i watched this one from the bridge in new smyrna beach (like 20 miles from KSC) and still remember thinking "holy shit that thing is BRIGHT!" i'm so glad i got to see one go up, such amazing potential we have
@GamingMusicVideos1 Shuttle retirement was mandated by President Bush in 2004 in order to fund his Constellation program. 2010 has been the retirement date since 2004 (now pushed to April 2011). President Obama cancelled the underfunded, over budget and technically malperforming Constellation program and has suggested a partial replacement. It is obvious that NASA is not a priority for the president, but it hasn't been a priority anyone since President Johnson - including Bush.
@DEFORCER throttle-up was said immediately before Challenger blew up.I will always remember those two words. No it was faulty O rings that caused the explosion.
@jimmysavileobe -what ?????? are you on drugs? americans did this! the english have nothing like this! AND not all americans are yanks, quess you didn't know that either.
what would be really cool is if nasa produced versions with all the interesting parameters of the vehicle displayed, air speed, altitude, fuel flow rates, combustion chamber pressures, turbopump speeds & other cool stuff, even if it were only synthesized data it'd be 1000x more awesome to see
I was at the STS-129 launch. It was my first launch and it was unbelievable. That's me standing just left of the clock at 0:24. I have my hands up in the air, ala Touchdown! The noise and the vibration from 3 miles away at the press site is something I can't even describe. So fantastic!
Ever since Challenger, I always get nervous when they go for throttle up. I was a high school student in my senior year when that accident occured and I cried my eyes out for days.
@DianaBoston It had nothing to do with throttle up. Throttle up is associated with the 3 liquid-fuel main engines. There is no control over the solid rocket boosters which were the cause of the Challenger disaster.

It wasn't one guy but thousands of people. And there's no such thing like a Nobel Prize for engineering...

@CelticReject Mostly Experements. like what haappens when you do this to this, and then compare between what happenes on earth with
1G to space with 0G. Also things like what happens to humans when in space and at 0G for so long.
