It's important to note that you have to be on the home screen to get this to activate your home screen again. If your home button isn't responding and the screen is black....click the power button at the top right of your phone, slide to unlock, then hold down the home button, voice control should come up.

What you can do if this doesn't work, you can go to your settings and go to general, and go to accessibility. Go to AssistiveTouch and turn it on. Your home button may not be fixed, but it is a alternative.

@ottocb22 flick the home button many times. White stuff will start coming out around the edge (that's the dead skin accumulated). This has worked for at least 2 of my friends (and I don't have too many friends with an iphone 4)

Guys believe it or not, it worked to me. . .seems like plugging in the cable and pressing down the button "keeps the button contact in place".

I had this annoying issue and randomly the button was unresponsive, like few minutes ago. . .so I plugged in the cable and tried and it just worked, don't know for how long will it last but at least for now I gut my button back, and fully responsive, thank you dude!

Sorry I should of posted that this will only work if you have a sticking/tempramental home button. As you correctly point out, if you have NO use of the home button at all then you can't (to my knowledge without jail breaking) close your open apps. Sorry.

If this doesn't work for you (it didn't work for me but I know others who have had great success with it) simply close all of your active apps. That's it. Just close all of your active and your home button should work again. It really does work.

I have the same problem too. Hopefully iOS5 will fix this and I've had some success with this fix. My home button may need to be replaced entirely but I'm holding out a few days. I think its more a software problem as a few days ago my voice control software just started turning on randomly.
