  • This channel was owned by Times Mirrors'Dimension cable.

  • Spotlight was A pay cable channel started by Times Mirrors'Dimension Cable in 1978.The Service went dark in 1984.

  • I worked for this company from 1982 to 1984 when it was bought by Showtime when Time Mirror (LA Times)shut it down. We up linked from a location in Laguna Niguel CA to SATCOM 3R.

This place was very cutting edge for the early 1980's!

  • I am waiting for the ad that says:

"Spotlight! Shinning Bright! We light up the stars with Spotlight!"

  • I am glad to see there are some of you who remember Spotlight. I liked their movie intros or channel bumpers! I hope more appear. I am still waiting for the Spotlight intro where the full ad phrase was sung: "Spotlight! Shinning Bright! Day and Night! We light up the stars with Spotlight!"

  • Can't believe I'm seeing this...worked there...great bunch of folks. Was sorry tp see it go.

  • Wow, used to work there...neat seeing the old intro. Thanks for posting it!

  • I know what movie coming up that is rated PG, "The Destructors" (1974)!

  • Ooh, I love these old-skool intros.

  • Great intro, neon colors.

  • Good intro, but it was awfully short.

  • I remember watching this on the overnight shift at Group W. Maybe they failed because their service wasn't encrypted.

A movie channel in the clear.

  • i'm still looking for someone with video of my old 80's commercial for spotlight with me as the guy in the promo...jc

  • has anyone found me in the spotlight pre movie blip with me running down an alley to a streetlamp, then, finding a man hole cover rising up, with the words, "spotlight movie feature"? jc

  • I don't have one but I remember which one you are talking about. There wasn't to much to do at a satellite uplink station on the overnight shift BUT watch Spotlight, HBO, or Showtime all night. Good movies FREE!

  • i am glad you remember the preview to the spotlight movie feature...that was me running down the alley, and stopping over the manhole cover, at the light pole. i wish someone had that on an old video...jonathan

  • do you remember the cartoon movies they played ? i remember watching some wierd cartoons back in 1981, one had a world where a young girl who was to be queen, played with a turtle while they guarded a flame that floated in the water and the end had her friend being transported by a bubble from the water into the sky and she didnt wanna be queen, and i also remember rome0 and Julie8

  • I saw that one you tube months ago,but haven't seen it since.Sucks,I would of liked to download it.

  • It was on here earlier, but it got deleted.

  • What was Spotlight?

  • Please Post More Spotlight

  • I totally enjoyed this,if you have more Spotlight,please post it.Thanks

  • I've never heard of this movie channel before.

  • It was A cool movie channel that showed movies only.Spotlight ran from 79 to 84.

  • I used to love this channel, and still have a few movies recorded on video. Does anyone remember the 12 days of Spotlight Christmas they used to play during movie breaks around 1983??? Way cool!!!!!

  • WOW! What a great blast from the past! Thanks for posting this!!!

  • I never heard of Spotlight;cool intro.Does anyone have Movie Channel Intros from early 80's?

  • Yes, check the links under More from This User..

  • Because I live out in B.F.E.;Cable wasn't available til'85'.Showcase looked cool, too bad it's defunct.I'd like to see some old"The Movie Channel"intros from early 80's.I thought they were cool.

  • I'm waiting for someone to post those. I loved the movie channel in the 80s. I have one intro from 1984 on VHS but its not in great condition.

  • If it still plays,i'd like to see it.

  • The Movie Channel was known as Star Channel until 1979.

  • this was around in early 80,s at the time our cable replaced it with disney channel sometime after it went dark movie chanel no way connected

  • That channel was way back before I was born.

  • TMC is a spinoff of Showtime and is no way connected to Spotlight. HBO itself dates back to 1972 but most people probably didn't get it till the early 80's.

  • Sweet computer graphics intro!

  • Spotlight replaced TMC here back in the Summer of 1982. Over a year later, when Spotlight closed, The Movie Channel was back in its old spot. We also got Cinemax at the same time this all happened.

  • Never heard of this Pay-tv channel. Is this the ancestor to the Movie Channel.

  • It was around when TMC started but I don't think they're connected. I remember when Spotlight went off our cable system in Colorado and they replaced it with TMC, but it wasn't as if it was still the same network and they had renamed or been bought out. Even HBO had only been on the air a couple of years by this point so I think there were several similar channels before the 'shakedown' as many folded because they were all competing for subscribers.

  • No.

  • @Jtaylor1 If I recall correctly, Spotlight was an earlier iteration of Cinemax.
