  • This is excellent. The minor errors can be excused. After all, even Tony Banks made mistakes during shows. It's just natural. I'm actually aiming to be able to do this exact thing by the end of the Summer. Watching this video gives me hope.

  • Man, that low note on the Slippermen solo should be a C natural!

  • @danmist God! I have been playing this for over 30 years and YES I have been cocking it up all along. Many thanks. Do you play any of this stuff yourself? On youtube?

  • wow - NICE! Great ears.

  • wow - NICE!

  • Awesome!

    You nailed it

I really love the horns from the V-Synth GT?

What patches are you using off of V-Synth GT? I have one too.....

    Great choirs-love them too!

Very good fingering on the solos or single notation

  • @adrianh63 Hello again. In this case, I used the V-Synth (original machine, V 2.0) to trigger the SH-201's lead patch. Since then, I've made up a GenLead patch on the V-Synth which more closely approximates the original sound. The organ, choir and string patches all come from the Fantom with Ultimate Keys sound card attached. I really must get the beast fired up and practice this again. jj

  • FANTASTIC !!

  • great

    thanks

    Dez Sanderson

  • How about a " virtual" genesis cover band??

  • Check out a guy called Joe at TheDrumChannel. He's done the drums to this and has suggested the same. I just haven't got a big enough green sheet.

    jj

  • It will be fun,,, I have the guitar player, check out Marcio Okayama, he's the guy for the job... I can arrange a bass player too.. Couldn't listen to the drummer cos' he changed the audio track..

Plus, my girl friend can edit the video like a pro.

  • great job...very impressive...however in the 3sides live version, Tony play s a high C at 1:04 !!...just some trivia but you played the solo awesome!

  • Can't hear it myself but I'll keep listening.

  • Great job!!!

  • You're most welcome. Have a couple more to post then I think I'll take a break. jj

  • don't even worry about the misses. even banks misses. Kudos! great and impressive redux. Hell if you can play one minute of banks you should do the snoopy dance. lol Thanks for making me and others happy.

  • Wow! That was incredible!

PS - Did you ever find out if the TB response was from ...TB himself?

  • get's an "excellent" from me - great playing - few "ooops" moments but still brill - patch sound could be closer - Capacitor76 posting stiil the one to beat - flawless in every way.

  • badass playing, very nice

  • great well done ! TB

  • ...not...THE TB?

  • eh jock that was class.i loved it man.genesis rock on 4 ever.

  • Aw, Hell, yes....I played keyboard in a Genesis cover band in high school in the mid '80s.......playing this song / solo was the sh*t for me at the time. I haven't thought of this in 20 years, maybe. Thanks! Nice job!

  • yes! yes! yes man!

buy a mellotron and let's have a genesis cover band! i play drums and bass

  • hi, I would love to raise a Genesis - Cover project with you. I do my work in pretty much the same atmospere as you (I play guitar, bass guitar and keyboards) and have the same ambition. So if you live not too far from Vienna we can start tomorrow. Where do you live?m

  • Sorry Cas. Based in Scotland. Austria's a wee bit far for me.

  • i thought so. But I wish you good luck in finding company

  • If I was in Vienna, I'd do vocals for you , Cas... EJ, Dublin. Have you heard the song "You Might Recall", yet? it in youtube.

  • Just stopping by to have a look again. You really got that solo down. Very nice

  • Thanks again. I got your messages, still intend to do the green screen thing when I can.

    jj

  • That was great. Nice sound. I am a drummer and keep the Genesis sound alive in my home. There'll never be another group like them ever again.

  • That was absolutely fantastic! Thanks for sharing it.

  • You're most welcome. Trying to get Watcher of the Skies up to scratch to add.

  • Nice performance, i'm wondering how many practice runs! My favourite section of music of all time is from 1:45 to 2:35 but Phil is normally drowning it out with his dodgy vocals, there's only a couple of bootlegs I have where you can enjoy it properly - but now on your version I can just listen to it on it's own.....THANK YOU!

  • Thanks J, actually there were 2 splices in the original I did but you're right. Glad I was able to help. jj

  • aww, Overly harsh, dude. Phil had the soul of how to continue Genesis vocally.. he had it from the start. Gabriel fan purism is tedious, and limiting. why do it to yourself?

  • it's not limited and tedious. There's several progressive rock acts to explore out there. Like King Crimson and Gentle Giant. And also free jazz is awesome.. like Mahavishnu's Orchestra, heard Phil Collins were influenced by them while playing on Selling England... Why accept mainstream rock? When we can have the not so disturbing and also sophisticated progressive approach? Steve Hackett's solo albums... forgot to mention how awesome they are.

  • Fantastic performance......really

hello from a Italian Genesis Fan....

    i repeat....FANTASTIC....

  • Multi grazie mauri. I'm going to post another couple soon then take a break. Wot gorilla, Follow You Follow Me, Fading Lights (work in progress) or the intro to Firth of Fifth. Or maybe Turn It On Again and Abacab. We'll see, I wish I could record from overhead.

  • I don't comment much, but when I see talent and dedication in what individuals like you do, I make sure I throw them a comment. Excellent job, I still have a hard time with the fast fingers movement, but that's because I don't have the time I'd like to have. Great work my friend... GREAT WORK!

  • Perfect!

  • Thank you, well just about. I've made a couple of tweaks since then. I wish I could change the bum note at 0:44 and a half. Ah well...

  • What more needs to be said?? "Spot On!!!" Well done!!!!!

  • well done! you deserve more than five stars on this one!

  • Amazing job! it's very difficult and you did it! it doesn't matter that 1-2 fault(i'm sorry) you know how to play! It's one of their songs i like and you could follow the rythm and enjoy the song and you played very good! It's a five star job! Thank you!

  • I wish, were more muscicians like you¡!¡

the today musicians are and asholles who plays

    only shit

    YOU R AWESOME

i am looking for a keyboardist for my prog band

because in aguascalientes mex, theres no one like you

  • yeah, still playing at eckys usually on a thursday, been playing a bit of thin lizzy, alice cooper.but its only a matter of time before mr ramseys got us playing some genesis.i'll look out for some more of you're very fine keyboard skills.cheers.

  • Nicely done.

  • very good.i drummed with you at stage2000 with mr ramsey.hail the set.

  • I remember it well, thank you. The gig at Dave's wedding went well - I'd love to do it again. You still doing the Wednesday night sessions at Eckie's?

  • Really nice job - Very fluid on the fingers Please chaek out my version - Thanks

  • Many thanks. I've still to get the chords behind 5:30, and in the subsequent solo I only use 1 note instead of 2, but I'll get there. Check out Capacitor76's Cinema Show. Now that's talent!

  • Nice job there....fun songs to play, no? cracking the cage is still one of my fondest memories, as i was self taught and early in my career....... I saw tony banks screw this solo up 2 nights in a row; in rochester and buffalo ny back on the original lamb tour in '75....what are your opinions of the v-synth? i just bought a korg m3, nice to have a synth action keyboard, as most of my gear is AU plug ins now, but the M3 leaves me a bit cold.

  • Thank you. Always loved the Roland sound. As for the V-Synth, if I'm honest I have only scratched the surface - it can do so much more. I rarely get the time to spend catching up on all I've missed since my teens: VSTs (bidding on the Arturia V Collection as we speak), plug-ins, workstations, the mac (my new love). What I miss now is people who share the same obsession with working out 70's Genesis music. It's no fun playing on your own!

  • What type of equipment are you using here?

  • Fantom X8 with vintage keys for organ and string machine, and SH-201 MIDI-ed through V-Synth so I get more than 4 octaves.

  • Thanks. I should get the X8 or a Korg. Tony himself uses Korg and Roland's equipment.

  • Amazing! Great job.

  • Yo Smudger, great to see you back in action. How was rehab? Remember, sheep have feelings too, y'know. Keep at it with 4 strings, and maybe you can play a real guitar one day with 6. See you soon, jj.

  • Hey man my hats off to you. Genesis is not easy to play and you did very well. I am trying to learn the piano again and am still working on the major scales and cords. How long have you played piano? Will keep watching your videos. Thanks for posting.

  • Started at 8, lessons till 15, first synth 21, wilderness years (family, career), playing catch-up big time with DAW, MIDI and aspirations. Can't wait for retirement!
