Kudos to GM for taking the lead on this....doesn't it seem they should let the car roll further though? What if the fatal damage is inflicted on the second or third roll? They'll never know if that netting retards the rolling motion. Our federal 1 1/2 times body weight roof crush standard is a travesty.
@fenderstratguy kudos to gm for leading this? thats why every 80's model mercedes has been tested for roll overs and is made with a roll cage made into the car?
@fenderstratguy There are tests for each of many categories based on # of complete "rolls." In the vast majority of rollovers the vehicle stops its motion between 1-2 rolls. In belted cases, the injury values are nearly always (>98%) governed by the more intense angular momenta transferred to the occupant during the first (& possibly second) full roll. Fatal rolls are usually the result of occupant ejection, the vast majority of which occur during the 1st or 2nd full roll.
And it's a damned good thing. They need to do what they're good at, providing stupidly simple vehicles that last decades, are easy to service, cheap, and put good men to work assembling them. It's all they're good at, they might as well polish it to a shine you can put makeup on with. Idunno if you've been paying attention, but every time the US automakers try to pointlessly beat EU/Japan at their own game, they fail epically, but when they make simple, reliable vehicles that last, they sell.
Spamming technology doesn't make a car better, you know. If anything, knowing GM, it's going to make them worse.
If it works, don't fix it...besides...having a 50/60% automated assembly line as opposed to a fully automated one means you are putting good men to work that would otherwise be jobless. Helps the economy, you know.
we were going to the coast last sunday and we made it through a rollover and only my husbond and i were wearing our setbelts the rest were throun out of the van god was with us
jarzadze is right, for example Volvo has the most advanced crashtest center in the world owned by a car company, typical american ego: claiming to be the most advanced in everything...
I have a friend that rolled his cts 4 times and not one airbag deployed...Why would you spend 10M to look at airbag safety in a roll over when they don't even work. My friends car sensor came on that said service airbag. He took it to the dealership and that fixed it so the service airbag light didn't come on. Less than a month later, rolled 4 times and not one airbag deployed. GM said, "They aren't suppose to deploy in a rollover. The roof of the car was level on top of the steering wheel.
I'm sure I don't fully understand the test, but what's the point of 'rollover testing' if they don't roll the cars over? All I saw was a car that tipped onto its side.
Really, these tests are not suffecient, for one there are no net in a roll-over and second if gm doesn't stop with the cheap stuff they would'nt have to show a kiddy rollover like that. If you replace that net with a tree like simulation or wall than we could see how it keeps someone in the vechile...until then garbage.

@infantry031 I dont think so I own you to I am going to sell you to Toyota haha what now fucktard and Ford doesn't own Volvo and if you think I am lying my dad works there haha
Yeah, I drove the Aura, and I'd pick one up right now over any crappy japanese piece of shit. I own a Volvo, which is known for their seats, and I think the Aura had awesome seats, and so did the Outlook I sat in. By the way, even Consumer Reports (I.E. the most biased magazine ever!) can't deny the greatness of the Outlook. And to top it off, it looks awesome! In a Motor Trend survey, Accord owners Voted styling as the #2 Worst feature, and warranty as #1. Looks like GM Wins!
You bought a Hummer and you are bitching about gas mileage? (As if you didn't know it would get crappy MPG before you bought it).You must really be stupid.
Yeah, you can't judge GM by the Hummer, if it's not the asshole of GM, it's at least within farting distance. Drive a Saturn Aura and tell me GM sucks. Bitch.
Yeah thats definately true. I love it when these morons say "GM sucks." They never have any reasons to back up their statements. I recently had the opportunity to test drive the aura and man was it NICE. I would love to buy one but my Pontiac only has 60,000 mi on it so I see no point in trading it in just yet.
gm holds the patents for the the rollover avoidence \\\systems that toyota use the first airbags were also invented by general motors the 1973 olds toranado had them GM is on a come back roll it is the only american mega car company that is turning a profit right now and it also looks like it will buy chrysler real soon as far as volvo and mercedes goes volvo is owned by ford motor company and is built for nerds mercedes is of course a respectable auto maker for those who can afford them.
MORON! Do you honestly believe GM invented ABS or ESP?. Bosch invented ABS (acronym anti-lock braking system)in 1978 and was first introduced by Mercedes-Benz. ESP (acronym for electronic stability control)was inventing again by Bosch in 1995 and again Mercedes had it on their cars first. Stabili Trak is just a stupid name for ESP made up by GM's marketing department. ESP also goes by many, many other names depending on the manufacturer.
"GM sucks." wow arabianstig, way to show your lack of intelligence. My buick regal with over 200,000 mi still has its original motor, tranny and paint. I bet you have never even ownrd a GM vehicle.
