  • That Muller trade killed the Isles for the next few years. I love the NYR vs NYI rivalry. It is the only TRUE NY vs NY rivalry. If you are a NYR fan who lives on the Island...go to Isles games. Vote YES on the new building. The Isles of the '80s were one of the great sports dynasties ever. Let's keep that history there. (Oh and from my previous post...I am aware that Flatley was not young at the time.)

  • I'm a Rangers fan and I certainly wouldn't call that '93 Isles team a scrub team. King-Turgeon-Thomas, Flatley-Ferraro-Houge, McCinnis-Green-Dalgarno, they had some great young fowards, a good mix on D (A young Kaspar was a beast) the only overachiever was Healy in goal. They had a bright future that Dale Hunter ruined. Pierre was never the same player after that hit. He was tentative, and avoided the front of the net, and contact. Then they made the awful Kirk Muller trade.

  • I hope the isles can bring this kind of excitement back

  • This Islander team overachieved, & fooled management into thinking they were a contender. Don Maloney was the GM at this time. In Oct. 1991 they traded Sutter to the Hawks for Thomas & Adam Creighton, & they traded LaFontaine to the Sabres for Turgeon, Hogue & Krupp. Sutter & LaFontaine were about the only players of great value & they wanted to be traded. It's hard to imagine another GM other than Bill Torrey getting more for those two top-flight players. They got younger, cheaper & better.

  • I watched most of the series here on Youtube and everytime Barasso needs to make a big save, he doesn't make it. Not once.

  • The second Islander goal in this game, the one by Derek King, was a terrible goal. King deserves credit for attempting the shot and using a Penguins player as a screen, but there's no way that puck should go in. Barasso had a nice career, but I wouldn't take him over many contemporaries of of his era, like Mike Richter, Andy Moog, Curtis Joseph, Grant Fuhr, Dominic Hasek, Mike Vernon, Kelly Hrudey, John Vanbiesbrouk, Patrick Roy and others. To me he was good, but not great.

  • The Penguins completely underestimated the ISLANDERS in this series, and add to that the fact that Pierre Turgeon (NYI leader scorer) was out until game 7 only caused the Penguins overconfidence to grow. And even when the ISLANDERS won games and showed that they had no intention of going quietly, the Penguins still gave them no respect. I imagine the thinking in the Pittsburgh locker room was ' we are the defending champions, we can beat anyone, any day, any time'. David Volek forever!

  • @ericthegoalie31 You are correct Eric; the Penguins never really took the Islanders seriously in this series, of course, I don't think a whole lot of people expected the Islanders to give the Penguins a major scare when it began. Then came Game 7, & we know what happened. To this day, it still remembered by many as one of the most shocking upsets ever. Also goes to show that you should NEVER underestimate your opponents in the playoffs...ever:-)

  • Talk about a scrub team...the Islanders!! Should have lost to the Penguins in 93 bjut Montreal took care of them. In 94, did the Islanders even show up against the Rangers? A sweep is one thing but to be outscored in the first 2 games by a total of 12-0, the Islanders should have just gone home and never showed their faces again.

  • @jckoby

I don't know if you're a Rags or a Shittsburgh fan, but how could you call that team a "scrub" team? The Isles made the Pens their bitches by the end of that series. Making the Conference finals is nothing to sneeze at especially without your leading scorer.

  • @mightandglory ............ur an asshole too, barraso was a efffn bum in playoffs after 92 cup!

  • @angelostallone

After 1992 yes, but he was a top flight goaltender for the two years the Pens won those cups.

  • Only in games 2 and 3 was he good. He let in 4 goals in game 1 and 5 in game 4 - and from a chicago team that had way less offense than Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh won in 4 straight because of their awesome firepower, not because of Barassieve.

  • That series win is historic, and is an Al Arbour masterpiece (yet another).

  • Just watch this video closely. Every chance the Islanders defense had to bury one of the talented scoring forwards Pitt had they did. They were so physical against the Pens in this series.

  • The Isles have always had magic, they will once again very soon.

    John Tavares.....................

  • barrasso was never a great playoff goaltender. he also lost the series in 2000 when he played with favored Ottawa which lost to Toronto in the opening round.

  • You are totally wrong, he has very impressive numbers in the playoffs the two years the Pens won the cup.

This Isles team flat out beat the crap out of them and wanted it more.

  • Barrasso was solid in their 2 cup wins, but not in the same class as Dryden in 71, Bernie Parent, Patrick Roy, Billy Smith in 83, or Bill Ranford in 90.

The isles did not beat the crap out of them. Pittsburgh badly outshot and out played NYI in that series (game 7 shots were 43-17 for Pittsburgh). Healy stole the series for NYI plain and simple, although I agree NYI was more physical.

  • You forgot the Isles badly outworked the Pens.

Barrasso still shouldn't have done nearly as bad as he did, the guy turned into a sieve.

  • @lakeerie90s

    I agree.

Barrasso is like Osgood, the team in front of him made him better. Not like Hasek, who carried the Sabres nearly all year, every year.

Now that we are on goaltenders, I have to give credit where credit is due. Marty Brodeur is the greatest of all time and I am not a Devils fan.

  • @mrceebees14 dude ur an idot, barraso was a bum in postseason,he gave up soft goals all playoff series u goof, and he gave up a goal from the blue line in gm7 vs florida panthers in east conf finals in 96.

  • @angelostallone

We will let the stats do the talking since you don't remember.

    Post season Barrasso:

    1990-91 12-7 1 SO .919 Sv% 21 games played

    1991-92 16-5 1 SO .907 SV% 12 games played

Those aren't good? You are fucking high or stupid.

  • hey asshole, cant u read, all my comments i wrote were bout barrasso.i know his stats are garbage thats why we lost.b4 u talk shit next time, learn how to read goof!!!

  • @angelostallone

You said he was a bum in the post season, that wasn't true. Was he a great post season goaltender in general? No, but he was a big reason the Pens won those two cups.

  • i got comments posted in gm 7,6, and 5.

  • I had a bad feeling after this game that the Pens were going to lose this series with their history of playoff horrors vs. the Isles (losing the 3-0 series lead on them in '75 and then having them on the ropes in '82 before blowing the game and losing in OT).

And yes, Barrasso played a bad game here, but Glenn Healy stole the series with his play in game 7.

  • sorry, but Barrasso stunk up the joint in game 7 too. the 2nd and 3rd NYI goals in game 7 are inexcusable, period.

  • Too Bad. They got dumped out by Isles.

  • just think if the pens wouldve had defense back then.....that wouldve been cup #3

  • Isn't play supposed to stop when the goalie's helmet comes off for the sake of his own protection?

  • I remember being at that game and as the game ended someone threw a stuffed penguin with a noose around its neck. Uwe Krupp grabbed the end of the rope and swung the noosed penguin over his head like a lasso...It was awesome

  • barrasso really sucked that game!!! wow!

  • Terrible performance by Barrasso in this game. Oh, what could have been...

  • Oh, Kaspar, sometimes I miss ya.
