I respect this lady alot. True/rare talent, real voice, and very well composed. Im pissed I just knew about her recently! Much love from Canada, and keep flying high with your eclectic sound . Your'e bringing back music to what it should be from this watered down synthetic pop that has polluted radio of today.
"...however when I was writing the Arch Android, I mean, I never wrote it with the intentions of receiving anything. It was always, you know, for the people"
Making art for the sake of art, that's what an artist does.
Who cares for Grammys. Plenty of untalented losers won it, so what?
I don't think it was a racial issue as much as her type of music issue. She's more jazzy, and unfortunately that's not popular right now as it should be. Therefore she frankly just isn't popular, and the more popular you are the more likely you'll win a Grammy. But I know with her second album she'll be more popular by then and hopefully snag a Grammy.
She has the same kind of poise that Whitney Houston and Lauryn Hill when they were at that age. There's a calm assurance about her, which is found in those you are confidently aware of the rare talent that lies within them.
I am so glad to hear that she wrote with other people in mind and I just love her album. She has always had the talent to me to succeed in music and for that I love what she is doing.
I agree .We live in an age where mediocrity is the false god. Look are Katy Perry, Justin Bieber! Those guys can barely sing! True talent is overlooked especially if it isn't the right hue. I love Janelle. Saw her last year and seein her next week in London! Can't wait!
to me you can disagree but she is the female james brown of our time. her lyrical content style of dance and dress.you cant have an artist that music respresent a travel a far galaxy bck to earth.but her music has hope peace and a spritual woman to it to make it soulful. i agree totally robbed for her grammy i listen to the archandroid respectfully everyday and have songs on that album i put on repeat.janelle is different and is in a class all her own.
Something is wrong when Katy Perry the frig gets more exposure than her at the Grammys. Perry calls herself a visionary musician and says Queen is her biggest influence but all I've seen her do is wear food on her boobs and yodel. Janelle's got more substance and style than anyone I've seen in years and really enjoys what she does. It is taking way too long for her to be recognized.
I, like everyone else, wished her album was nominated of Album of the Year because it was amazing. But maybe it means that those who follow the independent circuits have a special album that only a select few know about and actually supported. I'm just glad she was recognized at all.
I wish a certain percentage of the votes for Grammy nominations, and winners, could come from the people buying the music and listening to it instead of being exclusive to record label people.
At least i'm pretty sure that's how it works. I could be totally misinformed.
I definitely think Janelle Monae should at least be nominated for Album of the Year and Best New Artist.
She is being recognized by the greats! I'm certain that if MJ were still with us, he would love her as well, maybe even collaborate. I just hope her and Stevie and/or Prince can collaborate on her next effort even if it's just development of her as an artist or writing...THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!
Everybody in my family is getting this cd for Christmas if I missed them earlier in the year. Most of them have already been hooked up and concur - she is the most brilliant artist to emerge in a LONG time (among young artists)! I'm going to record the Grammy's in hopes that fairness will prevail on her behalf. NOBODY else deserves to win more than she does. Love this girl!!!
the QUINDARO RUINS / UNDERGROUND RAILROAD- Exercise 2011 takes the liberty of expressing the utmost appreciation and congratulations for your UN-describeable and awesome achievement and successes. Thank YOU Ms. Janelle, your mother tells everybody, over and OVER about how fabulous your career decisions were turning - out !!! But she, never mentioned that your debut album: would be GRAMMY Nomination material !!! In KC- we are so PROUD of YOU ! Continued Best-
@kittyrockzz I was too. That was a surprise move for the Grammys as well. I'm sure it won't will, but "The Archandroid" should have at least been nominated in my opinion.
@kittyrockzz Because Katy's label most likely PAID for that nomination. I myself seriously cannot understand how it garnered a nod for AOTY when:
a) It received lukewarm to negative reviews and
b) It did not sell all that well.
Normally to receive such a big nod, your album must have at least one of the two things going on for it. The ArchAndroid received near-unanimous positive reviews, yet it got shut out of the AOTY nomination.
All of those artists' albums that are nominated for AOTY were critically acclaimed and did well commercially. It makes Katy's presence in that category all the more suspicious. It's like Twilight getting an Oscar nod for Best Picture. Proof that award shows have ZERO credibility, especially these days.
@kittyrockzz truly, she is recognized my Prince and Stevie and I'm sure Michael if he was still here! Her artistry and hardwork and team speaks for themselves!!
I love this womnan. So humble. But she was Robbed!!!
I hate to say this but Im sure if she were white she would have been called the saviour of pop music and gotten all awards but instead they put her in a box of Rnb and Urban!!! SIGH
dam, cool down guy. she just started her career. She is in full control of her art. Could you imagine how much ppl are working on this, to have the show go on?
Enough to please your common habbits. But isnt it funny how we all scream "get her nominated, let her win!!! Heck yes!"
And how sad it it is, that you all got be blinded so by the media....
There are only few words to describe J.M. ......
Find the own ones while you R dancing inside your MIND
1) Janelle Monae does many forms of Pop (Popular music) on her Album. Rock (come alive), Hip hop (Dance or die), Sugary pop (Wondaland, Make the Bus etc), Folk (57821), Disco (Locked Inside), Funk (Tightrop), Brazillian (Babopeye), Ballads (Say you'll go), Soul (Oh, Maker) and Even classical (Overtures). The share Variety should have put her in the Pop Category and not just Rnb
2) It unfortunaley is about race. Amy Winehouse, Adele anm Justin Timerlake Duffys albums were all more Standard Rnb and Soul. But all were put in a Promoted as Pop artists to Instead, got more exposure and got more Accolades.
3) All I am saying is that Record comapies should start Promoting artists on their Talent rather than their things like Race and Demographical fears.
4)And yes I do feel that she would have been way more successful if white! Remember Michael Jackson had to struggle to get on MTV in the mid 1980s!!! and he even still felt the need to bleach his skin to get more Successful!!!
@00tuoyo She had an earlier album, without the Cindi Mayweather persona, and its genre came up in my iTunes as 'Classical Wondafunk'. I like that a lot. It's the most evocative label I've yet herd for her style. But last night's Grammys proved, I think, that Bruno Mars may be the saviour of pop.
1)I just think she's Pop because of her Sheer Variety like Madonna. Madonna has done songs from dance, to country and Disco a couple of years ago!
2) To be honest I dont even know how to describe Pop. I was just saw a weird pattern that when a White Person sang R&B, Soul or Jazz it was considered Pop (Michael Buble, Timerberlake, Winehouse, Duffy) etc. and got more exposure.
@00tuoyo i am white and as the ambassador and arbiter of all things white i completely agree. i've thought the same things many times since i first heard her music. i can't believe archandroid wasn't nominated for best album, much less that it didn't win (which is alot to say as that would mean taking away the award from my canadian bretheren in arcade fire). oh well, i just hope more people got exposure to her music from this performance.
1) Agreed! Maybe her album wasnt accessible enough to the Mainstream. Perhaps she could do with catchier hooks and melodies without sacrificing the Musical quality.
2) I cant wait wait to see what she does on her second album. She is apparently already recording!
@00tuoyo It's sad....because her sound changes constantly during the album! Plus she has a classical influence and Jazz influence in her music yet she can rock out! I mean C'mon she has a Picture with her and Mick Jagger. If Mick knows who she is THAT is saying something!
BUT NOOOOO all the talentless hacks like Ke$ha get all the recognition -____- because they talk about getting naked on a friday night =___= SMH,SMGDH
her style is sooooo sooo sophisticated and simple but creative and beautiful at the same time

She deserved more nominations, album of the year for sure. I was so angry to see katy parry's teenage dream on that category.
But anyways, she has credibility that is more important than an award.
