Not all of the air from the room could have escaped through the window. The room would have filled up until a little over the top of the window because after all the water blocks air's way to escape through the window, air would prevent water from replacing its place. This is vacuum.
Go ahead and try drilling a hole on the side of a plastic bottle and holding it under water and see how much of it fills up!

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Charlie was a candidate after all.
The real Mikhail died in an episode before this, when he tried to go through the fence. As we know, the MiB can take the form of the dead. MiB simply took Mikhail's form, and that is how he survived being harpooned in the chest earlier in this episode. The reason he does this is to indirectly kill charlie (similar to how the MiB killed Sun and Jin).

I think it would have been better if charlie had died but played a more pivotal role on the island. Such as appearing to Hurley on a frequent basis and being part of the time traveling experience. Desmond changes something in season 5 making charlie exist somehow because Desmond is special and uneffected by time travel effects. Just some ideas

@danX2TV Because Desmond convinced Charlie that because of his visions, if he died, then Claire and Aaron would be rescued, well atleast to my knowledge, that's why.
Remember, when Desmond kept saving Charlie, there was a time when Des told Charlie that he saw him drown in a room with a flashing light, but then he saw Claire getting rescued. Charlie thought he had to die in order for Claire to be rescued, and in a certain sense given the finale, and if you think his death some of the course of events, then his death did end up saving Claire in the very end. But that was why he didn't try to escape.
I'm confused as to why he didn't close the door after walking out of it himself, he had time...but this is such a sad scene :( Charlie was my favourite character
@spunkflunk the door only locked from the inside, so all the water would have rushed through the open door and the ship would have sunk, + charlie wanted to die a hero.
The real reason is because they were underwater. If he had not closed the door, Desmond would have died as well. Charlie had to save someone after he was saved from his addiction, so he did the only thing he could.

Ich habe Sawyer von anfang an gehasst und habe Charly gewünscht das er bis zum Schluss durchhält weil er echt ein klasse Kerl war,aber bei der Szene hatte ich am schluss das Gesicht klitsch nass und das war kein Pazifik Wasser. Dafür habe ich Desmond mehr als verflucht!!

Remember, when Desmond kept saving Charlie, there was a time when Des told Charlie that he saw him drown in a room with a flashing light, but then he saw Claire getting rescued. Charlie thought he had to die in order for Claire to be rescued, and in a certain sense given the finale, and if you think his death some of the course of events, then his death did end up saving Claire in the very end. But that was why he didn't try to escape.

The real reason is because they were underwater. If he had not closed the door, Desmond would have died as well. Charlie had to save someone after he was saved from his addiction, so he did the only thing he could.

Desmond was having visions of Charlie dieing in different ways so he saved him everytime. but once Charlie heard that in one of Desmonds visions Claire and aaron would be saved he decided to die to help them get off the island.
But the vision never came true.
