I wasn't the only one who wondered why Mr. Green Jeans suddenly knew so little about animals. An even bigger irony was how much music Captain Kangaroo recorded. Bob Keeshan admitted that his lack of musical talent caused problems during his tenure as Clarabelle. Besides many recordings, he also gave concerts throughout the country.
This is wonderful! I also had this record, b/w "Happy Hands", just as you mentioned. I think I listened to both of them about equally, and I recall the irony that in "Horse" Mr. Green Jeans was the person who needed educating on the various species they saw at the zoo, since on the show he was the domesticated animal and wildlife expert. As a young child, I just felt something was askew there....
LOL I was humming this song in the kitchen fixing lunch today. The version I had heard was on the Capt Kangaroo show but with two puppets: a little girl and her father and she sang "look there Daddy, do you see..." On a lark I typed in horse in striped pajamas here on YouTube and was surprised at all the responses. It is a cute song with a catchy tune. Thanks for sharing.
In NZ we used to listen to a version of this on the radio every Sunday only it was a little girl and her father "Look there, Daddy, do you see..." that was more than 40 years ago now.
Hahaha! Wonderful, thanks for posting. I'm 38 and grew up with the Captain and Mr Green Jeans. My mother still has this tucked away on an old LP, I think.
I remember this song being played on Captain Kangaroo, but kids (voices) were singing the song. Some young kid would say, Hey there, daddy, what I see, there's a horse in stripped pajamas, etc.
I am a 56 year old Grandmother,in Philadelphia where i grew up I would watch the Captain before going to school. One of my favorite childhood programs.I was so happy back then with my parents and 2 brothers. How things have changed.
yes i remember this song watching captain K and mr. gj and i have memories of tom terrific and crabby appleton, mr. moose bunny rabbit and the ping pong balls falling from the ceiling
Thank you so much for posting this. I did a photography class and sang this song. I remember this from my childhood. I learned about animals watching this show. If anyone has the episode on how to spell hippopotamus and encyclopedia, please post.
When I was a kid I had a small Captain Kangaroo book. I don't remember the name of it but the captain kept searching for a creature called a "Genuine no doubt about it Zebaroo" which at the end turned out to be Mr. Green Jeans in a zebra suit. Does anyone else remember this? I'd live to find that book again, but it will probably cost $1,000 instead of 49 cents.
I too saw the puppets do this on Capt. Kangaroo. I think they used the Eddie Arnold version. I use to sing this to my children. They never got to see Captain Kangaroo. They loved the song, but just couldn't appreciate it the way I did:)
I used to listen to this song on a double-record Golden LP with "Puff the Magic and other songs" on the other record. The version I heard, however, had another verse when Mr. Green Jeans says, "There's that fish wish whiskers on" with the Captain once again saying, "No, no, for real that's a seal". "And there's that Teddy with two black eyes!" "I told you that's what they call a big panda!" Otherwise, glad to hear this song again after about 30 years...
I finally got around to looking at the flip side. Yes, it is 'Happy Hands' I can't say that I ever remember listening to that song, but I must have at some point, right?
Thank goodness someone found this...I am over sixty and woke up with this song in my head today, and it has been coming back for years. Finally remember all the words!!
i too have had this song stuck in my head for 40+ years........i know it was different from the one i remember hearing, but good to hear nonetheless.....great stuff!
I'm 54 years old, and I too, still get this song stuck in my head. I grinned so much when I heard this again (after decades). I had the original record with the Capt and Mr. Greenjeans singing, but thought it was a yellow 45 rpm all this time.
Just in case anyone's memories are slipping, this is NOT the version that was played on countless Captain Kangaroo shows. That version was by Eddie Arnold and his daughter. This is a cover version done by Keeshan and Brannon that I don't think ever played on the show. Of course if you had the record with this version, it is still a nice memory.
Actually, at first they had father and daughter hand puppets probably miming to the Eddie Arnold version. Later on they had Mr. Green Jeans do it with Mister Moose (with Mister Green Jeans doing the correcting).
We were devotees so songs like this were our morning hymns. When we wrote to the producers in the early 80s, they sent back a lyric sheet with this and five or six other classics including "I Want To Be a Child When I Grow Up".
Me too. I remembered this song after I heard it here. My grandmother had it I think for the kids she kept durring the day or I use to have it. Wichever I remember it.
I loved this song growing up and I've been looking for it now that I have kids so my kids could enjoy it too! Thanks so much for posting it! I'd love to see more if you have it.
I used to watch Captain Kangaroo religiously early in the morning. I also used to watch Liberace play his piano and watch Captain Satellite..Remember him? :)
Thank You for posting this video. I haven't heard this song in decades!! I remember this being done by puppets on the Captain Kanagroo show. My life is now complete!!
Oh my....I have sung this in my head for fifty odd years now! So fun to hear this again after so long. Thanks!
