  • The room needs some more care for a perfect comparisson but good job!

  • I wud love to c one mic tested at different angles close to snare, pointed at edge, pointed at center, angled down at 45 degrees, angled straight across snare, etc!

  • I thought the 57 and 421 sounded best moved furthest away from snare! 421 lil better than 57!

  • I like the 421. I own four of them and in my opinion, they KILL the SM57, the Beta 57, or the i5.

  • The 421 sounds like it has been dropped one too many times.

My two personal faves in this clip are the 57 and the 414.

BTW, your 414 looks like an EB model. Does it have the original CK12 capsule? I have a 414eb with the CK12 and it is by far my favourite mic.

  • @AusDisciple I meant to say "brass" CK12 capsule. The early 414eb's had the brass capsule as opposed to the teflon version which was not as good. If yours has the brass version, DON'T sell it!!!!! .....unless you want to sell it to me. ;-)

  • fantastic vid, really well done...

  • why are everyone's 421's always broken? take care of your mics!

  • @Buhzie15 They are poorly designed and always break eventually or start dropping your mic. These ones were at a University so they never had any hope.

  • @theDAWstudio yea, i guess if students are constantly working with them, they're bound to break. It's weird though. I ALWAYS see broken 421's. It would be nice if Sennheiser upgraded it to a nice metal mount or something...

  • @Buhzie15 Actually if you record a lot, you would know how terribly made the 421 mic clip is... there is a very easy to trigger ""eject" type button... this gets really old cause they keep falling out, so the tape is to keep the mic on its clip

  • @Buhzie15 One day you will grab a 421 to try to slightly change its position and you will grab the release clip dropping it straight to the floor... Its inevitable unless you tape up the mic like shown.

  • I liked the 414 in the 2nd position the best. Luck has it that I have a couple 414's...now I must go try. I agree with most others that the AEA sounded horrible. I have and love a Royer 122 (best mic I have ever bought, by a pretty wide margin), and have been curious about AEA, but clips like this make me want to stay far away.

  • Sm57 for sure. Has the best, full sounding tones. The other mics mainly sound like you're hearing the snare from the back of a large hall or something.

  • If you can, try the Audix i5 and D1 (both are great, and different from each other).

  • As usual, the AEA ribbon is worst as it is in 95% of recording situations. If you want the "warmth" of a Ribbon with an SM57, simply use any eq to pull out 4db at 6K, pull 2 db at 9k and apply a low pass filter at 10K. The bonus is you will have a Cardioid pattern, High SPL, high maneuverability, high reliability and all for around $100. Why spend $1500+ on a mic that is useless 95% of the time?

  • I luv how you have the 421 taped up. I have to do the same thing because those stupid clips will release at the drop of a hat.

  • what was the third mic?

  • @greatkid1 It is an AKG 414. The new ones look a little different, but they are still a staple for instrument recording in studios.

  • 2nd to last mic with 2nd position is my favorite because it makes the drum sound bit

  • big*

  • nice vid!!!

I bought a drum rudiment poster and dvd at

    DrumRudimentPoster.comx-minus the x :) it rocks!!!

  • Overall, I though the U87 sounded the best - like, it brought out a good realistic quality for the drum in that situation. I really liked the old-school quality of the AEA, though. That being said, I don't think I'd ever use either to record a snare drum, especially since I'm a kit player.

  • second angle with the SM57 is the best imo

  • @Deadmeatproductions Agree :)

  • @Deadmeatproductions I kinda like the third one but I guess is the ultimately the sound you want in the end.

  • 0:05 is my favorite

  • lol too bad your gonna have like every drum in between the second position, making it pretty impossible to cancel out the rest of the drums

  • last mic is shit

  • Gotta love that ribbon mic. Instant stax sound !

  • 2nd mic with the 2nd position is my fav

  • DO AN OVER HEAD!!!!!

  • DO A BARREL ROLL

  • Pour moi, le sm 57 est vraiment le meilleur :-)

For me, The sm57 is verry the best:-)

  • Not too useful unless you are intending to record the snare in isolation. Love the smoothness of the AEA, sod letting a drummer near that with a stick, or any other lgr for that matter!

  • depending on the sound you want i like the 1st and second placements of the 57. that mic always seems to be unbeatable. i think one position you should have included was a closer, and harsher angle, closer to the snare. but great vid!

  • Nice vid. Imo the second placement of the Rode sounded best. Gives a nice blend of the snare top and bottom with only one mic. Still needs more snare bottom though.

    Cool vid, nonetheless. :)

  • I think the 2nd placement of the SM57 sounds best.
