I picked up this game from a used game store for $5. It's not bad, I agree with most of the points made in the video, but I have one serious complaint. there is a gaping flaw in the controls. Whenever you turn around or go between standing and crouching, Jay does this little 2 frame animation. During this animation, YOU CAN'T JUMP. You can shoot no problem, but when I play a platform game, or any game where jumping is important, and I press the jump button when i'm on the ground, I should jump.
@lamasu He's not ripping off, he's paying tribute to the AVGN. He says he was inspired by him. If you want to see an actual rip-off. Watch the IrateGamer.
I love this game. I have had it since childhood and you would have to kill me to get my copy of the game. I would even feed myself to hungry zombies before letting the game go.
I recently downloaded a rom to play this game and I gotta be honest, I didn't like it that much. Two problems I have with this game, one is that you can't scroll back in the levels to maybe check back on respawn enemies to get items from them, which brings me to my second problem, healing items rarely appear, usually you get nothing, or just ammo for your guns and that's it, and that just makes a difficult game even more difficult. I enjoy a challenging game, but I want a fair challenge.
Also, the game really doesn't feel anything special to me, it feels just like any other shooter to me. I don't know, I feel like Megaman, Contra, and Darwing Duck are much better games, so everytime I was playing Journey to Silius, I felt like turning it off and play those other games instead.
@Tailikku1 I bet you he did since he explained this game's connection to Terminator in the video.
This review, however, did convince me to buy the game from a used game store not too long ago. For the low low price of $3. I must say I was not disappointed (though I've yet to beat it! Level 4 trips me up with those falling blocks, not to mention the midboss!).
@emperorIng360 I don't think I ever got that far in this game, I think you ran so fast and enemies came at you so fast, not to mention I think you had limited lives and then had to start back at the beginning. There are a few walkthroughs for this game on Youtube and also written on GameFAQs (not promoting any other site) If you like this game and are looking for obscure NES games try Metal Storm kinda rare and expensive but worth it! The same reviewer as this game HVGN reviewed it! IT'S A GEM!
There was a Terminator 1 game for the NES, developed by Radical Entertainment. It sucked. It's liked Nintendo WANTED Terminator to suck so they told Sunsoft "Sorry your game is good. We need a shitty Terminator game."
@Dreamewalker Radical Entertainment also developed other craptastic gems on the NES including Wayne's World (Which I did a review on), Rocky and Bullwinkle, and the Mario edutainment games.
@frozenkiller7 I think IrateGamer's problem is that he steals too much from AVGN's formula. He seemed like he could have the potential to make something interesting... If he would have just gone with his own formula. Not just the name, but he really stole a lot of Jame's Rolfe's commonalities.
exactly! he tries to be a clone of the person, when he is but the misshapen forms of him, collapsing onto himself due to his emptiness at heart. have fun kiddies
I noticed that both AVGN and Irate Gamer ether remakes or revisit games that they reviewed so this makes me wonder if you plan to do same thing with your oldest game reviews like Journey to Silius or Metal Strom?
I just wanted to say that I have never played Jouney to Silius, I never even heard of it until I watched this video, yet the intro theme was STILL stuck in my head weeks later. As a hardcore fan of video game music, I have to own this game.
@DGMRuadeil Why the hell did people always give LJN the licence to make a game based on their movies? Seriously, Back to the Future, Jaws, Beetle juice, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St, Terminator, Roger Rabbit, Karate Kid, X-Men, Spiderman games, etc.
Hey man, nice video! I too have been playing this game since I was a kid, and the soundtrack in indelibly printed into my brain. In fact, I have a video game cover band and we cover some songs from this game if you want to check it out. I don't think this thing will let me post a video I didn't personally make, so just look for "Descendants Of Erdrick Journey To Silius" and I'm sure it will be there somewhere.
@me477777 There was no real story to this game, as he mentions. Basically, your dad dies, he tells you to go get a disk and continue his work, but you instead preside to take revenge on the ones who killed him. Ultimately when you beat the game, none of it concludes.
Wow, how'd I recall or remember that the ending music was from the Goonies 2 password input screen? I never once wrote down or put in a password for this game, so how could I remember it? Odd...
When you said "beating a game you couldnt beat as a kid its a great fucking feeling" i immediatly thought of myself and Kirby 64, it felt so good when i beated Miracle Matter, i almost cried because of the happiness :D
i get that you like AVGN and that this is inspired by James, but your theme seems to kind of bash him, which isn't cool. I just found out about you, and I think what you do is awesome... I just thought I should let you know that.
@thevisualboy37 I never saw the two as ripping off of each other in the first place.
Honestly, reviewers of the past had already beat AVGN to it and anyone else before reviewing games so it's hardly his own material. Not to mention, James Rolf has his eyes on bigger things. AVGN was just some silly thing he did on the side.
Lots of people such as Spoony needs to realize that when you review a game, it's not your material. So when someone else reviews something you reviewed, there's no violation.
@thevisualboy37 In case anyone is ever afraid of their stuff being copied, think of it as almost of a compliment.
It means what you made, is that good enough that it inspires others to want to expand on your very idea. This is why James wasn't angry, he was flattered. ^^d
This very understanding has made me more confident with my games.
@thedragonb0y But who's going to show us the mediocre titles? WHO? You've just inspired me to create the Apathetic Video Game Nerd with his catchphases like, "whatever, man" and "it's pretty okay, i guess."
actually you can stop/change direction of your fall but you have to be in the air for a LONG time (like 6-7 seconds) which only really happens in the lab stage and that's if you do it right... or when you're falling to your death. (sometimes.)
"Beating a game that you couldn't beat as a kid -- it's a great fuckin' feeling."
OH. MY GOD. SO FUCKING TRUE.
One day, as a middle schooler, I randomly decided to whip out my Nintendo 64 and played through Star Wars Episode I: racer and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
@Alex999139: I'll second that! I got Majora's Mask as a Christmas present in 2005. I didn't beat for the first time until August of last year. Ah, good times....
@TheDoopliss2 - That was my first thought too back in the day.. but the more you play Journey to Silicus you'll see that the differences are many. I love Mega Man (I'm playing Mega Man X2 on a emultor as we speak, almost) but Journey to Silicus is a great game in it's own right. One of my favorites on the NES.
@GeorgVanHalen i played it on an online site but scents i hate playing with the computer controlls i wanted to play with the original play pad controller and i couldnt play it without dieing and i think the avgn shoulda reviewd this in his reviews of termanotor games
the last level of this game has NO enemies (until the bosses) but has to be played perfect. It looks easy but it's surely not it takes alot of practice or even more luck. I recommend it highly !
I love the music on this game, sometimes i play it just for the soundtrack, but i can never beat that freakin' helecopter at the end of the first level.
its journey to silius in europe too. i think its RAF world in japan. btw one of my favorite nes games of all time. i mean its not megaman, but still...
This video is awesome, Journey to Silius is a massively under-rated game. I was fortunate enough that my parents bought it on a whim and to this day I say it's one of the most solid NES games. Excellent soundtrack as well.
Just picked up a fully restored NES and couldn't wait to break out my Journey to Silius cartridge. I fucking love this game!
This game is an unsung classic that, without a doubt, has some of the best music I've ever heard in an NES game. We definitely need some Remix artists to actually show some love for this soundtrack.
the biotch of it all is that t1 nes was still made 1 year after Journey to silius....FIGURE THAT! what a friggin load of crap, not to mention t1 nes is a piece of ass.
@Gretgor666 The way I see it, HVGN and AVGN are the same kind of reviewers but they just use different games, it's like peanut butter and jelly, can't have one without the other sometimes.
@MrZhabadasher While true, it's also not a rip off, as he clearly has his own style and has acknowledged James as inspiration. Yes, there are little touches like instead of beer, the Happy Nerd drinks wine, but he does his own thing and goes into an area the AVGN rarely ventures into. I mean, it's not like HVGN is the Irate Gamer or anything, Derek seems to have his own schtick, but still acknowledges the inspiration behind it.
The game wasn't named Raf World in Europe as mentioned in the video (it was the same name as in NA, but the main-character's sprite was the same as in the japanese version), that was however the title in Japan. The "raf" in the JP title is written in phonetics, so I guess it is supposed to mean "Rough World", hence the difficulty of the game :P
I picked up this game from a used game store for $5. It's not bad, I agree with most of the points made in the video, but I have one serious complaint. there is a gaping flaw in the controls. I bought this game a few days after i saw this review, its a really good game ^^
It tooked a while to beat the game but after a while its gets easier and easier.
Now when i play the game i often gets to the last level without dying one singel time :) Late level is a bitch tho ^^

This video is awesome, Journey to Silius is a massively under-rated game. I was fortunate enough that my parents bought it on a whim and to this day I say it's one of the most solid NES games. Excellent soundtrack as well.

I greatly prefer these reviews when compared to the shtick that you find elsewhere.
Kudos bro.

It's NES, IT DOESN'T NEED A STORY!
Vashthestampdee 1 year ago
Just picked up a fully restored NES and couldn't wait to break out my Journey to Silius cartridge. I fucking love this game!
This game is an unsung classic that, without a doubt, has some of the best music I've ever heard in an NES game. We definitely need some Remix artists to actually show some love for this soundtrack.

It's okay to be happy, but this is as happy as you can get.

the biotch of it all is that t1 nes was still made 1 year after Journey to silius....FIGURE THAT! what a friggin load of crap, not to mention t1 nes is a piece of ass.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Your gay voice and the fact that you say "Ness" instead of N E S irritate me. Other than that you are awesome.

In 16 years, I have never managed to play it to the end.

5 levels, 3 lives per level (continue from checkpoints), few health pickups.
If you die three times in a level, you start it over.
If you wait too long on the GAME OVER screen, you start the whole game over again.

I don't get all these people not understanding the fact that this is an intentional parody, not a rip off. ¬¬

if you get to the point where people hate you for dumb reasons, youve made it somewhere.

@Gretgor666 The way I see it, HVGN and AVGN are the same kind of reviewers but they just use different games, it's like peanut butter and jelly, can't have one without the other sometimes.
AlexAceDDR 1 year ago
@Gretgor666 exactly :)
TheReasonWhyGuy 1 year ago
@Gretgor666 Probably because parody usually implies sarcasm/irony pointed at the target of the parody. One joke doesnt make it a parody.
MrZhabadasher 1 year ago
@MrZhabadasher While true, it's also not a rip off, as he clearly has his own style and has acknowledged James as inspiration. Yes, there are little touches like instead of beer, the Happy Nerd drinks wine, but he does his own thing and goes into an area the AVGN rarely ventures into. I mean, it's not like HVGN is the Irate Gamer or anything, Derek seems to have his own schtick, but still acknowledges the inspiration behind it.
Doop3r 1 year ago
@Doop3r Agreed. he is not a parody or a rip-off.

it a good tribute to avgn... its good videogame reviewing. not great and original like little miss gamer or still gaming but its good i like it
raulramonramiro 2 years ago 3
The game wasn't named Raf World in Europe as mentioned in the video (it was the same name as in NA, but the main-character's sprite was the same as in the japanese version), that was however the title in Japan. The "raf" in the JP title is written in phonetics, so I guess it is supposed to mean "Rough World", hence the difficulty of the game :P
Great video though!

To bad because this game would have been a kick ass terminator game.

This game was originally going to be a terminator game but Sunsoft lost the rights at the last minute.
