  • Such creepy villains!

RIP, Nicol Williamson (Actor who played Dr. Worley/ The Nome King).

  • I love the Nome messenger! The minute I looked at this character, was the instant I recognized the fimilar work from a certain artist... Will Vinton. Who also made the claymation of "The Adventures of Mark Twain"... The Nome messenger looks somewhat similar to Will Vinton's styling of "The Mysterious Stranger".

  • The nome kings a greedy fcker I would sort him a few sticks of tnt a strike of a match and............. BOOM! sorted

  • Gnome King:"What about the chicken?"

creepy wall face:"There's no sign of the chicken!" lol

  • creepy wall face!

  • The walls voice reminds me the old guy in kung pow. Tanana neo sporin

  • A CHICKEN???? LOVE IT

  • The performances in this movie were nothing short of absolutely awesome.

  • this scares the crud out of me.

  • @NANYUKI Maybe he dislikes his stone form's appearance, but has to use it to access his greater powers? Or maybe he wants to scare them with it because it's much scarier than his human form?

  • Now this guy just worries waaaay too much about his cholesterol level.

  • That's what I call a real MyEggs.

  • Mario Robot

  • some of the best stop motion i've ever seen

  • PHHOISN

  • Best special effects EVER. It has stuck with me ever since I saw this movie back in the 80s.

  • Gnome king sounds like Jack of Blades from Fable TLC... o.O

  • What do those gnomes have against chickens? They're delicious!

  • @captaintaco2345

If you were paying attention, eggs are poisonous to gnomes. :p

  • @nandabun Oh, yeah. Right. But cant they just not eat eggs? It's not like the have to.

  • @captaintaco2345

I think perhaps that's part of the plot, and at least, the generic cliche concept. Evil dictator takes over, prophecy or mystic item (or egg??) can end them, so they remove that thing.

OOPS IT DIDN'T WORK, that thing miraculously survived somehow. Always does..

  • These stop motion effects really helped inspire me to become a film maker.

  • The bit where the gnome king died scared the shit out of me, ill still always remember when he says "Up next! Pump-Kin-head"

  • Um...why is she so much younger now that she's returned than she was in the first one?

  • @Nyghtshade409 B/c she's young in the books.

  • @Nyghtshade409 In the book, Dorothy was much younger than the actress that played her in the famous 30's movie, closer to the actress in this movie.

  • 'What about the....chicken?'

  • I miss stop motion, this proves it can be as good as CGI since it feels more real depending on how its executed.

  • Nome King is AWESOME.

  • I can't believe Return to Oz doesn't get as much respect it deserves, it captures the spirit of the original Oz books perfectly!

  • Ah, such good stuff. Good times.

  • Whenever we eat chicken at my house my dad and I quote the beginning of this scene :D. ("a CHICKEN?!")

  • @SmartCookie1220

    Haha, that's awesome! :D

  • Nicol Williamson is such a legend - he played the character Merlin in John Boorman's Excalibur, and was excellent in that too!

  • @UpperPaleolithicMan I agree. Both this role & his role as Merlin in Excalibur were straight up awesome.

  • The Chicken cracks me up. I love how the Nome King is furious about the idea of a chicken being in Oz!

  • I know... the second time he mentioned the chicken... his reaction made me sincerely LOL

  • Nicol Williamson rules

  • Incredible...I remember these stopmotion animations as a child...and it felt so realistic... and still is!!

  • 0:01

Jack had it with the same old same old of Halloween Town again, I see.

  • These scenes are also very creepy and sinister. The fiery red glow and the menacing voice of the Gnome King makes it seems like his minion is talking to Satan himself.

  • no wonder i am so crazy! i grew up watching this movie over and over again.... as well as pinocchio and the emperor of night..... the last unicorn.... HR puff n stuff...... and many other twisted movies.... very good movies.... but talk about fuel for a child's overactive imagination! lol

  • strange how the main villains have such unexpected weaknesses ex witch = water nome king = eggs

  • Daaaaang, as great as CGI technology has gotten in the last few years, there are just some instances where well-done stop-motion will always look ten times cooler. Such is the the case with this movie.

  • @UberShyGuy

I don't know about cooler but a whole lot scarrier though :(

  • @Bajsnissse

Certainly, it is. But to me it's also friggin' cool.

  • OH NO A NOT A CHICKEN!

  • gotta love the stop motion effects. Better than freaking CGI

  • @foamyfan231 Absolutely agree there buddy.

  • 4:04 is freaky!

  • Why is everyone so touchy when it comes to the original 1939 Oz movie?

It sucked! This movie was WAY better, and infinitely more faithful to the book.

  • I don't think it sucked... and this movie is TERRIFYING! It's almost hard to believe they came from the same books... Both are pretty good, but very different.

  • It's such a classic that many of us grew up with... so it was terrifyingly JARRING when some parents would come home with this movie, or in my case, caught it on TV on some boring saturday afternoon. You get used to something as cheerful as the original and then you see this and think W....T....F...!?

  • @DukeMachiavelli YESSSSS

  • I gotta admit, this movie has MUCH cooler villains than the Wizard of Oz. (No disrespect.) Mombi, the Wheelers and the Gnome King are all pretty freaky antagonists.

And I find the animation on the Gnome King's minion both cute and creepy at the same time.

  • not to be an oz nerd but the Gnomes in OZ are spelled Nomes.

  • The stop motion animation is awesome!

And the minion's face at 0:35 is sweeet

This one is darker and better than Wizard of Oz IMO

  • spooky animation but brilliant

  • This reminds me of "Labyrinth" by Jim Henson, which came out one year later, in 1986. That's kinda hilarious, ain't it? BTW, is this movie directed or produced by Brian Henson?

  • What's the voice effect used for the Gnome King?

  • Awesome. I love the "charm" that stop motion used to offer in movies. It's a dying art form (in feature films mostly).

  • " I FINALLY LAID AN EGG!!"

  • These gnomes are awesome, as is their king! The only thing I would have done differently for the effects is the part where he creates the cage around Mombi;I think it would have been more appropriate for him to make stalagmites shoot up from the floor and surround her, being more related to his rock powers. Just my opinion ;-) Everything else is perfection!

  • Will Vinton yo!

  • In the first movie THE WIZARD OF OZ, Dorothy is a very scarred young girl and then in this one, Dorothy is very brave.

  • "Your Majesty! They have discovered... The Yellow... Brick... Road!"

I love how the Nome says that! It gives me chills!

  • I love the stop-motion in this :D

  • I loved this movie as a kid but it scared the hell out of me

  • As much as i love the Gnome King as a villian (God he ROCKS!), I gotta admit I love his minions! Everytime the one from 0:05, 0:24,0:40 and 0:55 returns, he always entertains us with his diffrent moods and expressions that cant help but be enjoyable! I wish he were a butler! Everyone would love him! AWESOME SFX Crew! Claymation is a million times better than CG!

  • I almost forgot...Isn't the world of Oz an odd place for powerful villians? I mean the Wicked Witches weakness was liquids and the Gnome King Eggs! I wonder whats next....Pillows!?

  • Chickens defeat him !!!!

  • The whole Chicken thing is hillarious!

  • A CHICKEN!?!!?!

Lol what a great film, the wheelers & the headless woman scared the pants off me...^_^

  • this movie is great, loved it as a kid, love it now, the animantion is so good, scares the hell out of me everytime i watch it, especially when they all start dying lol

  • 85 Snazzes on the 100 Point Snazz-o-Scale!

Very nice indeed! The Gnome King is an excellent villain and the animation is fantastic. Way scarier than CGI, like the man says. The King has so many great traits: arrogance, short-tempered, powerful, malicious, and vengeful.

-I missed a lot of conversation though, between the King and Momby, and the King and Dorothy. "That's not fair!" "No? It seems fair to me. And my opinion is all that matters." Wow!

  • Definitely better than any CGI i've seen. That animation is really scary and the expressions make me cack my pants.

  • FUCK CGI, seriously the special effects and animation they did in this movie is some of the best. I loved this movie as a kid, still watch it even to this day.

  • Gnome King sounds like Darth Vader.

  • ROLFMAO so true!!

  • LOVE the gnome animation.

  • love this movie
