I hated New kids on the block but Wahlberg fucking ruled this scene. Unforgettable. Didn't like the movie that much because i already knew from that point on that Bruce Willis was a ghost. But the role of Wahlberg i never forget. At first i didn't recognise him. Just after the credits i realised it was him.

He did die. The story is that its sort of like his ghost going round but hes not actually a ghost. And the reason why the little boy talks to him is because he sees dead people. Notice that noone else talks to him at all throughout the whole film ... its because they can't see him

@Bulletpierce i was just kinda confused from the second scene... like the man gets killed, and then it's "the last fall" where he's alive and a little boy. and who was the freak that killed the guy in the very beginning? and then in the end it turns out that the guy was dead but he didnt know it, and only the boy could see him so how could his mom...? i was just confused the whole time but i watched it lol

@shiningstars1997 Bruce Willis is not the little boy. The "freak" is a patient who had Cole's problem, but no one in the right mind would believe anyone could see ghosts. So, Bruce Willis's character fails to help him. Then, Wilis's character dies (doesnt know it), meets Cole. Cole kind of helps him to realize he's dead. He can die knowing that he helped save ANOTHER little boy with the same problem as the first suicide patient that he failed. He's righting past wrongs through another kid.

I don't think it's actually expressly stated anywhere that the guy who kills Willis had Cole's exact problem, but their psych evals are so similar that I think the viewer can assume they both see dead people.

@Bulletpierce maybe it goes like this,that guy in the beggining with the gun might have been a patient of bruce but bruce in the past and didnt believe his past stories and left and was done with that particular client.. and another thing is i think he Mom COULDNT see him as the mom and bruce dont talk at all.. maybe those scenes were meant to trick us to make a twist that we'll find out bruce was dead in the end.

I guess I would say that with the "struggles" that he and his wife are going through, it would seem all but natural him that no interaction existed there. As to the kid, the movie suggests that the spirits of the dead are pulled in by the young boys ability to communicate with them. And since the dead can "only see what they want to see", and since he is so obsessed with his work, it would seem normal for him to not even notice.

@cruzman3608 I think that the ghosts slip in and out of "being." If they were always hovering around, there'd be so many ghosts swarming Cole at once that it would be ridiculous. So he's only aware of himself every so often, when he is talking to Cole and sometimes to his wife. Otherwise, he would probably catch on. Also, he was drawn to Cole and his "Sixth Sense." Later in the movie, Cole said that ghosts "Only see what they want to see," so he probably has some fake "memory" of being assigned.
