  • free energy :D

  • i bought my drinking bird on ebay a week ago,, and its still drinking the water. it slows down a bit a night when the heating is off, but soon speeds up againg when the room is warmer. amazing. There should be giant drinking birds to power small towns, it would look better to see giant drinking birds than a wind farm.

  • The bird will stop rocking once the water is over....the bird gets energy from the temperature differential caused by awater evaporating from its beak....so in short conservation of energy is not violated---- its taking heat from the air to do work

  • @pithcan Thanks for summing up thermodynamics is such a short space! Much appreciated. :-)

  • @emmfc yeah, in less than 500 characters :)

  • @pithcan lolwut. Learn2thermodynamics

  • @pithcan So we convert the moving energy to electricity???? Do you have a free energy web-site or place to get other ideas....

  • OMG! I had one of these when I was a little girl and I was shattered when it broke :( I didn't even know that it was called a drinking bird until about 10 mins ago when I heard it mentioned on "Hamish and Andy's Reministmas" that's on the TV right now! Oh, the memories! My Mum can't remember it anytime I've asked her where it came from, and there are times that I've wondered whether I imagined the whole thing! But now I know that it really was real! :)

  • @KylieDoak Glad to help! they are also called Dippy Birds and they are still on sale.

  • @emmfc I'm going to have to get one!

  • @KylieDoak and OMG I bet you didn't know you spilled methylene chloride all over yourself when it broke.

  • drinking bird drinks

  • why do engineers not make this concept into a machine that produces mechanical energy? Because it doesnt cost money for the bird to move and produce energy.

  • @renegade3355 because it is about 0.01% efficient.....

  • @renegade3355 if it was that easy, trust me, somebody would be making money off it already...

same thing with cars, you cant put hydrogen in the gas and get 65 mpg.. don't you think toyota would do it if they could? OF COURSE

in short, leave thermodynamics, and chemestry, and physics up to those who know what they are doing

  • @renegade3355 Energy is always transferred - in this case, it requires too much heat for RELATIVELY, too little movement. If the same amount of heat is harnessed directly to move the bird, you might actually see more movement than you do now.

  • @renegade3355 And you, dear sir, have just summed the very essence of crackpots in two sentences. Well done, indeed!

  • what does it look like he's doing hmmm...

  • Hey, I used to have one of these!

  • COOL

  • reminds me of me after a few...

  • @chompmyclit LOL! At least you remember. I hate waking up in another time zone...

  • Every time I see one of these birds I get the idea to build a giant one with gears that operates like a windmill. Renewable energy...solved. Lol, but seriously can someone explain to me why it wouldn't work? I never remember to run it by my Physics professor. I'm sure there is a simple problem with the idea that would prevent it from working, but I just haven't been able to prove to myself that it won't work.

  • @THEx13THxWARRIOR There is indeed a great potential for energy production in the field of thermodynamics - which drives this device. Run it by the physics guys. They will tell you all about it.

    Thanks! Great and timely post!!

  • isi t perpetual motion

  • @philip711videomaster No, thermodynamics - the fluid moves up and down depending upon the temperature influenced by the evaporation of water soaked into the beak. Water and cooling is the "fuel"...

  • I have one with a blue hat, white legs. But thing is, my birds beak picks up too much water, and goes to the bottom bulb and drips on my table, any solutions?

  • @ryanroflcopter First time I have heard of the bird having a drinking problem!

In time, the beak will absorb less and normalize. Till then I suggest a plate underneath it.

  • does it actually drink the water

  • @horsieniven No, the water evaporates from the felt "beak" which soaks it up.

  • Man I used to have these when I was a kid.. These are sick as fuck!!

  • Hunters use these in world of warcraft to dps

  • I think it might have been one of paul Harvey's " The rest of the Story '

  • how does it make the water dissappear?

  • I don't rightly know. It ain't a-commin' out t'other end...

  • @yboben it probably just sits on his nose/beak then drips of onto the table

  • @yboben Every time the bird dips in the water, the head absorbs some of it, and then the water evaporates.

  • replace the Alcohol with liquid Mercury, you will get more torque action.

  • does the water have to be cold or room temperature

  • Either way is fine. I have not experimented with the speed though using iced water. Give it a shot and tell us what happens. I would like to know...

  • it goes on and on and on

  • I had one way back when-Disappeared

  • Where does one find these? I haven't seen one of those in years.

  • Edmund Scientific has them, as well as the small ones that clip to the rim of the glass - just like the originals. They also have upscale versions made of hand blown crystal, if you can believe it!

Let me know how the search goes!

  • I thought I read somewhere that this thing was invented by Eddie albert ?

  • That crops up from time to time but I cannot verify it. See what my life is like? I actually TRIED to verify this!

  • @leland0t0013

You read wrong, since it was patented (patent no. 2402463) by MV Sullican in 1946. Actors are not nearly smart enough to come up with a micro-heat engine.

  • that would be awesome to have a whole room full of drinking birds all dipping there heads in unison, all at the same time,LOL

  • "einstein drinking duck"

  • "Booze did the bird no harm ..." acctualy booze would make the engine process more effective :P

  • Your cup is too high.

  • at first i thought "thats disapointing its stopping already!" then i was wondering why it was so loved... then it happened it dipped a very satisfying and releiving dip. ohhhh right. gigidy

  • I was telling my daughter about these and she though I was nuts.

I knew I could find it on YouTube.

    Thanks!

    K

  • My pleasure. Have you seen my Dippy Bird "Masterpiece"? Then perhaps I will seem nuts... Just search this in the search box: "dippy drinking bird and a plate of bagels"

  • ITS MR HAPPY DRINKING BIRD ! :)

  • ITS DRINKING THE WATER!!!

He's going back for more haha

  • Thanks! Just what I was looking for. I made a reference to the drinking bird and my wife had no clue what I was talking about. I found this video and it all came back to her.

  • Glad to help! My wife thinks I'm nuts for liking this classic toy.

  • this is the most oddest pointless youtube viideos i've everyseen well its just weird

  • Ah, but you have only seen 65 videos, according to your account. But I accept the high praise.

  • visit xump to get a "drinking bird" as seen in this commercial!

  • I could never get mine to work.

  • I have found that the key is the height of the glass of water. That has an effect. Too low or too high and the bird gets very uncooperative!

  • are these neverending, recylce?

  • They drink till the water is gone. By the way, after this I added new feathers.

  • I wrote a report on how these guys work, they're cute xD

  • at least I'll grow up with taste

  • Pff...was expecting it to break the glass or something :(

  • This is a pure classic - Those who don't understand why one would want it - You're a kid, you'll grow up being a social reject at some point too, for the same reason, just a different object.

  • serious then:

what is this for? for scenery I guess. But I think it's ugly -.-

  • wow this is cool. I really need to get one of these I mean: a plastic bird which DRINKS water!!!

    *sarcasm off*

what the hell is the point in this thing?

  • *sarcasm off*

    Philosophy On

Could you be so kind as to tell me what the point is to everything having an instantly recognized point? Does pointlessness have a point? Let's get a dialogue going on this... but then again, what's the point?

  • bravo

  • Some things do not have to have a point.

  • These things have freon in them..

  • bought one yesterday

  • The video description almost makes it sound like you wish to be rid of him. Although i would not expect him to fetch great sum, and he seems like a pleasant fiend to have around.

  • "Fiend?" I like he guy. Sadly, the Funny Store here in NYC just got shut down by a greedy building owner. You could still get these guys there for a mere $7. Check out my video "It's The Funny Store".

  • How long will the drinking bird last with the cup you were using?

  • As long as the water level remains high enough for the bird's beak to get wet, it will continue drinking.

  • OMG!!!!ITS DRINKING THE WATER!!!!

  • i dont understand how it works. how come the red liquid goes up the tube?

  • Thermodynamics. All explained here:

    sci-toys(DOT)com/scitoys/scitoys/thermo/solar_bird/bird.html

  • oh ok thanks

  • my pleasure. In fact, I think I shall remove the little critter from his box and let him drink today. Quite hot here, you know.

  • Ebay

  • Why didn't I think of that! I must be too 20th century for the room... Ebay has a swell assortment of these, including a yellow one sealed in the box. Thanks.

  • fun... i want a drinking bird but i dont know where to get one

  • check out lakeside novelty on the web. Put bird in the searh pane...

  • It's drinking the water!!

Hehehe, he's going back for more.

  • Water? Not Gin?

  • This will be a great way to tort-- I mean interrogate my captures.
