I worked for this company from 1982 to 1984 when it was bought by Showtime when Time Mirror (LA Times)shut it down. We up linked from a location in Laguna Niguel CA to SATCOM 3R.
This place was very cutting edge for the early 1980's!
I am glad to see there are some of you who remember Spotlight. I liked their movie intros or channel bumpers! I hope more appear. I am still waiting for the Spotlight intro where the full ad phrase was sung: "Spotlight! Shinning Bright! Day and Night! We light up the stars with Spotlight!"
has anyone found me in the spotlight pre movie blip with me running down an alley to a streetlamp, then, finding a man hole cover rising up, with the words, "spotlight movie feature"? jc
I don't have one but I remember which one you are talking about. There wasn't to much to do at a satellite uplink station on the overnight shift BUT watch Spotlight, HBO, or Showtime all night. Good movies FREE!
i am glad you remember the preview to the spotlight movie feature...that was me running down the alley, and stopping over the manhole cover, at the light pole. i wish someone had that on an old video...jonathan
do you remember the cartoon movies they played ? i remember watching some wierd cartoons back in 1981, one had a world where a young girl who was to be queen, played with a turtle while they guarded a flame that floated in the water and the end had her friend being transported by a bubble from the water into the sky and she didnt wanna be queen, and i also remember rome0 and Julie8
I used to love this channel, and still have a few movies recorded on video. Does anyone remember the 12 days of Spotlight Christmas they used to play during movie breaks around 1983??? Way cool!!!!!
Because I live out in B.F.E.;Cable wasn't available til'85'.Showcase looked cool, too bad it's defunct.I'd like to see some old"The Movie Channel"intros from early 80's.I thought they were cool.
TMC is a spinoff of Showtime and is no way connected to Spotlight. HBO itself dates back to 1972 but most people probably didn't get it till the early 80's.
Spotlight replaced TMC here back in the Summer of 1982. Over a year later, when Spotlight closed, The Movie Channel was back in its old spot. We also got Cinemax at the same time this all happened.
It was around when TMC started but I don't think they're connected. I remember when Spotlight went off our cable system in Colorado and they replaced it with TMC, but it wasn't as if it was still the same network and they had renamed or been bought out. Even HBO had only been on the air a couple of years by this point so I think there were several similar channels before the 'shakedown' as many folded because they were all competing for subscribers.
This channel was owned by Times Mirrors'Dimension cable.

I remember watching this on the overnight shift at Group W. Maybe they failed because their service wasn't encrypted.
A movie channel in the clear.
