I was really looking forwards to this film after seeing this trailor but found it really boring. I didn't think the fight scenes were visually beautiful (like crouching tiger hidden dragon etc) or alternatively, realistic. Also,the story line failed to engage me. I think the acting and directing (apart from fight scenes) was largely good though. All in all, I think this film was let down by the script and fight scenes. Could have been much better.

That chain punch at 1:00 was brutal, you should see the entire scene though, The actor really portrays the art of Wing Chun and it's uses against a different martial art.

YIP MAN, was the teacher of Bruce Lee. The movie is based on true facts during the early 1930'-40s. Although its a martial arts bio-pic, the characters are very well written and the cinematography is brilliant. Very good movie. Don't fall for the trailer, its not just fight scenes, has lots of plot and takes the viewer on an emotional journey during the war period. This could easily win an Oscar for foreign film. 5 stars

I just love this move! The contrast between the different styles is amazing. I study Nam Wah Pai, which is a mix of southern and northern styles founded in singapore.
I bought this DVD and man it was beautiful Donnie gives and epic performance as IPman fight scences were awesome donnies acting was so good it over shadowed the fight scences in my opionon it tells the epic story of IPman back then and how he had to go threw hard times and how he with stud the Japanese invasion and what he truly stud for legendary I see where bruce got some his beliefs about martal arts from Ipman he had those same values he installed to Bruce.

One thing that boggles my mind is the scene with the Japanese general giving food to Ip Man. Ip Man says "you invaded our country and killed our people, stop be hypocritical." This saying has stuck in my head because China also has been (and still is) brutally oppressive in its own invasions of other countries (such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, etc) and killed many ppl.
t wasn't as bad as Japanese invasion of China. Did you know Japan caused $383 billion dollars worth of property damage in China (90 times Japan's GDP n 1937)..... by comparison, Imperial Japan's 1937 GDP was a tiny $7.7 billion compared to the $383 billion dollars and 30 million lives lost.

Majority of Hollywood would never be open minded to this kind of film unless Jackie Chan is involved. Donnie Yen is a beast and highly underrated in the West.
I watched this movie over and over and over due to the match he had with the japs in the dojo! Sucha a raw powerful scene of anger and revengeful emotion!!! Under such duress!! Instant Classic!

FUCK THAT >> there is no justice in the world .. i would take this movie over a bunch of vomit like Terminator 4, Transformers, Die Hard 4 and any other such type HW crap at the drop of a hat

This is not only a martial arts movie, its a story only life can write. Of course its adapted, polished and presented in the best possible manner ... a true masterpiece.

I've watched this movie 12 times in the last 2 months. I just can't get enough of it.

i've just watched the movie and well, all i've got to say is... amazing .
this was one of the best martial arts movies i've ever seen,
it has unlike other fighting movies an amazing story which is actually based on true facts.
Donny yen was the perfect choice for this, he did an excellent job.
Can't wait for the second part :D

what f..g boggles my mind is why this great movie is so underexposed worldwide and in the states... a whole lot of worthless crap makes it's way into rotten tomatoes and metacritic scores while this epic flick is not even listed.. FUCK THAT >> there is no justice in the world .. i would take this movie over a bunch of vomit like Terminator 4, Transformers, Die Hard 4 and any other such type HW crap at the drop of a hat
