It is actually quite difficult. In general, the internals are quite different, because the ATF(E) rules are quite clear on parts interchangeability between the two, and "ease of conversion." There's lots of bullshit on the Internet about "how to convert a semi- to full-auto".
Converting a semi-auto to a fully automatic weapon is usually very difficult. In the US, you are going to have a very hard time selling a weapon if it is easy to convert to full-auto.
That's why the civilian Uzi is so different from the military Uzi, making the civilian variant fire full-auto is VERY difficult (It's designed to jam if fired on full-auto among other things.)

Actually, the fully-automatic weapon is legal for civilian sale. You just have to jump through the BATF's hoops, pay an extra $200.00 for the stamp, and wait about 6 months for the paperwork and background check. You also have to take out a second mortgage, because even though they don't cost much if any more to produce, they cost upwards of $30,000.00 because of all of the BS that it takes to own one.

Actually I dont believe converting a Semi-Auto to Full-auto is all that difficult. All you need is a file.
Converting them to "selectable fire" is the hard part due to parts being unavailable.

I own several "assault" looking rifles and am a productive member of society. people say "they are easy to convert"...not too easy.... not to mention its easy to rob someone...to steal.... all of them are crimes like making a semi auto full auto. criminals get guns even with tough gun laws...why take the ones away from people who are responsible? Mine are registered fully legal firearms that I shoot and store responsibly.

Actually, the fully-automatic weapon is legal for civilian sale. You just have to jump through the BATF's hoops, pay an extra $200.00 for the stamp, and wait about 6 months for the paperwork and background check. You also have to take out a second mortgage, because even though they don't cost much if any more to produce, they cost upwards of $30,000.00 because of all of the BS that it takes to own one.

Automatic weapons are generally illegal for purchase in the US except of police and military personnel provided they were manufactured post-1984 and the 1984 assault weapons ban. A civilian can only purchase an automatic firearm manufactured before 1984. Because there are few of these and many people want one,

Police and Military personnel, as well as licensed class 3 dealers are authorized (with some paperwork and for the time of their service/licensing) to purchase automatic firearms manufactured after 1984. These firearms are of course available for prices similar to what you could find on the semi-automatic versions of the weapons (~$1,000-$2,000).

According to the BATFE web site, machine guns manufactured on or after May 19th, 1986 are restricted to Federal, State, and Local Governmental entities, and are illegal for civilian sale. Any machine gun made before that date is legal for civilian sale to qualified individuals that pay the fees and fill out the forms. That is provided that the weapon was a legally registered machine gun before that date. It has nothing to do with the AWB of 1984.
