I learned how to drive a stick shift in a piece of shit 1984 Toyota pick-up. It didn't have the shift pattern printed on the shifter knob and it didn't have an RPM gauge. That was kind of tough not knowing where any of the gears were and when to shift but after a while it's second nature and you don't need the diagram or the RPM gauge. My current car is a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue GL with an automatic (no manual offered). It's a fun car to drive but it'd be more fun if I could shift my own gears.

I think a diesel truck is actually a good vehicle to learn on. Lots of low end torque makes it harder to stall (unless you start off in the wrong gear!).

A few years ago, my dad had a 1979 Chevy 1 ton flatbed truck with a hydraulic dump for the flatbed. That thing had a 350 and a 4 speed stick - a low gear and 3 road gears. The clutch on that was shot - everytime you started out, the whole truck jumped up and down like crazy!
