Hi - do all plantains have 5 ridges, spines? Are there any plantains that have only one? I found a plant that looks very similar but it only has one spine down the back - the shape of the leaf seems to be the same though. Thanks for any help.
@adamatova I don't know. There are many different plantains and I'm not familiar with all of them. This is not an uncommon leaf shape. You can't go by that alone. Identifying a plant requires a lot of information. I suggest you get a good book on plant identification that goes over all the details. Many plants are very similar and misidentification is very common.
Plantains are one of the best natural herbs for bug bites & drawing out infection when chewed or ground up & put on the affected area. I just started to learn it's also food. I'd eat it to live, but I've chewed the stuff up to apply to this or that, and it's not my favorite veggie at all.
Dandelion root is a powerful diuretic & can be toxic if you take too much. The leaves are very nutritious, compared to lettuce which has almost no nutritional value.
On the Broadleaf Plantain, the first thing you want to do is cut off that stem that is where a lot of the bitterness comes from in my opinion, wash the leaves thoroughly, then boil them for about 5-8 minutes.
Then heat up a small frying pan, with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of margarine , 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, and a few red pepper flakes thrown into the pan, and fry it until you reach the desired tenderness. This is an excellent dish i prepare and eat whenever i get the chance.
