Depends on who you ask. Most of the people who have moved here for Microsoft or Starbucks or whatever don't, because, honestly, they tend to fit the white-man stereotype. All they listen to tends to be pop and rap, even the older generations. The families that have been here longest do, though.
They are. I've been a fan for years, and they just keep getting better. They've had more influence than people would think, too - a lot of groups in the Seattle area have a similar indie rock feel. Some are more like parodies of MM than fans, but there's a lot of good music that these guys have influenced. If you like them, look up Slowly We Survive, Seahouse, Zephyrs, the Lonely Forest, and the Whore Moans.
@deer22 if modest mouse released a home video of their concerts and behind the scenes stuff i'd buy it if the number on the price tag was the same as the number on my bank balance.
like toymachine said it has no bass or highs but besides that theres really no purpose besides the fact that it just adds to the coolness of modest mouse. he's been using it since some of their earliest releases
The mic is probably a green bullet which does indeed make vocals sound what I consider a tad more intresting when you play epic sets like modest mouse does. I use one in my band and a few other bands use it too. A band by the name of Woods uses it for every song.
At last last MM show I went to they did the same thing, combining Spitting Venom and I Came as a Rat for the last song of the encore. FUCKING EPIC. I'm so glad someone recorded them doing this, eulogyoflife is made of win
i don't think words can describe how i felt when i heard this live. at the part when both guitars are playing and isaac is shouting i just want to run and go punch something or slay a dragon...
i strongly believe that anyone who has listened to the moon and antarctica, this is a long drive, the lonesome crowded west or even good news will agree that johnny marr was not a good addition because of his pop backround.
while i loved all those albums, i still think that marr was a good addition, sure the music isnt the same as it was, but it's still damn good music. i think marr just adds a new element to a band that was already pretty amazing.
i totally agree. Their early albums, even the old high school demos, have a raw edge about them. The new album tries to be some sort of strange concept album that didnt grab me the same way moon and antartica did. I wish they were the way they used to be, before they got popular.
I'm a much bigger fan of old MM. However, Johnny Marr isn't soley what has made the band worse. Isaac is older and doesn't do the drugs he used to. I wouldn't expect the same passion innovation from him now as when he was 20 and as high as a kite.
BTW Johnny Marr doesn't have a pop ground. The Smiths are the archetype of indie.
As long as Isaac Brock is fronting Modest Mouse I don't care who they add. And that's very true about Johnny Marr. The Smiths were not a 'pop' band. Modest Mouse is just expanding their musical ability. They're only getting better.
to put in a way that me and my friend also realized, their newer stuff has gotten more "organized". he hates it, but i like both new and old modest mouse, so its all good in the hood
Well said, and so true. Although, Good News did have a real structured song base as well w/o Johnny. I don't know if this new derection that they're taking is a good thing, especially with a band who is so respected for their freekydeeky old style. Regardless, you cannot deny new the songs like carbons aniversary. KILL THE EXPECTED!
Two amazing songs combined...Sweet! I wish they did this for us at Eagles, but they didn't play Spitting Venom. *Tear* They played it at Lollapalooza however.
"you were talking soda pop, you talk it quite a lot, the opinions that i do not give, and the opinions i aint got". that line is from "white lies yellow teath"! kinda rare but awesome. im partial to old modest mouse but this is my fave new one
This song was so good live. I just saw them at the Gorge and this was one of my favorites along with doin the cockroach. I love how issac started singing i came as a rat.
yea i was at that show i was a little dissapointed with the set list but that song was awesome. they gotta bring back some more lonesome crowded west and long drive songs
I saw MM four times and I recently saw them in Philly and it was one of the best shows so far. Their new material is great as always. My friend thought they wouldn't be good because he's only seen them on TV.
Terrible quality, but honestly this song is so goddamn amazing I dont even care

ill tell you what, i love em, i drove all the way to atlanta to see them

And I live about a mile away from where they all grew up. Which is a plus.

any modest fans know the reason of the second mike ? i know it makes his voice sound different but does anyone know a purpose if there is one ?
sinade06 3 years ago
yeah the second mic is to make his voice sound different lol
the whole purpose. it just has no bass and high on the mids and treble
he uses it in some recordings and uses it for the live shows too

if you listen to old mm and the new mm w/ johnny he added a certain structure to the songs
-like in night on the sun that song could begin anywhere in it and last a year long
the new mm has a certain set of guide-lines now it follow a
intro-chorus-climax-anitclimax-chorus- end
if you listen closely you can definately tell
