The stage really lacks something without Jackie :( Why did they even bother making Joan switch to bass for this preformance, anyway? Couldn't they have just let Joan play her usual guitar, and leave out the bass parts?
@cheriecurriefan true, but it was better this way. you should see the documentary of them, the runaways almost killed her. she actually got to the point where she had a broken bottle in her hands and she was cutting her arm
Jackie left the band at the end of the Japanese tour in June 1977 when her 1965 Gibson Thunderbird bass(a very rare, beautiful bass even in 1977) broke and she realized it hadn't been insured and that nobody was taking care of the band. Also, their managers set them against eachother so they were constantly fighting and competing for the spotlight. There were rumors that she attempted suicide but it's not true, she cut her arm accidentally with a bottle after theincident with her bass.
@xEmoxNicolex According to "Edgeplay", the cutting wasn't accidental. She wasn't trying to kill herself, but she did snap, break a bunch of bottles, and slice up her arm.
@dreadbet Her bass broke, well, the neck snapped and she just quit. In the movie Edgeplay she said it was one of the hardest things she has done in her life
It does sound empty without the rhythm guitar, but I think it would have sounded weird without bass, too. They probably tested it both ways and went with what they thought sounded better. Joan's actually rocking that bass. Obviously something she fiddled with more than she lets on when asked about playing other instruments.
Song didn't sound *that* bad, but yeah, I think Joan should've just stuck with rhythm, and just have no bass. But maybe it sounded bad, who knows. This was a bit sad to watch, knowing what happened with Jackie and everything. Sucks that it went down that way..
@suzylux you certainly miss Joan's rythum guitar here..that's for sure. They all look a little "down' in this perforamcne after Jackie left but the show must go on!! LOVE THIS BAND - read the book Neon Angels!!
@xFANPiREbabex it wasn't really the same day, I think that happened a few days before this. From what I understand, Jackie wasn't trying to kill herself, she was just so upset she was taking out all of her anger, frustration, homesickness, etc out on herself. She kind of lost her mind for a day or so.
@xFANPiREbabex Which is really sad. My heart really went out to Sandy when she was in tears wanting the band to reunite. Now this can never happen. R.I.P. Sandy
That must have been devastating to lose Jackie while being literally on the other side of the world; especially when their careers were taking off. Under the circumstances, they really pulled off a good performance here. I wish Jackie could have lasted until they got back to the U.S. and had a chance to thing things thru and regroup. In my opinion, Jackie leaving the band was the initial, slow demise of the group.
they didnt had a chance to relax and think..I dont think jackie wanted that but cherie wanted to go back a lot but she couldnt do it because they were already on tour and have recorded the new album... things were really fast and when she finally felt better it was too late..
Rodney Bingenheimer used to play a version of this by some Japanese girl band and the only Englis words they got right was "All right you guys." Everything else was mangled.
Cool to see the video. I think for the remainder of the Japan tour they should have just done without a bass player and Joan stayed on guitar. I can barely hear Lita!
Thanks for writing Laurie ! after seeing you play in these video's, I must admit i think you were very hot, very talented. What have you been doing all these years? I just love the way that you played ! Glad you were a part of the history of the runaways ! Wow.
greetings to all you amazing people who still kindle the flame of rock-n-roll. i seldom google myself, but whenever i do, i am blown away by how many of you still care, Thank you, i am truly honored. for the record, i would like to say playing with joan, lita and sandy was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. i hold a place in my heart, for each of the girls, who were kind enough to let me share the stage with them. it was a shock to hear of sandys passing, it is with sorrow ...
sorrow..i wish her joy and peace, and a swift, comfortable, journey. Godspeed, sandy, the earth-sky will forever miss your thunder, and so will i, so will we all. goodbye dear heart,we will always remember you.
after the rurnaways split up, i became a member of the orchids, which were doomed when kim fowley fired our original lead singer, sindy collins, cuz she wouldn't fuck him, after we'd already secured the contract with MCA, and the papers were in denny rosencrantz's at MCA, waiting ...
@lauriemcallister Please name the name and phone next time of the creep. Best wishes to you. Oh didn't even know of the Runaways and just know Joan through her Replacement covers. Oh how did Sandy pass away RIP and was Joan the only breakout performer since the Runaways and did she do any lead singing with the Runaways? Sorry you can be very brief if you are kind enough to answer. Thanks.
I think Lita would have play more like a both rhythm and lead guitarist so the sound be more like should be with joan, but lita plays her lead, and in this song she and joan dont play the same on the guitars, lita is lying on or what to say, by the way lita is a fantastic guitarist
Jackie was pretty good, but Laurie McAllister-Hoyt is better. Why do I say that? Try replicating Laurie's style sometime. When you give up because it is so unique of an approach and hard to play. Many of journeyman bass players would not go up and try to play bass after Laurie for a reason.....
She plays on "Saturday Night Special" and "Moma Weer All Crazy Now". These are the only 2 videos with her playing that I can find. "Saturday Night Special" is a good example of her style, although I have seen her play better lines here in North Bend Oregon at McKelvey's with Bobbie Lidstrom.
actually, Laurie McAllister did NOT play on 'Saturday Night Special'. when this was recorded, Vicki Blue was still bass player in the band. however, she didn't even play bass on it. Lita Ford did! the producer, JohnAlcock, didn't think Vicki was 'up' to the job, so Lita apparently played all bass parts on the last album 'And Now...The Runaways', which included the songs 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now' and indeed 'Saturdy Night Special'. thank you!...ggx
Ya know, I don't know of any videos other than the 2 you can find on YouTube of of Laurie playing. Someone, back in the day may have video taped a concert. What albums she played on, I am not totally clear on. Like I have said before, I was blessed to see her play when she moved back to Coos Bay. She has a very unique approach to the bass.
Well, after she left Coos Bay 15 years ago, she went to Eugene Oregon to play more music. She has not quit. I talked to a man from Eugene Oregon that had played with her in the last year. Truth be told, she will continue to play bass until the day she dies-as long a as the past stays in the past.
A lot of people ragged on Jackie for not being a good bass player but I thought she was. Yes, the signature sound of the Runaways was Joan's rhythm guitar so they sorely needed that not to sound hollow.
