I remember this day like it was yesterday. This was at The Detroit Zoo less than a mile from my home. This man selflessly jumped into the enclosure to save this chimp from drowning, obviously not thinking about the possible danger he was exposing himself to. He was critisized by zoo officials for his actions, but to all of us he was a hero.
Whenever someone posts a thoughtless misanthropic comment about how evil humans are (to animals especially) I direct them here. There's a lot of good in humanity and I believe most people are fundamentally decent and kind. It's not the people that are evil; it's the corporations, the conglomerates. Don't blame the loggers working hard to feed their families. Blame the people that pay them for perpetuating this unsustainable system of take, take, take with no give.
i went to the zoo when this happend but i didnt get to see it personaly. I seen it on the evening news later that day but we had just left a half hour before this happen/
@JordoF6 first of all you've just shown your self to be a complete idiot! First you ask if a wild chimp is in Ireland then you call me a racist... Are you not aware that the Irish or any other country aren't a race they're a nation! What an idiot
I just saw this on some clip on TV. This guy is a hero, he is a father and a husband that risked his own life to save Jojo. What a world this would be if we were all willing to do this.
BRAVO......This is so touching....and that man has set an example for others through his actions. THAT'S how a real man acts...he sees an innocent animal that needs help, and he HELPS IT. If what another has said is true, and this man is a hunter, i'm hoping that this moment has changed his thoughts on that.
Heard an interview on the radio with a woman who has been fighting for the chimps for 30 years. She told this story, and said that this Nick guy said afterwards that before Jojo sank for the last time, he looked at the onlookers with what seemed like a "very frightened human look". After a short eye contact between Jojo and Nick, he told someone to watch his kids and jumped in.
Jojo the chimp was an orphan, he was never taught about the social displays of other males or that water was dangerous. When he was confronted by another male chimp he was frightened (had no idea what he was meant to do) climbed over the railing between the land and moat and nearly drowned. That guys name is Rick Sope i belive, he was a bystander who despite warnings jumped in and saved the chimp, despite being in incredible danger from the heavy body of Jojo and the other male chimps.

That man (although a hero and a very brave man) is extremely lucky that chimp didn't panic and attack him.
