Need to have undercover transit police do stings, cover each door and target routes where this is considered the norm. Fares are so exspensive because pathetic idiots like these don't pay. I hear in Europe they are much more strict with enforcement policies in place. Hop in the rear door of a bus for a free ride, leave the bus with a $190 fare evasion ticket, tends to make people obey the rules.
i am really puzzled about the muni. they know this fare evaders. but still nothing happen. they still have the nerve to increase fare and then let people can still get on the bus free.
They solved this problem in my city by designing the university buses with only one door in the front and a turnstile right in front of it. The public buses have turnstiles at the front AND back doors.
@LORDMCHUGH Well... I can't believe your PT is more expensive than ours: most companies in other countries with electronic ticketing systems have lower fares than we have in the Netherlands since our 'PT-chipcard' came around...
Muni has nobody to blame but themselves. The system is very flawed. Nobody is going to go all the way to the front, pay, and then move to the back (in trains). Muni should operate like an actual Metro, but because they have their system in the open and not fully underground, they should put a small gate. And also should have something like a fasttrack, that you receive your bill in the mail. You should scan it, and if you don't scan it, the doors automatically detect movement and close.
Used to live in SF and rode MUNI a lot. Always a grim experience. MUNI should post transit cops at the rear doors to catch fare-beaters; but then MUNI really doesn't care that it loses money. It likes to plead poverty as an excuse for bad service.
Biggest reason MUNI is losing money. Yes we can blame people but remember, MUNI never enforces its own rules, laws etc until now.. and i never or rarely see muni ticketers on buses, the same goes on the MUNI METRO.. muni has no one to blame but themselves. this has been going on for years and until now they take action? wow.. you must of really been blind not to see fare evaders.. oh well blame the citizens all you want but its muni's fault
This is very strange for me to see... what a nice, well-behaved passengers we have here in the Netherlands compared to this video.... I have seen this happen twice here... but all other times, everyone boards the bus at the front... as boarding at the back or center-doors is prohibited...
How are muni employees the worst offenders? The get a yearly fair that allows them to board on any bus without needing to pay. What does pay is their employment with muni.
I hate when I'm trying to exit the muni (38) from the rear and two big guys enter through the back. I have to squeeze my way through them. It's like these fare evaders got a football team going on.
oh my god! EVADERS THE SCUM OF THE EARTH! I AM SO AFRAID! THERE ARE hundreds MURDERERS WHO WALK FREELY ThROUGHOUT THE STREETS OF san francisco, but fare evaders are by far the ones that need to be locked up. gosh i hate this reporter, he is such an idiot.
.... they're not getting locked up sheesh. do you know nothing? HE's talking about how this is a problem. So you're saying that if some1 graffitied all over your house that the police and the city should care nothing. And once ur done cleaning it, it shows up again and again and you report it and they say "oh psh.. we got murderers and scums to take care of..."
@AznPwnageFTW wow you really are detached from reality arent you. how can you compare something as grotesqque as gratifying on private premesis to citizens simply getting from point a to point b. the reporter is beyond idiocy he is a tool. just dont see the importance of prioritizing this situation that you call a problem as anythiing to be handled by the police. pathetic!
MUNI has always been that way. Last year I took MUNI back from the Blossom Festival, had my money in hand and the driver was waving for people to enter the bus from the rear. I thought someone would be back there to collect (I live in Oakland), but no. AC Transit driver on the other side of the Bay will stop the bus, call the sheriff and beat your ass into submission if you try to evade paying your fare!

It's nice to see white people doing what people say black people do.

The trains in Portland, OR are notorious for this. They also tried "the honor system" on the buses in the 80's and lost about $19-million in revenue.

@peacekingz Breaking the law is breaking the law. The same could be said for why police officers need to handle traffic violations.
