It's such a shame her OWN TEAM forced her to fake a knee injury just so Gutsu could compete. They were going to bump Bogi but thought it would be too scandalous because she was famous so they scratched the younger athlete. I mean it's not like Galieva trained hard and worked hard for this competition too. She says she still feels bitter about this turn of events. I'd be pissed too.
I wish they could of at least said she was ill the day of the all-around then she could of competed in an event final instead of faking a knee injury which takes her out of the competition =(
This routine seems to signify the end of the one of the greatest eras in gymnasts - the tiny pixie gymnast that can dance AND tumble. Where are they now? Sigh.
wow, didn't realize how good she was in 92 until seeing this. the EUN was correct. she probably could've contended for top 3 or top 6 in the AA, but there was no guarantee 4 gold with her over gutsu.
I'm sure Roza would have stuck all her routines if she did the AA, but unfortunately she did not have the reputation of Gutsu, and you know judging- it's all about the rep!
I know Roza was psychologically unsound, or whatever it was Alexandrov called her, and I know Tatiana was a much better hope for the gold, but I will always feel sad for Roza. She was so good and tried so hard.
@GymFloozie You misinterpreted Alexandrov. He said Roza was not psychologically prepared. This means that she was not set aside and coached on how to be a "winner" by the National team. Roza was supposed to be a nameless (former) Soviet there to fill out the team. The AA gymnasts were selected two years earlier. Roza unexpectedly began "over performing" in the 1990-91 season. She earned a World and Olympic berth but was the wasted talent that peaked out of sequence with the reliable system.
No its just harder to do back to back passes and get connection. And we all know how much gymnasts love to code whore their routines for a higher start value :)
You don't know what you're talking about. She was perfectly healthy the whole time she was there. Gutsu replaced her in the AA because of pure politics, the USSR told everyone that Galieva had a knee injury to make it seem like it wasn't a conspiracy. They had to "bring home medals," which I think Galieva was perfectly capable of doing at the time.
@saltlakecity2002 no her difficulty was not there compared to gutsu. She had higher start values at the time otherwise it wouldn't have been a problem...thats why they didn't pull Lysenko either...just had high start values and they were just banking on that...it barely worked lol
she wasn't injured, a few years later, both gutsu and galiyeva talked about what happened, and galiyeva said she was told she was going to have a foot injury so gutsu could compete, and gutsu told her it wasn't her fault, the decision was not hers, it was the coaches. they didn't talk for a long time...don't know about today though
i kinda pity those girls. it wasn't them who decided all those affairs, but ppl are blaming them. also, i don't understand y the judges didn't give her better scores. this routine is quite difficult and artistic in the sense, but its recognition wasn't enough. it should have gave roza more than she had. she deserved the applause and good scores.
@mrflipz she wasn't in the final because she was supposed to be out with a knee injury. (she wasn't) the russians lied and said that so Tatiana Gutsu could compete in the all-around.
agreed. this was THE best floor routine of all the Unified Team during the Optionals. Her difficulty surpassed Bogi and her landings were much better than Chuso and Gutsu. I dont see how she scored lower.
This is one of my favorite routines of all time!! You wouldn't know it to see such a tiny little thing but she was incredibly powerful. I loved her beam routines as well, the later ones a bit more than her 91-92 routines :-)
She was just so fast and powerful! That first tumbling run goes a million miles an hour. My eyes can barely keep up with her...

It's all just speculation 18 years after the fact, but I don't think Roza could have beaten Shannon. Alexandrov knew it, so he made the switch.

Amazing power and perfect execution. I love her compulsory routine too.

She does her double Layouts much better then Gustu who always lunges forward after doing it.

well just to be fair with Gutsu, she always did it with a split which decreased the rotation.

That move she did around 1:12 reminds me of a mechanical mixer, something you'd use to mix cake batter! Cute!

This should have gotten a 10. Far superior to the routine that Milosovici did in EF.

whats the name oft the song? I know that it is russian folk music but what´s the name of it?

The music is "Katyusha". A Russian Soviet wartime song about a girl longing for her beloved, who is away on military service.
