I think he became a source of support to her during this period,but he was hoping for more.Victor returned,cleared up the misunderstandings,proposed to nikki and eventually she accepted..

He introduced himself to nicki whilst she was lunching and this was during the period victor was out of town catching up on his exes...
Max asked her out to dinner and I think nikki accepted his invite out of spite for victor
