I got a PAL Gamecube which is quite damaged at the corners (I bought it like this). PAL consoles are hard to find new, but the Japanese versions are still for sale boxed and brand new.

Is it the mainboard of the optical drive that makes the Gamecube a PAL or a NTSC version? I would like to buy a new Japanese Gamecube and set over the necessary hardware of my PAL version.

Im sure they know that taking it apart on the carpet may damage the consol, Usually consoles used in demonstrations such as this are defective and not concerned with damaging it. I got one on ebay. It's a small black piece that you insert in your socket to unscrew the screws on the bottom. I doubt you can get them in stores. Type in gamebit on ebay.
