Because they were the only bands capable of innovating a stagnating scene. Tool themselves brought Meshuggah on tour with them. You can taste Meshuggah's heavy influence in lots of bands like Textures, Threat Signal, Gojira, Periphery, Sikth, Obsidian, Mnemic, Tesseract.......Some songs of these bands could even be considered (bad) clones of Meshuggah.
