The song was not written by either Ritchie Valens or Trini Lopez, La Bamba is a traditional Mexican folk song written long ago by an unknown author & was a dance from the Mexican colonial period. However give credit to Valens whose musical arrangement & recording of the song in 1958 made La Bamba into a Rock & Roll hit. Lopez recorded his version of the song in 1966.

Trini Lopez first played La Bamba well before Ritchie Valens, in 1956 in the Dallas nightclub where he worked, accompanied by top Latin musicians, e.g. drummer/percussionist Juma Santos who famously played with Astrid Gilberto and Chet Baker on "Girl from Ipanema". Trini Lopez is a brilliant live player, for me still the best in this genre.
This was of the year 1963 and here in my country this song was a huge hit !! awesome , thanks and viva Trini Lopez and La Bamba !! best regards from Chile !!
@xrayspexyes : He wasn't off the beat. He was on the "offbeat." Hip music lovers & musicians think that people should clap on the offbeat and that people that clap on the downbeat lack knowledge and soul. The downbeat is 1 & 3, the offbeat is 2 & 4. So really the guy that you think is funny is showing more soul than the guy next to him.

We must take into account that to many hispanos living in the States english becomes their first language. It’s only natural. It happens also in England with the kids of the spaniards and the latin americans. However, Trini’s accent is not bad and he sounds really well. For those who are interested I’d write the words in spanish in a following text.
@iMs0pHr3sH1 niether this is a clasic popular Mexican song to be more exact from the state of Veracruz , it is a SON JAROCHO, which was very popular in latin culture long before richie or trini.

I know that Ritchie's version is not the only one that exists that is good. One thing that I am glad to hear is that others around the world are still enjoying this song. I like many other different versions too, just not this one (ha ha)
Have you heard the version by Lila Downs? It's called.... Lila Downs. Los Lobos. Lalo G: La Bamba Remix . It is one of the best in my opinion.
what is going on with the lady with hat? think she doesn't enjoy the show..maybe her mother forced her to go and watch or maybe she had a toothache...LOL! If she's still living...hope she read this!
The weird thing is, that one guy in the middle with the beard and mustache is the only person in the whole audience clapping correctly. You're supposed to clap on the 2 and the 4 (as he is doing) not the 1 and the 3 (like everyone else is doing).
For those impressed by the good sound, para los que ven buen sonido, I strongly suggest, les sugiero, listen to both Live at PJ´s Lps. los dos albumes en vivo en PJ´s, Trini seems to be using a Fender 2X12" Twin Reberb amp and a Gibson hollow body Barney Casey guitar and the Bass Player has the ever present Fender Precission Bass plus Bassman Amp and 2X15" Speaker cabinet
Yes, it is basically the same type of chord progressions, I have played both.
Agree on good manners, worlwide young people seem to be a bit, well, less well behaved, as we say in my country, the cheap seats have invaded the playing field.
La Bamba is mexican folk song, first modified version is from 1958, oldies then Twist and Shout... I think that Twist and Shout is modified copy of La Bamba.. listen Tom Jones version of Twist and Shout... of course, I'm not music expert ..Tom version of Twist and shout from 1973 isn't Latino, maybe hi input in rock song some Afro style.. but after , more performer make mix
The intro to Tom's version sounded much like LaBamba but if you listen to Beatles version the intro is very similar and I think that is what Tom copied. LIsten to it. By the way, "Afro" is a hair style not a culture or a people.
@pogijuice9061: Good get. However, since the chord progression is just I IV V IV repeated over and over again, there's probably thousands of songs that are similar. I looked up both songs and they both are written out as I IV V, but what I hear and see Trini doing here is I IV V IV. I think the Beatles do that also. Of course, you were tipped off by Trini throwing in the "ahh, ahhh, ahhh, AHHH!" chord pyramid that is featured in Twist & Shout.
