When I first heard this song after buying the album (I was fricken THRILLED) I was like "Hmmm, they may have been touring with Opeth a little too long..." The break in the middle of the song is gorgeous, and my favorite part of the entire album. Overall, though, I can see they're trying to be heavy too much, and it's affecting SOME of their progressive edge from IaW, SFaM, Octavarium, and SDOIT.

Change the stike or giving a new air for it its commom nowadays...

INdependent of the new songs, all of them has Dt's heart on it, and all of them are great....

these changes were natural to the band...they'd never made it once...

this album is not their best.. i really dont like it.. Count of Tuscany is really the only "wow" song for me.. and this is coming from a fan since 97.. I have all of their albums.. these last 2 albums for me have been a disappointment for the most part. they went from having melody with technical instrumentals in the song to pure heavy metal. Don't get me wrong. I love heavy metal. It's beyond me how this song charted at what 6? on the billboard, when Awake charted at 32?..

-continued- only BCSL songs i like is Wither, Shattered Fortress, and Count.. But like i said count is really the only one that stands out for me. If they wanna do heavy metal, do something along the lines of Train of Thought (although after a few listens it kinda got old). I love DT, I respect them, saw them 14th row at Radio City at their 25th anniversary, but I'm really disappointed in their direction. =( here come the negative comments

It's not pure metal... it's still progressive, just listen to this song, it's heavy, but it still has very progressive elements. I'll agree with you with that it's not their best work, but it's not a disappointment, at least not to me. It's a wonderful work of art that is better than most other metal at the time. But you really have to remember that Dream Theater IS classified as Progressive Metal

O I see... well, there is a very Floyd esk break in A Nightmare to Remember and the solo after that has a bluesy feel to it. The Best of Times reminds me of hollow years a lot. And Count of tuscany is just wow. I can't really say they dived THAT far into metal sound/tone but it is a bit more metal that usual heh. It IS your opinion after all, and I have no right to try and change it, it's not like I am anyway, eh nvm, I just get your point.

I agree with you for the most part. I have been a fan since 95 when ACOS was released. I think a lot of it has to do with them signing with Roadrunner since about 95% of the bands with the label are heavy metal. I do think this album is better than the last one, but it still not my favorite by any means. Having said that I think JP's solo on the best of times is one of his most melodic to date.

the fact that you dont like the 2 last albums or the fact that your a fan since the begining of the earth doesn't mean that those albums are a disappoinment!!. Dream theater is a band that adapts and modernized their sound and none of their albums is like the previous one, they always come up with something new and fresh!!. i personally love the 2 last albums, except for one song of systematic chaos. I love all of their albums for diferent reasons especially since Jordan Rudess joined the band

yeah but they were a disappointment for me. I just don't like the BCaSL and SC. To me, nothing will be Awake, Scenes, and Six Degrees. I think BCaSL sounds like they were trying to go heavier than Train of Thought. Train of Thought was perfect when it came to being heavy. The entire album was heavy. But not to the point where it got repetitive (black clouds kinda got repetitive) BCaSL just didn't phase me. and Systematic Chaos i just can't listen to except for Part 1 of Enemies.. thats just me

This song has me absolutely obsessed. Listening to it over and over again. Starts out spooky.. then gets scary.. then gets headbanging.. then gets mysterious.. then gets beautiful and very emotional. What a marvellous piece!!
