Of course great Guillem is formidable and Swiss clocks could be adjusted after her feet... =) But ever since I've seen legendary Ludmila Semenyaka's performance of Raymonda, she became the synonyme for this role for me. There is nothing brusque, nothing harsh in her Raymonda, just pure flow of the body & arms, emanation of gentleness and that charming Slavic humility flowing from her face, *just* pure poetry of the dance.
Gods, I can't stop watching this video! One of my favorite things EVER, possibly the best version of this solo that anybody's ever done. Sooo incredibly steamy!
@ILoveFriedFetus ... Dear Cannibal: I re-read my french-to-english translation from six months ago and nowhere could I find a mention to the Russians "owning" ballet. Can you please tell me where it is? But now that you mention it, I could believe this of the french, but the dutch and chinese? give me a break!
sylvie guillem is a goddess. she is everything that i aspire to be as a dancer. her technique is flawless. but i can only ever wish to advance to a level of such high caliber, because i cannot imagine anyone, let alone myself, ever achieving the same greatness. i can simply watch in awe and that will have to be enough.
What I'd like to know is what SwanPrincessXXI is saying in Russian.
I can recognize the letters but not the words! (can somebody translate the words?)
I tend to believe that Russians are authorities on ballet, since they have the greatest ballerinas in the world, so it would be very interesting to know what she has to say about Sylvie.
@flubished that's a myth. the russians do not "own" this art. please check some of the french, dutch and chinese dancers. people tend to think of russia as the producer of all the top primas, but that couldnt be farther from the truth.
"an iron will, a perfect technique, a great beauty and incomparable gracefulness give the impression that everything is easy, and what legs! One of the greatest ballerinas of our century. A veritable delicacy!"
@cpalmerston It is just my personal opinion, but I like Mariinsky Raimonda much better. See how Lopatkina dances it and you will know what I mean, although you may still disagree with me.
When she does those hand claps, it's so commanding! It's like - bitch you better pay attention - and then she intoxicates you back into submission again... so beautiful and controlled and amazing!
@solokevin He says "When she appears... When she appears, the music gets through to you bugs-nibbled-like : blame on the press photographers, doing everything that is to ruin your delight"
Une volonté de fer, une technique parfaite, une grande beauté et une grâce incomparable donnant l'impression que tout est facile, et quelles jambes! Une des plus grandes ballerina de notre siècle. Un véritable délice!
she is just amazing in this video. energy like a tiger or a black panther on a hunt, moving graceful like a down feather in a warm summer breeze. but there is also something very lascivious about her. like sex for your eyes :) and nevertheless you still see her intelligence and brightness in her movement.
she is just amazing in this video. energy like a tiger or a black panther on a hunt, moving graceful like a down feather in a warm summer breeze. but there is also something very lascivious about her. like sex for your eyes :) and nevertheless you still see her intelligence and brightness in her movement.
I love that you can actually here her clap. It just adds emotion. She changes little things and add nuances that one else does and it just exudes beauty
I could watch this ten million times and NEVER get bored. She's so captivating with her performance quality. And the fact that she's badass with her technique helps too.
Just took my breath away. Everything about this is stunning and more especially the fabulous footwork that speaks absolutely of the Paris Opera training! Thank you so much for sharing!
I have seen Sylvie doing this live in London. The whole Covent Garden was keeping his breath, no one moved, we were all like frozen. She created a moment of ultimate beauty, ever such french class, glamour and cristalline perfection. And the bow is priceless, so chic. After seeing her on this it is very difficult to see anybodyelse
@fabiolousful I saw Makarova in Raymonda live way before I saw this performnce - Makarova for me wins hands down. Her bearing and arms alone totally awesome. Her Swan Lake too made us all hold our breathat the ROH she 'rippled' and created such a mirage, like the set was moving, but it was her! Still, we are lucky to see such great dancers, what ever their nationality/training, aren't we?
Wow this girl is to die for! Her legs, feet, and grace are definately worth watching. The company tht I am drool over you when we watch u and our teacher is like think of sylvie ladies!! Anyways you inspire me sooo much :)
I prefer Natalia Makarova's arms and hand movements in this variation of Raymonda to those of Sylvie Guillem.
BTW, Makarova does not audibly clap. This is more than a simple stylistic difference. Natalia's approach to Raymonda is both proud and very regal. There is nothing overt to indicate any kind of folk dancing in her interpretation.
Makarova's version is very beautiful, but i do think that had to do more with the style of the choreography rather than the dancer herself.
Makarova is a great dancer, and this is not to offend anyone, but I find that Sylvie Guillem's amazing work is just not incomparable to any other dancer.
This Raymonda is so different from the one by Irina Kolpakova. This is so sharp and strong while the other is so tender and graceful. How come it is so different? (at first I thought this was not Raymonda at all!?!)
She's the only dancer since Kirkland to have that "STAR" thing going for her. If there were more dancers like this then ballet would gain in popularity again.
@jondavwal Couldn't agree more. Her port de bras alone is "worth the price of admission," but everything else is dazzling, as well. She and Gelsey are really incomparable.
and i totally agree with you. her dancing is so calm making the dance look really easy, and her bouree's are so elegant it looks like she's just drifting - soft yet strong and gentle yet so sharp.. sylvie guillem is a truly amazing ballerina.
still fierce... old video :)

The French man says:
"an iron will, a perfect technique, a great beauty and incomparable gracefulness give the impression that everything is easy, and what legs! One of the greatest ballerinas of our century. A veritable delicacy!"
Evidently the french man is correct!
You are welcome.

I dislike this choreography so much.
Clapping, looks so peasant, does not fit the character and very distracting.
She would have done so much better with different choreography.
