D:D!!

  • nice smoke

  • Fumehood?

  • wouldnt bromine put a hole through your hand if it touched your skin..?

  • I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure H-Br would.

  • AlBr3

  • I dont want to sound stupid but arent those fumes toxic?

  • ya.

  • yes very toxic. these types of reactions produce mustard gas and when chlorine is used with the aluminum it makes chlorine gas, which is a weapon used in chemical warfare. very dangerous to breathe.

  • bulletman100, none of these reactions produce mustard gas....

Mustard gas is 1,5 dichloro- 3 -thiapentane -

No reaction between a metal and non metal (i.e. bromine and aluminum, or bromine and chlorine) will provide the sulfur, or the 5 carbon backbone.... the gases are toxic, but they are not mustard....

  • excuse me, it should say aluminum and chlorine, not bromine and chlorine...

  • @crazzydude14 its ok to sound stupid :)

  • @proskillz89 wow reply to a old comment

  • @crazzydude14 that's true. how about that?

  • @proskillz89 stfu kthanxbai ^_^

  • I like your long test tube.

  • thats what she said

  • what is happening in this reaction? what is being formed?

  • the aluminum reacts with the bromine giving off white and red fumes of bromine and aluminum bromide.

  • @Basco36 What would happen if you mixed aluminum powder and bromine?

  • @Southern661 Things would happen. Bad things. Things that we don't want to happen.

  • aluminum bromide

  • hey, sorry to bother you again, but i am having trouble producing elemental bromine. i have tried running chlorine gas through a solution of sodium bromide. All that is happening for me is the solution turning a red color and some bromine fumes coming out of the glass flask. no dark, heavy liquid bromine forms at all. do you have any idea as to what i am doing wrong?

  • Bromine is quite soluble in water. Approx 4 grams of bromine per 100mL of water. Therefore, if you use chlorine to produce bromine, you will have to make a very concentrated solution of NaBr in water and pass loads of chlorine through. Bromien should drop out. Another method is using 1:5 bromate/bromide + acid. I use that to produce my bromine. I just recieved 500gram new potassium bromaten.

CARE! Bromine is highly toxic by inhalation. It is absorbed by the skin and cant be washed off. Burns!

  • Thanks! you make great videos!

  • no I didnt make this from a retort.

I made it by bubbling chlorine gas through a sodium bromide solution.

  • @Basco36 2 NaBr + Cl2 → Br2 + 2 NaCl

  • did you get all of that bromine just from condensing it with a retort, or did you use a different way of making it? if you used a different way, how did you do it?
