Evangelicalism has lead me to existential theology, and subsequently I have found home in liberation theology (without the Marxism, seeing as I'm a market anarchist...), but also the continual studies of scholars have lead me to reject Evangelical's ridiculous doctrines of inerrancy, and I have come to terms with the notion that Jesus was wrong about the end times, and I follow his message to liberate those suffering spiritually, economically, or otherwise.
Something of an Orwellian Christianity, huh? The world outside looked from the Church to itself, and from itself to the Church; but already it was impossible to say which was which.
Evangelism is a failed tradition.Christian missionaries were recruited with an absurd inspiration from certain"gospel" exhortations,to convert "atheists, agnostics, pagans, heathens, infidels,..." (all of hem even if following even more ancient faiths). "Churchitarians" thus caused religious violence. At the end of it all, what we have today is a highly anarchic population ofChristians in the West, who have been already spiritually raped, who have no sense of God.SURE, XIANITY CANT SAVE ANYONE.
3. There are "socially downtrodden" castes who make up some 25% of total Indian population. They are actually communities, as in every country, which are yet to be educated that ONLY self discipline, sacrifice& conformance to mainstream culture can uplift them, morally, spiritually and economically. Religious conversion never can uplift whole communities, but individuals succeed thru self effort. India has made strong laws banning communal (caste) discrimination, before US banned racialism.
bmkaruppan! Communalism is bad if communities do not want to work for some common goals besides the goals of respective communities. Indian politicians , to my mind, seem more selfish than average Western politician, and they forget country's harmony and progress, and play up one community against another for divide and rule, and votes. The Evangelicals try to take ill-advantage of communal divisions, and steadily convert the poorest communities neglected by government. But no uplift!!
2. E's have infiltrated governments as ministers, to help misuse laws on religious freedom to enable speedy evangelicalism and conersion work aimed at duping poor people. Poverty is not as wide as understood by immature Western media. But human beings in general are greedy and want to get-rich-quick for which E's perform fraud miracles of "Jesus' grace" and mass conversions happen, though rare. BUT EVIL EVANGELICALISM HAS BEGOTTEN HUGE RESISTANCE OF THE DEEPLY RELIGIOUS AND GOD FEARING HINDUS
I am from India. India for thousands of years remains warm host to alien religions, Islam and Christianity, as long as they didn't strike a heart blow to the Hindu-Vedic roots. Evangelicals of the new genre could not buy all politicians since majority of whom are not so greedy to sell themselves for bribes, and are not such total betrayers of their own religio-cultural roots. Hence the E's, to keep themselves busy, getting their pay from their US/Western masters, have devised other devices.
You may be onto something. There is one fact that doesn't often get into this discussion. Evangelicalism in China and India is booming right now, whether it be in the village or the city. Evangelicalism in these areas has also avoided the entanglements in politics that ensnared western Evangelicals.
FALSEHOOD, DISTORTION. Evangelicalism does not recognize any unclean means, the end being the spread of Jesus' gospel and capturing 'convertsts'. In Asia, the dubious successes in destroying Buddhist culture and religion (already more than 50% in South Korea)"inspires" the Christian missionaries of various labels to bribe politicians and administrators to carry on their work in violation of the laws, and using the device of 'non-governmental organizations' to hide Christianization work.
Margie, you are cent % right. But China has a far more ancient history than any country in the West, and its assimilation of deeply Eastern values in ethics-religion-spirituality-philosophy have historically proven unshakably deep rooted, and Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism provided the succour.
2/2 Although S.Korea has been "christianized" it is only for obs in the govt. and for some migration to US.and it is very, very superficial. In S Korea, China and India, Evangelism is ill-fated to boomerang, in the next 15 years or sooner, and Christian manslaugher is likely due to intolerance of Evangelicals. EVANGELICALISM HAS COLLAPSED IN THE WEST, IT WILL BE GIVEN A BLOODY NOSE IN THESE COUNTRIES DUE TO ITS HYPOCRISY AND SPIRITUAL HOLLOWNESS BEING GLARINGLY EXPOSED .
The dubious contention that "Christian missionaries of various labels " bribe politicians does not prove my post false but actually established it. Christian missionaries for the most part come from nations in the west, where entanglement in politics is rife. The indigenous Christians living in the countries are not bribing politicians-most of them do not have the means to do so if they wanted to
i was in a evangelical church for a few years but recently joined the catholic church, i just couldn't stand the stupidity and fads that dominated everything, i needed a rock not a fad
All denominations are bad. The Church consists of those who accepted Christ dying for their sins through FAITH (Romans 10:4-3, Romans 4:5-6, etc).
Most typical modern christianity consists of "works salvation," it is sickening.
However, the Lordship Salvation will thrive in christianity so long as catholicism and other works-salvation sects thrive. Demons always will fuel such demonations, I mean denominations (Luke 8:12-13).
I am torn on this one. They side with us on abortion, gay marriage, and family life. These guys go out into the street and challenge people about changing their lives. yet, they are very anti-catholic and anti-older Christian Churches. For them we, especially the jesuits are behind many conspiracies, not to mention the Whore, anti-Christ, etc.
I believe the boom in evangelism actually began to decline in the 70's. During the 70's there was a big push toward evangelism that lasted for awhile but did not catch on with many people. If I am not mistaken the television evangelism took off about that time and has led to what we have today. GBU
You're probably right in terms of growth percentages but it was not until the late 1970's that they had the numbers to flex their muscles. The "peak" of a movement is usually not when they are experiencing the greatest growth but when they have already reaped the rewards of that growth and are able to influence events by the numhers they have accumulated. The Evangelical message wedded itself to the "Reagan revolution" and does not know what to do since that era is passing.
By the way, here's a further sign of that era passing. Newt Gingrich, who was a key figure in much of that era and a darling of many Evangelical Christians, is entering the Catholic Church next week.
Probably a number of factors. His wife is Catholic and that likely set the ball in motion. Also, whatever one may think of his policies, he is a very smart man and an able historian. Perhaps the faddish nature of contemporary Evangelicalism has gotten to much for him.

Evangelicalism in the US today seems to have a lot of the diseases of late mediaeval Catholicism. Maybe it needs a reformation.
