chevy parts are cheap, so many parts have to be changed when adding horsepower to them. this is the reason behind alot of "technology" out there for them, everyone who wanted chev hp had to find and make ways. but even though im mopar to the bone i have to say chevys can produce decent numbers. the Mopar's however were ahead of there time & came out with all this glorious technology 50+ years ago. & thats what you paid for an still do. during ww2 we built trucks, aircrafts, rockets & missiles :)
Hey man Im planning on adding a turbo on my 273 V8 and was wondering if you could give me any tips as Ive never really dealt in turbos before. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.
the bottom line is this, a decent built bottom end, combined with boost and the correct air/fuel ratio will make some serious go. Take a stock 318 and the right air/ fuel delivery and it will make 400 hp and run all day long. Look at the Chevy 4.8 they boosted in the magazine running insane boost on a stock bottom end. Can't remember the hp but it was quite a bit. Forged pistons and a good set of rods will likely hold up to about 500 whp on just about any v8. Tuning is the Key!
Chevy - like people who voted Obama, we know your out there, we know you outnumber us, but you dont think before you make decisions you just go with the bandwagon. MOPAR is mo powr
How much HP can the 318 have before it will broke? i have a 318 borred to 323, low comp pistons. how much hp can i have with a turbo? sorry for my bad english :(
@busotactico I have found that the Chevy 350 is pretty durable when doing upgrades.. I had a couple 318's go south when trying to get some extra horses.. 350 is a tough engine to beat bro.. I've had some of the best engine builders tell me that
@sonofthesheriff Lol well most of those engine builders are Brand loyal to death. While I am brand loyal mostly to Mopar the 340 mopar is really the way to go. The 350 is cheap but back in the 60's it wasnt the engine to go with to make power.
@busotactico For durability theyre about equal, the 318 poly is better for performance then the 350 however the normal 318 is not as good as the 350 when it comes to performance. The main reason is the amount of research and after market performance parts available for the 350.
@Boredout454 kinda but the poly is very difficult to find parts for, and very few performance parts were made for it. belive me i no i have a 318 poly, the normal 318 would demolish the poly.
And as far as even talking about the worlds shittiest engine, only reason people think it is powerful is cause its cheap. Which is where the term "you get what you pay for" comes in :)
@busotactico your comparing some off sizee of engines...wouldnt it be better to compare chevy 350 with dodge 360? or the older 340? theres quite a ci difference there...
@the124Lscania Dude, do even know anything about Mopars. Stock heads on 318's are shit. This is great horsepower increase over the factor 230bhp. That's RWP, big difference. Nice Dart.
Wicked! Love the sound (even though camera doesn't really capture it well, we get the idea)... some great work and even when it's idling, that car just sounds MEAN! I've had 4 Darts (among other Mopars), only one with the 318, and I gotta say this one is BAD.
It's blow through, carbureted, 650 Holley Double Pumper with only a couple mods. Mainly the milled choke horn, epoxied the choke opening, solid floats, jet extensions, and jetting up. It doesn't take anything trick to make 500 horsepower or so in my opinion, once you start making 600 or more usually more work is entailed.
@topfueldart my friend, are the pistons and the rods changed for any other model or forged ones?i´m asking because i want to put a hx40 with 60mm compressor wheel and 64mm turbine in my 97 grand cherokee with 318 magnum engine. How much horses can i make in gas pump and what was the ignition timing at top rpm/wot?14?18?
hey, i just sold my turbo civic and bought a 97 ram with the 318. i might consider doing a turbo setup on my ram for the future.
what type of engine management did you use? and what is the typical safety limit of hp of the stock connecting rods? im assuming you used forged internals? im very familiar with doing a home-made turbo setup since mine was. sorry for the dumb questions but i appreciate anything you can answer.
