I can't speak for Dr. Umar, but I have done some study, and if you shave donor area first 10 days before transplantation, hair that grows is in the best stage for regeneration when transplanted to the scalp.
Do any of these doctors perform transplants for black men? Would it work the same since black men hair is different? Can a black man beard hair be transplanted as well?

Yes they do, and black men hair is normal ticker then white men hair. So you will normally getting better result.
