If this movie hadn't had everything exactly as it is, this movie would've been forgotten after it's release. The storyline, the performances, the outfits are perfection to make it the last word and the very definition of "Camp".
Patty Duke totally ROCKED in Valley of the Dolls - Neely O'Hara is the plumb part of the whole movie, in my opinion, and she RAN with it. She was damn sexy, too. Paul Burke was great also....
Without Patty no one would even care about this movie now it's a cult classic. Patty was over the top but I like others blame that on the director for not reeling Neely in a little. Patty had nothing to prove in this movie. But it took its toll on her major motion picture career.
Well, actually, Barbara Parkins did do a Screen Test for this role but her performance was about as exciting as watching Paint dry ~ so Barbara Parkins landed the less challenging role of Anne Welles and PATTY DUKE did the role of Neely - maybe her performance was a little over the top but without PATTY DUKE in the movie it would be a real snoozer.
Interesting to hear her readings here...they're much more realistic and believable than in the finished film. I think the director is partly responsible for her hyperbolic, campy performance. She should have stuck with her instincts....they would have served her better.
Patty said she wanted that role so much because she had been "America's Sweetheart" and she wanted to break out of that and be seen as a real actress.
there was a nightime soap opera that was based on valley of the dolls that was also called "valley of the dolls. it was a syndicated soap and it aired for 13 weeks in 1994. does anyone happen to have episodes of the 90's version
I wonder if Patty's Scottish cousin from her TV sitcom screen tested for the role too? THANKS for posting this rare but fascinating footage!

Disagree. The movie is more infamous because of the murder of Sharon Tate, I would think.

lol, i love how an Academy Award winner (she won for supporting in 1962 for The Miracle Worker) needed to prove herself as a real actress. lol
i hate how hollywood operates sometimes ;)

She looked looped doing that. Did she try for realism by getting her dolls early? she's fantastic!Love the Duke or is it Anna?

Screen test are so tough, but she did well. Would love to see the wardrobe and makeup reels too.
