@whackyronu 'always'? no, the weak assed s. vietnamese, no backbone, no guts, asked for help, got it (when they shouldn't have) and proved once and for all to be worthless on the battle field.
the n. vietnamese, believing in the paper army that the corrupt s. vietnamese military brass bragged about, thought they wouldn't be able to conquer s. vietnam until another three years of fighting. they were shocked they rolled over the ARVN in a few months.
@neoconsnightmare3 Yeah, so did North Vietnam. They asked china for troops and military imports. When america left, South Vietnam was left to fight by itself. The north had incoming supplies and soldiers from China and the Soviet Union. The communists knew that they were going to run over south vietnam. They thought it would take the communists only 6 months to fight for the land. But the NVA sent massive wave attacks with soldiers and tanks while south vietnam used m16.
@baberaider18 the nva was just a better army. even when the u.s. was there, by and large the ARVN ran when they saw the NVA/vietcong attack. attacks that the u.s. military and s. korean military were able to beat back.
hell, the nva/it's militia in the north was good...they wound up driving the chinese out in 1979 when china invaded...primarily with militia.
massive wave attacks only work on units that aren't good or out generaled...like the french at dien bien phu.
@neoconsnightmare3 No no no no, you got it all wrong, Xuan Loc was an outstanding battle. So was An Loc. My uncle fought at An Loc where 5,000 ARVN soldiers defended An Loc from 40,000 NVA soldiers and a division of tanks. American Air bombing didnt do any good because NVA had tunnels. Rarely were there any bad ARVN units.
@baberaider18 again, i said individual UNITS were found to be brave. problem is the ARVN as a WHOLE was lousy. corruption, desertion, imaginary soldiers (because many generals got paid a bonus for each soldier in their command).
sorry, but 'rarely' applies to the 'good units' of the ARVN. the viet cong feared the ROC (korean) soldiers, respected the american soldiers fighting ability and usually looked forward to defeating the ARVN.
@neoconsnightmare3 Holy shit, you are so pathetic! The VC/NVA hated the americans and looked at them like they looked at the french. Im viet. My dad was a South Vietnamese officer, and his cousin was a VC officer. His cousin said that the VC sucked at tactics, so they helped the NVA with massive wave attacks. So you can go back to your room, because your mom is waiting. You know nothing about my country's history, so dont talk shit.
@baberaider18 i don't know what jesus' fecal matter has to do with this, but i'm not 'pathetic'.
i disagree with you, plain and simple. i have SEVERAL soldiers/marines that thought piss of the ARVN. you have your uncle's word. who's more self serving?
i didn't say the vc LOVED the americans...please learn something called 'reading comprehension'. i said they respected the americans FIGHTING ABILITY (which means they feared it).
@baberaider18 your dad being a s. vietnamese officer means shit. what's he gonna say: 'yep, we sucked'? c'mon.
i know PLENTY about your country's (former country's) history: the n had the balls and the s didn't. the s. no longer exists because they sucked militarily and the u.s. found out they had NOTHING to gain there.
oh yeah, my wife's family is ethnic chinese and came from northern vietnam. they have no love for the n. vietnamese since they were kicked out.
@neoconsnightmare3 My dad said that even when america left south vietnam, the arvn fought well to try to hold back the communists. I am a native of vietnam. And the marines thought piss of the ARVN was because they thought they had to do more fighting than the ARVN. But truth is, only 58,000 US soldiers died, while 300,000 South Viets died, And 2,000,000 NVA and VC troops died, 600,000 alone, AND 600,000 NVA soldiers died in 1975. Who caused it? NOT USA, BUT ARVN.
the other is 'esprit de corps' which, overall, the ARVN lacked.
certainly they would have made the war last longer (without the us) if they had that spirit.
if the government weren't so corrupt, and the military leaders weren't so corrupt, i venture to say that s. vietnam would be independent today, much like s. korea is.
@neoconsnightmare3 My dad told me that ARVN rarely had any corrupt leaders. Communist leaders today are verrryyyy corrupt, selling the 2 islands of vietnam for money.
@baberaider18 again, YOUR DAD told you this, and he was a soldier/officer in the ARVN. do you THINK that he could POSSIBLY be:
1) self serving;
2) in one of the few DECENT units;
3) both?
sorry, but history doesn't lie...americans i've known...PLENTY...talked about the corruption, lack of motivation and drive, and downright cowardice of the ARVN for the most part.
they said that they've seen individuals and certain units do fine, but OVERALL they were garbage.
@neoconsnightmare3 i dont believe your bullshit. You are probably some of that media shit who complain about fighting wars. Go back to working with that little typewriter of yours.
@baberaider18 your right not to believe the facts, but there they are.
not in the media, but i do believe the u.s. should NOT have been in vietnam, kuwait or iraq either time. in fact, we should have HELPED ho chi minh when he asked for u.s. help and said 'fuck you' to the french.
no, little man, YOU go back to working that little typewriter of yours. i deal in facts and reality...you deal in your fathers lost war. that's pretty fucking pathetic, but it's YOUR problem, not mine.
@neoconsnightmare3 But, if the ARVN werent so outnumbered, and had modern equipment and the spirit to fight, they wouldve won. You have to agree with me on this one. The ARVN lost partly because they had starving families to feed and the North had rice and food coming in from China and Russia. Some deserted to go home and take care of their families
@baberaider18 YES, if they had the SPIRIT the'd have one. they had the numbers (i mean, at least on paper. that goes to the 'spirit), and they had modern equipment (planes, tanks, m16s) , but not, as a MILITARY, the spirit.
i've said that individual units, like the ARVN rangers, HAD the spirit. but not the military as a whole.
the south had food from the americans, and their own food they grew. it wasn't that. those in the north simply BELIEVE 'uncle' ho; the south was ambivalent.
@neoconsnightmare3 arvn didnt haave good numbers. vc.nva recruited boys and all their men to fight. in 1973-1975 arvn had 6 divisions to defend saigon, while vc/nva had 18 divisions to attack saigon.
@baberaider18 that's why i said on paper, the ARVN had a formidible force; in reality, it was a paper army due to the corruption that the leadership had (again, generals and colonels got paid a bonus for every man in their command...when a real man couldnt be found, a mythical man was made up).
it goes back to belief in a cause: the nva/vc believed their cause, the south vietnamese as a whole didn't.
@neoconsnightmare3 Bullshit, the nva and vc didnt have spirit or any of that shit. They made boys fight when the boys didnt even know what they were fighting for. You stupid head shit. Your not even vietnamese, and you know shit about the ARVN.
@baberaider18 you're reacting emotionally, not rationally.
YES, the vc and nva had PLENTY of spirit...most really BELIEVED that communist bullshit. they bought into the 'we've been fighting invaders for a thousand years, starting with the chinese' (which is actually fact).
the viet minh started in world war 2, feeding the peasants and fighting the japanese and french. just like in china, the commies worked with the villagers while the nationalists had contempt for them.
@neoconsnightmare3 America backed off not because the war wasnt worth, it was because they didnt want a big fight with China and Russia. They signed a contract that China had control of Southeast Asia and they had control of the middle east. So they backed off. You should really think about learning about your country more than learning about mine. And my war knowledge mostly comes for books that were mostly written by AMERICAN VETS.

@baberaider18 you're allegedly vietnamese, and the only thing YOU know about the ARVN is what your dad told you.
again, MAYBE he was a good soldier; MAYBE his unit was a great unit. facts are facts...most ARVN units and soldiers and leaders were worth shit. ask ANY american soldier/marine that was in that country (you haven't, i have talked with at least 100 in my various units). outside of ARVN rangers and s. vietnamese marines (both get high marks from u.s. vets) the rest were shit.
@neoconsnightmare3 Ive been to military reunions where there were both US and South Vietnamese soldiers. I asked some US troops what they thought about the ARVN troops, ALL of them said that the ARVN did their job and we shouldnt have backed off. And you are WAYYY to biased.
@baberaider18 sure, NOW you're saying you've been around u.s. soldiers. i keep saying (and you seem to ignore) that:
1) there were individual soldiers/officers/units that were great, BUT;
2) the vast majority of ARVN soldiers/officers/units were shit.
this is what EVERY SINGLE SOLDIER who went to vietnam i know said. i knew these men PROFESSIONALLY (not as some ARVN guy's son). they had little good to say about ARVN. when they did, they let you KNOW the 'good' was an exception.
@baberaider18 why would i be 'biased'? my wife's family was kicked out of northern vietnam in 1979. neither they nor i have love for the north vietnamese.
but history shows the n. vietnamese played their cards right. they got on the side of the peasants. they played the chinese and russians well (and then kicked the chinese out, like my wife's family, when china tried to invade vietnam).
i have nothing against the ARVN. they just, AS A WHOLE, weren't any good.
@baberaider18 amazing, each and every soldier/officer who i knew that served in vietnam (professor of military science, the one master sergeant in the 173rd airborne, all but ONE of my drill sergeants in infantry basic training, guys in my units, etc.) said:
1) ARVN SUCKED for the most part;
2) a few good soldiers/officers/units;
3) the ROK (republic of korea or s. koreans) were EXCELLENT soldiers. in fact, they said the ROK soldiers did a better job of clearing a village than americans.
they said that koreans scared the SHIT out of vc and n vietnamese. koreans were vicious and thorough fighters. amazingly, during the korean war, s koreans learned how to fight, and showed the spirit of wanting to be free of the north. this is why the ROK soldiers were there as long as the americans.
in fact, they had the second highest number of troops behind the u.s.
why would u.s. soldiers praise ROK soldiers and dog out ARVN? because it was FACT, that's why.
@neoconsnightmare3 NoonONOno, The first best fighting force was America, Then China, then Russia, Then ARVN! Yes, the ROK were good soldiers, I agree with you, but during MANY MANY MANY battles, the ARVN had great spirit and were ready to fight. Like at An Loc, the ARVN withstood 5 massive human and tank wave attacks when they had only 5,000 men. It was the Airborne and Army there, and my uncle was there too.
@baberaider18 i'm not ranking 'best fighters'. i'm talking about the order in which the vietnamese fought outsiders. china dominated vietnam (annam, tonkin, etc.) for 1,000 years. then came the french. then came chinese influence (competing with russian influence), then the americans.
you can keep claiming the ARVN had great spirit, but overall they didn't. i've said repeatedly that certain units, the rangers and marines DID have the spirt. there were individual officers/soldiers that did.
@neoconsnightmare3 Your 100% wrong. The majority of the Army had good spirit. Why do you think it took the NVA and VC 40 days to TRY to overun a small force of arvn? Because, the arvn knew they were fighting to keep Vietnam free. Its not just the Rangers and the Marines, its the overall military of South Vietnam that had spirit. Dont think your smarter than me just because your a 50 year old pedophile. I would whoop your ass anytime.
@baberaider18 from a 'INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM --THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARMY TODAY' (the title was in all caps), 1966:
The inclusion of major ARVN elements in the planning and execution of combined operations with American forces has, to some degree, improved the morale and aggressiveness of certain ARVN units,two of the three divisions based in the western half of III Corps.
In much of the rest of the country, however, ARVN combat performance has been generally unsatisfactory or, at best, marginal, with the result that US and third-countryhave been required to counter major Communist thrusts in most critical areas.
@neoconsnightmare3 Yeah south vietnam had an inexperienced army back then. but only until around 1968, did the military do better. The ARVN still wanted their country to be free. If you had to choose whether to be an ARVN soldier or NVA soldier, which would you be?
@baberaider18 since i wasn't living back then, it's hard to tell.
if i was living in the north, i'd be more likely to want to be in the nva.
if i was living in the south, i could just as easily been a member of the vc, the ARVN or not wanting to be a part of any group.
if the "ARVN", if i was connected with the government, i could be a very corrupted officer; if not, i may be a dedicated officer or soldier, fighting to the end.
@neoconsnightmare3 I have never wanted anything bad for my country, and i know corruption is something bad. So i would go with the ARVN and be a good leader. Even if i dont get paid, I would do my job well for the good of the country.
@baberaider18 you're saying that as a person of vietnamese descent, who likely wasn't even born during the war; certainly, you didn't grow up there at the age where you'd have to make that decision.
this is NOT a put down of you, but an acknowledgement of what conditions you live in versus what conditions your dad lived in. your dad went the route of fighting for his country because he grew up in different circumstances than you, and was man enough to make the 'right' decision. others didn't.
@neoconsnightmare3 I get you. And your right. But I know that communism will never be the right track. When the ARVN fought the NVA, the NVA fought not for north vietnam, but for the whole communist party.
@baberaider18 that's all i'm saying. and history shows that communism was a failure (great idea in theory, but 'theory' leaves out the human element which screwed it up). vietnam now is pretty much communist in name only (still lacking freedom of speech, etc, but now aggressively capitalistic).
remember, though, ho chi minh asked for u.s. help after world war 2, and even had a 'declaration of independence' like the u.s. france said if the u.s helped, they'd not join nato. truman was stuck.
@baberaider18 as one lady said in an article i found online (vietnamese woman): if the americans were paying the bill, and were such 'know it alls' why shouldn't we let them go out and do the fighting.
but the mistrust came from the american soldier/lower ranking officer not being let in on everything; the u.s. government killed /orchestrated the killings of s.vietnamese presidents (who were often pretty useless anyway).
@baberaider18 ironically, out of NECESSITY, they did do a great job (given the circumstances) as fewer americans were there to do the fighting and when the americans left.
why? because at THAT POINT they knew the communists would come in and do a clean sweep, kill leaders and send others to concentration camps. amazing what the human spirit can do when faced with a choice: fight as hard as you can OR suffer.
i'm NOT being mean to the ARVN, but they gave too little too late.
@baberaider18 i've also read that, as i stated before, MANY ARVN soldiers/leaders were great, fantastic.
also, most american soldiers dealt with militia ('puff puffs') not regular ARVN. however, what I gave you was an intelligence memorandum dated 12/12/ 1966.
when the u.s better supplied the ARVN, their morale overall DID rise; however, most u.s. soldiers, even those that worked with regular ARVN troops, simply didn't think of them being overall good, only 'certain units'.
@baberaider18 about families...many vietcong and all n. vietnamese had family in the north; many fought the japanese, the french and then the u.s./ARVN. they were often gone for years at a time.
but they BELIEVED in their cause...the s. vietnamese as a whole didn't
the u.s. won the battles, but they lost the war because most americans simply didn't BELIEVE the war was important enough to keep sending american soldiers off to die/get injured; to spend their tax dollars on.

@baberaider18 my Uncal he didn't fight in the war he was an aircraft mechanic for the air force of south vietnam. My grandpa did on the side for the south
@saigonboi26 My dad was in the South Vietnamese navy and my other uncles were in the marines and army. my dads older brother fought in the famous an loc battle.
@saigonboi26 Ok lol. can you help me to fight against this communist dude. on one of the videos called 5-5 Vietnam War 1965-1975. I believe it said that.
@saigonboi26 Its a spring but you can go on amazon and buy it. Look at one of my videos on youtube. its the Well M16a1 Overview. In the description i have the link to go buy it. if it doesnt work tell me.
@saigonboi26 I am 13. I always wished i was born back then and couldve fought for the South Vietnamese. Even if i knew we would lose, i would still fight.
To all those fecking Vietcong, you fight for nothing....you make alot people suffer and die for nothing.... Now you all want to come here and have a piece of paper that was call " GREEN CARD"....feck you all VC....shame on you !!!!!
Who's this reporter and his cameraman? I've seen them on several old clips from Vietnam, and they seem to be quite brave and cool-headed... They always deliver intense and relatively clear images from battles
That is real war scene without backgrown musica only the war sound ,and with real people ,not like the hollywood public version that make look even a bloody war the coolest thing in the war. scenes like this make people think.
I wonder what would be happened to the young Marine Lt. who was wounded on his left abdoment in the battle... Did he kill himself at the end of the fight, or be killed by the VC, or died lonely few days later somewhere as the result of his unattended wound, or he survived and spent few years in VC labor camp, or soon died there? Anybody could tell me about his faith...
I can see the South Vietnamese soldiers were fighting bravely for their country. However, soon they all lost their battles, their lives, their freedoms, and their country to the VC! How could they fight the VC tanks and artilleries with their M16s and hand grenades? The U.S. had decided to shake hand with the Chinese communists and then withdrew all of it supports to the South Vietnamese Government, while the VC still had all the helps from the USSR and the Chinese... SOB!
@poquannguyen Yeah i know, I am south vietnamese too. my dad was an officer in the navy, my uncle fought at an loc, and my other uncle fought at quang tri, yet we won most of the battles without tanks. we had LAW
remember guys this way isn't a normal civil war like what the americans have face it's more likely the US supported south VN while the north has china and USSR which at that time they are Anti-AMerican.
@accordandy007 No Vietnam only accepted help from USSR not from China cos China support ended in 1961 due to Sino-Soviet Split, Vietnam chose USSR instead China, except that, the rest is true
you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.....check your source again....what did LE DUAN said after 1975 ?....did he said that the North fight the war for the Chinese and the USSR, but not for Viet Nam ?
Thanks to the FUCKING AMERICAN who started the fucking WAR and forcing the south vietnam president to sign the fucking treaty in paris in term it lead to this betrayal... FUCK AMerican for leaving us behide.
@accordandy007 nice whine/bitch/moan, but the s. vietnamese president were weak asses; the s. vietnamese military was corrupt as hell and led by friends of the 'bum of the month' who was president.
fact is...the s. vietnamese were for the most part weak. no amount of american/australian/s.korean help would have worked.
contrast this to s.korea, where the people had a spine and fought alongside the americans/un. they didn't want to be part of n. korea and FOUGHT LIKE HELL to be independent.
Awful business. Just shows that the Viet Cong were able to be defeated and should have been. History has shown that the Americans were winning but public opinion poorly fuelled by the media and so called do-gooders made the eventual situation so tragic that in the light of present conflicts one wonders if anyone has learned anything.
What is the definition of a puppet? Is it a country that has common interests and values in a neighborhood where others don't? Or is it a corrupt ruler, doing the bidding of a foreign power, to the detriment of that nation's own citizenry? Add to this the compounding factor of educated ideologues on both sides waging war for the minds of an undereducated, if not illiterate peasantry.
Will the Afghan National Army fight like these men? I think not. If not, that ought to put to bed the idea that ARVN troops did not fight and that the concept of a South Vietnam, however politically flawed, was nothing more than a puppet state of the Western imperialists. The intelligentsia on both sides waged their ideological war, with poor and iliterate peasants caught in between.

When will the world wake up and realise that there is no such thing as "democracy" and "communism" all just nothing but idealogies. When will small nations wake up and stop being pawns to bigger nations' interests! These Vichocos making videos claiming Vietnam was beautiful before 1975? Its was ! Before the fucking hairy white mother fuckers bombed the shit out of it. Fucking traitors that kills their own people and play the puppets for foreigners ,all deserves death.

Prosperity only exists in big cities in Vietnam like Hanoi and Saigon, but 80% of Vietnamese population live in poor, underdeveloped rural areas. While corrupt communist leaders like Prime minister Nguyen tan Dung and President Nguyen minh Triet are multi-billionaires, a regular Vietnamese earns only $1 per day. More than 200,000 Vietnamese women from poor families, many as young as ten, are working as prostitutes and sex slaves in China, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Korea.
Ho chi Minh, Vietnam's communist leader, is a disguting TRAITOR & MURDERER! In exchange for chinese military aids in the war with France (1945-1954), he gave up Paracel & Spratly archipelagos which are very rich in oil kresources to China. He even ordered to murder his own mistress named Nong thi Xuan when she threatened to disclose her sexual relationship with him since that would destroy his image as a "Father" of Vietnam who "sacrifices" his whole life for Vietnam revolution.
It was a terrible war. It's exact what we faced every day before. Vietnamese killed Vietnamese. Americans killed Vietnamese. I was in the war fighting for the South. I am glad to get out with intact body but traumatized mind. Never have a chance to go back VN in 30 years. I do not want to see the past would go back to haunt me. Good bye my young age full of nightmare. Lot of young guys in this video never had a chance to grow old.
We all know that the GREAT VIETNAMESE taught us BARBARIC AMERICAN INVADERS a LESSON!!!
I am so sorry for my children, they are too dumb to realize that we CAN'T defeat the GREAT VIETNAM. The GREAT VIETNAMESE kicked our BASTARD ass. We lost, that's all.
Horseshit. Barbaric? This is from a guy who lives in a land that routinely eats dogs and cats. great vietnamese? What's that? A Saint Bernard on a bun??
We all know that the GREAT VIETNAMESE are the MOTHER of all EASTERN CIVILIZATIONS. When you love a chinese girl, you must thank the GREAT VIETNAMESE (Shennong) who civilized the ancient barbaric chinese. Vietnamese created I-ching, turte calendar, magic crossbow, cannon...Vietnamese rebuilt Beijing..
They kicked the bastard ass then. They stopped the worst genocide and repelled a Chinese invasion just in 2 years. They've become a free market economy since 1986 and raising at the high rate.
And their civilians are not being eaten "freedom" and "democracy" from US air force every day like some "democratic" countries such as Iraq and Afganishtan. ^_^

@whackyronu 'always'? no, the weak assed s. vietnamese, no backbone, no guts, asked for help, got it (when they shouldn't have) and proved once and for all to be worthless on the battle field.

i know PLENTY about your country's (former country's) history: the n had the balls and the s didn't. the s. no longer exists because they sucked militarily and the u.s. found out they had NOTHING to gain there.
oh yeah, my wife's family is ethnic chinese and came from northern vietnam. they have no love for the n. vietnamese since they were kicked out.
try again, dipshit.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 My dad said that even when america left south vietnam, the arvn fought well to try to hold back the communists. I am a native of vietnam. And the marines thought piss of the ARVN was because they thought they had to do more fighting than the ARVN. But truth is, only 58,000 US soldiers died, while 300,000 South Viets died, And 2,000,000 NVA and VC troops died, 600,000 alone, AND 600,000 NVA soldiers died in 1975. Who caused it? NOT USA, BUT ARVN.
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 i didn't say they didn't fight well. they fought DESPERATELY well. but they still were a paper army.
they had no replacement material for the planes/helicopters/tanks, and even had to ration gasoline.
why? because they didn't prove to the u.s. that EXTRA money and materiel would produce a win. it's that easy.
why? because they REPEATEDLY, as a whole (not as individual brave units) were simply lousy.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 So they would fight better if they were supplied.
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 well, that's one aspect.
the other is 'esprit de corps' which, overall, the ARVN lacked.
certainly they would have made the war last longer (without the us) if they had that spirit.
if the government weren't so corrupt, and the military leaders weren't so corrupt, i venture to say that s. vietnam would be independent today, much like s. korea is.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 My dad told me that ARVN rarely had any corrupt leaders. Communist leaders today are verrryyyy corrupt, selling the 2 islands of vietnam for money.
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 again, YOUR DAD told you this, and he was a soldier/officer in the ARVN. do you THINK that he could POSSIBLY be:
1) self serving;
2) in one of the few DECENT units;
3) both?
sorry, but history doesn't lie...americans i've known...PLENTY...talked about the corruption, lack of motivation and drive, and downright cowardice of the ARVN for the most part.
they said that they've seen individuals and certain units do fine, but OVERALL they were garbage.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 i dont believe your bullshit. You are probably some of that media shit who complain about fighting wars. Go back to working with that little typewriter of yours.
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 your right not to believe the facts, but there they are.
not in the media, but i do believe the u.s. should NOT have been in vietnam, kuwait or iraq either time. in fact, we should have HELPED ho chi minh when he asked for u.s. help and said 'fuck you' to the french.
no, little man, YOU go back to working that little typewriter of yours. i deal in facts and reality...you deal in your fathers lost war. that's pretty fucking pathetic, but it's YOUR problem, not mine.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 Hahah and your not? What you are saying is false. If you go ask more veterans, they would said ARVN fought like tigers.
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 far from being self serving. i wasn't in vietnam. i was in chicago and 10 years old when the ARVN and s. vietnam were defeated.
i spoke with SCORES of vietnam vets, officers and enlisted, and TO A MAN they said this:
1) the viet cong were tough and they respected them;
2) the north vietnamese were a great professional army, and they respected them;
3) the s. koreans were FEARED by the NVA and viet song;
4) with FEW exceptions (like ARVN rangers) the ARVN was weak/corrupt/bad.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 But, if the ARVN werent so outnumbered, and had modern equipment and the spirit to fight, they wouldve won. You have to agree with me on this one. The ARVN lost partly because they had starving families to feed and the North had rice and food coming in from China and Russia. Some deserted to go home and take care of their families
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 YES, if they had the SPIRIT the'd have one. they had the numbers (i mean, at least on paper. that goes to the 'spirit), and they had modern equipment (planes, tanks, m16s) , but not, as a MILITARY, the spirit.
i've said that individual units, like the ARVN rangers, HAD the spirit. but not the military as a whole.
the south had food from the americans, and their own food they grew. it wasn't that. those in the north simply BELIEVE 'uncle' ho; the south was ambivalent.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 arvn didnt haave good numbers. vc.nva recruited boys and all their men to fight. in 1973-1975 arvn had 6 divisions to defend saigon, while vc/nva had 18 divisions to attack saigon.
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 that's why i said on paper, the ARVN had a formidible force; in reality, it was a paper army due to the corruption that the leadership had (again, generals and colonels got paid a bonus for every man in their command...when a real man couldnt be found, a mythical man was made up).
it goes back to belief in a cause: the nva/vc believed their cause, the south vietnamese as a whole didn't.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 Bullshit, the nva and vc didnt have spirit or any of that shit. They made boys fight when the boys didnt even know what they were fighting for. You stupid head shit. Your not even vietnamese, and you know shit about the ARVN.
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 you're reacting emotionally, not rationally.
YES, the vc and nva had PLENTY of spirit...most really BELIEVED that communist bullshit. they bought into the 'we've been fighting invaders for a thousand years, starting with the chinese' (which is actually fact).
the viet minh started in world war 2, feeding the peasants and fighting the japanese and french. just like in china, the commies worked with the villagers while the nationalists had contempt for them.
time to face facts.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 America backed off not because the war wasnt worth, it was because they didnt want a big fight with China and Russia. They signed a contract that China had control of Southeast Asia and they had control of the middle east. So they backed off. You should really think about learning about your country more than learning about mine. And my war knowledge mostly comes for books that were mostly written by AMERICAN VETS.

@baberaider18 you're allegedly vietnamese, and the only thing YOU know about the ARVN is what your dad told you.
again, MAYBE he was a good soldier; MAYBE his unit was a great unit. facts are facts...most ARVN units and soldiers and leaders were worth shit. ask ANY american soldier/marine that was in that country (you haven't, i have talked with at least 100 in my various units). outside of ARVN rangers and s. vietnamese marines (both get high marks from u.s. vets) the rest were shit.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 Ive been to military reunions where there were both US and South Vietnamese soldiers. I asked some US troops what they thought about the ARVN troops, ALL of them said that the ARVN did their job and we shouldnt have backed off. And you are WAYYY to biased.
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 sure, NOW you're saying you've been around u.s. soldiers. i keep saying (and you seem to ignore) that:
1) there were individual soldiers/officers/units that were great, BUT;
2) the vast majority of ARVN soldiers/officers/units were shit.
this is what EVERY SINGLE SOLDIER who went to vietnam i know said. i knew these men PROFESSIONALLY (not as some ARVN guy's son). they had little good to say about ARVN. when they did, they let you KNOW the 'good' was an exception.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 why would i be 'biased'? my wife's family was kicked out of northern vietnam in 1979. neither they nor i have love for the north vietnamese.
but history shows the n. vietnamese played their cards right. they got on the side of the peasants. they played the chinese and russians well (and then kicked the chinese out, like my wife's family, when china tried to invade vietnam).
i have nothing against the ARVN. they just, AS A WHOLE, weren't any good.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 amazing, each and every soldier/officer who i knew that served in vietnam (professor of military science, the one master sergeant in the 173rd airborne, all but ONE of my drill sergeants in infantry basic training, guys in my units, etc.) said:
1) ARVN SUCKED for the most part;
2) a few good soldiers/officers/units;
3) the ROK (republic of korea or s. koreans) were EXCELLENT soldiers. in fact, they said the ROK soldiers did a better job of clearing a village than americans.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 3 cont:
they said that koreans scared the SHIT out of vc and n vietnamese. koreans were vicious and thorough fighters. amazingly, during the korean war, s koreans learned how to fight, and showed the spirit of wanting to be free of the north. this is why the ROK soldiers were there as long as the americans.
in fact, they had the second highest number of troops behind the u.s.
why would u.s. soldiers praise ROK soldiers and dog out ARVN? because it was FACT, that's why.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 NoonONOno, The first best fighting force was America, Then China, then Russia, Then ARVN! Yes, the ROK were good soldiers, I agree with you, but during MANY MANY MANY battles, the ARVN had great spirit and were ready to fight. Like at An Loc, the ARVN withstood 5 massive human and tank wave attacks when they had only 5,000 men. It was the Airborne and Army there, and my uncle was there too.
baberaider18 3 weeks ago
@baberaider18 i'm not ranking 'best fighters'. i'm talking about the order in which the vietnamese fought outsiders. china dominated vietnam (annam, tonkin, etc.) for 1,000 years. then came the french. then came chinese influence (competing with russian influence), then the americans.
you can keep claiming the ARVN had great spirit, but overall they didn't. i've said repeatedly that certain units, the rangers and marines DID have the spirt. there were individual officers/soldiers that did.
neoconsnightmare3 3 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 Your 100% wrong. The majority of the Army had good spirit. Why do you think it took the NVA and VC 40 days to TRY to overun a small force of arvn? Because, the arvn knew they were fighting to keep Vietnam free. Its not just the Rangers and the Marines, its the overall military of South Vietnam that had spirit. Dont think your smarter than me just because your a 50 year old pedophile. I would whoop your ass anytime.
baberaider18 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 from a 'INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM --THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARMY TODAY' (the title was in all caps), 1966:
The inclusion of major ARVN elements in the planning and execution of combined operations with American forces has, to some degree, improved the morale and aggressiveness of certain ARVN units,two of the three divisions based in the western half of III Corps.
continuted
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 INTELLIGENCE REPORT cont:
In much of the rest of the country, however, ARVN combat performance has been generally unsatisfactory or, at best, marginal, with the result that US and third-countryhave been required to counter major Communist thrusts in most critical areas.
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 No. If America did all of the fighting, then why did 300,000 ARVN soldiers die? And only 58,000 American?
baberaider18 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 never said america did all the fighting. in fact, 58,000 americans died versus 224,000 ARVN.
overall the ARVN sucked, and for a variety of reasons:
1) americans didn't trust them;
2) gave them bullshit equipment for a couple of years;
3) those in the south simply weren't at the fighting game as long as those in the north (chinese aid as early as 1949);
4) those in the north really BELIEVED in their mission; the south, not as much;
5) corruption of officers/government
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 Yeah south vietnam had an inexperienced army back then. but only until around 1968, did the military do better. The ARVN still wanted their country to be free. If you had to choose whether to be an ARVN soldier or NVA soldier, which would you be?
baberaider18 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 you're asking a rhetorical question based on events that happened 37 years ago.
with that in mind, i'd say an NVA for one reason...they won.
wouldn't want to be vc because they were destroyed for the most part during the tet offensive.
again, the nva drank more of the kool-aid than the ARVN. this is why their morale was generally higher than that of the ARVN.
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 But if you didnt know the result of the war back then, than which side would you be on?
baberaider18 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 since i wasn't living back then, it's hard to tell.
if i was living in the north, i'd be more likely to want to be in the nva.
if i was living in the south, i could just as easily been a member of the vc, the ARVN or not wanting to be a part of any group.
if the "ARVN", if i was connected with the government, i could be a very corrupted officer; if not, i may be a dedicated officer or soldier, fighting to the end.
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 I have never wanted anything bad for my country, and i know corruption is something bad. So i would go with the ARVN and be a good leader. Even if i dont get paid, I would do my job well for the good of the country.
baberaider18 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 you're saying that as a person of vietnamese descent, who likely wasn't even born during the war; certainly, you didn't grow up there at the age where you'd have to make that decision.
this is NOT a put down of you, but an acknowledgement of what conditions you live in versus what conditions your dad lived in. your dad went the route of fighting for his country because he grew up in different circumstances than you, and was man enough to make the 'right' decision. others didn't.
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@neoconsnightmare3 I get you. And your right. But I know that communism will never be the right track. When the ARVN fought the NVA, the NVA fought not for north vietnam, but for the whole communist party.
baberaider18 2 weeks ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@baberaider18 that's all i'm saying. and history shows that communism was a failure (great idea in theory, but 'theory' leaves out the human element which screwed it up). vietnam now is pretty much communist in name only (still lacking freedom of speech, etc, but now aggressively capitalistic).
remember, though, ho chi minh asked for u.s. help after world war 2, and even had a 'declaration of independence' like the u.s. france said if the u.s helped, they'd not join nato. truman was stuck.
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 as one lady said in an article i found online (vietnamese woman): if the americans were paying the bill, and were such 'know it alls' why shouldn't we let them go out and do the fighting.
but the mistrust came from the american soldier/lower ranking officer not being let in on everything; the u.s. government killed /orchestrated the killings of s.vietnamese presidents (who were often pretty useless anyway).
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 ironically, out of NECESSITY, they did do a great job (given the circumstances) as fewer americans were there to do the fighting and when the americans left.
why? because at THAT POINT they knew the communists would come in and do a clean sweep, kill leaders and send others to concentration camps. amazing what the human spirit can do when faced with a choice: fight as hard as you can OR suffer.
i'm NOT being mean to the ARVN, but they gave too little too late.
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 i've also read that, as i stated before, MANY ARVN soldiers/leaders were great, fantastic.
also, most american soldiers dealt with militia ('puff puffs') not regular ARVN. however, what I gave you was an intelligence memorandum dated 12/12/ 1966.
when the u.s better supplied the ARVN, their morale overall DID rise; however, most u.s. soldiers, even those that worked with regular ARVN troops, simply didn't think of them being overall good, only 'certain units'.
neoconsnightmare3 2 weeks ago
@baberaider18 about families...many vietcong and all n. vietnamese had family in the north; many fought the japanese, the french and then the u.s./ARVN. they were often gone for years at a time.
but they BELIEVED in their cause...the s. vietnamese as a whole didn't
the u.s. won the battles, but they lost the war because most americans simply didn't BELIEVE the war was important enough to keep sending american soldiers off to die/get injured; to spend their tax dollars on.

I can see the South Vietnamese soldiers were fighting bravely for their country. However, soon they all lost their battles, their lives, their freedoms, and their country to the VC! How could they fight the VC tanks and artilleries with their M16s and hand grenades? The U.S. had decided to shake hand with the Chinese communists and then withdrew all of it supports to the South Vietnamese Government, while the VC still had all the helps from the USSR and the Chinese... fact is...the s. vietnamese were for the most part weak. no amount of american/australian/s.korean help would have worked.
contrast this to s.korea, where the people had a spine and fought alongside the americans/un. they didn't want to be part of n. korea and FOUGHT LIKE HELL to be independent.

Awful business. Just shows that the Viet Cong were able to be defeated and should have been.

Ladies and gentlemen!

For short: Vietnamese = Greek of Asia.
You are welcome! ^_^

Very good sss and like ancient Greece we have to acknowledge their contribtions. But like Greece, what have they done lately?
wildweasel68 2 years ago 2
They kicked the bastard ass then. They stopped the worst genocide and repelled a Chinese invasion just in 2 years. They've become a free market economy since 1986 and raising at the high rate.
And their civilians are not being eaten "freedom" and "democracy" from US air force every day like some "democratic" countries such as Iraq and Afganishtan. ^_^
