Commodore international was in the red but Commodore UK and Commodore germany were doing really really well, so i thought was there a possibility that they both could continue and possibly buy the parent company? Or was that a no no based on some bullshitty business aggrement? hmm...would love to see commodore in some form still around (todays amiga os scene doesnt count)
If you call 3 years "no time," then, yeah, the N64 beat it to the punch.
But, seriously. The CD32 was only officially released in Europe and in Canada in 1993; Commodore was hit with an injunction that barred their products from being sold in the U.S. since they had to settle a debt, which caused them to go bankrupt.
The games didn't matter as Commodore was in bad shape, which doomed the CD32.
And, the first 32-bit console in the world is the 1991 Fujitsu FM Towns Marty.
Oh man, was this the disc that had the "in yo face, in yo face, in yo face" little thing on it? If so, could you please post that? I'd love to see/hear it again.
The CD32 was the most powerful system when it came out in 1993 (ahead of CDi and MegaCD) the 3DO didnt come out until 1994, also CD32 game sales were over 50% of the CD market (CDi 1%, Mega CD 20% odd, and PC CDROM 28% odd) pity Commodore US went bankrupt and dragged the rest of Commodore down with it, the UK branch was well in the money at the time...
From what I remember it had quite a few games, but most of them were just A1200 ports with some extra features if you were lucky. Very little written specifically for it.
Heh I still got this CD for my CD32. I asked Commodore back in the day... and got it. Man I still now the text by heart. I showed it fairs and a lot of people watched it :D
This brings back memories of a dying commodore. I owned a 1200 with cdrom add-on. When i emulated these cd32 games i was pretty gutted. The software companys only ported most 1200 games to cd with cd audio and "FMV"!!! full motion video intro`s etc. What a shit load of fuck. That intro came with my amiga cdrom. It was just a video and never even used the graphic chip set. The t-rex! What game is that off? and the jets. Oh was that fighter bomber 2! No. Just video.
The 1200 was little more than a year old when the CD32 came out. which console had better technology and a faster drive? Remember to be this good will take Sega ages :-)
I guess by your name that your are a true Amiga fan, but let's face the truth: The AGA chipset and especially the so-called Chip ram was in fact quite slow, not to mention the 68EC020 cpu. The CD32 wasn't even able to beat the SNES. The 3DO, which was released around the same time, was much more powerful. The double-speed CD-ROM drive was really the only good part of the CD32. And beleve it or not, but most games forced the drive to single-speed...
In the CD32's defence, the 3DO was horribly expensive. The CD32 was far from cutting-edge (being basically an A1200 plus CD plus scaler chip, minus keyboard).
Heard that it actually sold respectably (in the UK at least) until C= went kaput. Was never a runaway success and would've sunk without trace when the PS came out anyway, but as a cheapo cash cow it was probably okay.
Better idea than the "horribly expensive and little worthwhile software" CDTV.

Looks crap now, just like the Xbox 360 and PS3 will look in 10 years from now.

Man I love this kind of stuff. Commodore's promotion really was piss poor. Was the worst kind of fanboy for Amiga at the time though.

I have the Amiga 32CD for collection purposes only. It simply exists. I don't even have a game for it.
alexander4488 4 years ago
Did it have any copy protection on the CDs? I'd doubt it (especially as CD burners were still horrifically expensive at the time).
So my guess is that you can probably go online and... obtain some, uh... *legal* ISO images of games.

The CD32 could have been great but lacked games. That killed it and virtually all other consoles that disappeared quickly.

Why is it that virtually every Amiga-related commercial is so terribly written? I blame Mehdi Ali.

U should really compare like with like. The PS1 was not out at the same time as the CD32, which was by far the most powerful console of its time.
AmigaRetro 5 years ago
Not really. It was just a 1200, already outdated technology, in a different case with a slow CD-ROM drive.
