One huge thing, in my opinion, is that younger people (ie my generation and younger) can grow up with the Beatles by just working their way through the discography. When I was a kid, I was scared to touch anything beyond Rubber Soul. Now, of course, I listen to all of it. In other words, they have something for everyone and for every stage of development.
The core factor is the music; and, by that, I mean the quality of the songwriting. Without the great melodies and the catchy tunes, nothing else really matters. To discuss the Beatles in terms of their wit, their hair, or their musicianship is a limited discussion. They would players on the big stage of the 1960s nonetheless; but, they would not be the enduring "Gods" as they are now. It is the songwriting...and, all of those cover versions. People are compelled to recreate and listen.

The Stones can't touch The Beatles, honey. Not gritty? Have you heard Helter Skelter? Yer Blues? Get educated...or get a new set of ears.
