semi hard brush (80% maby), pressure = transparency, layer is set to multiply, color is set to dark brown to begin with, then he changes to bright purple/pink, then to a greenish yellow.

the use of the smudge tool is awesome

@madjunir It disturbs me when monetary problems get in the way of creative learning. I do feel in instances like these, that grabbing a pirated version of photoshop would be ok. It is a powerful tool that can help your son learn at his maximum potential. I would just recommend that when you can afford it, buy a legit copy :)

@madjunir Check out Krita or MyPaint. Both are free and open source. Gimp is a great tool for editing photos (it's goal), but these two apps are specifically designed for digital painting and very inspiring to play with!

@madjunir Hi, I myself am a graphics artist on an indie game, and we use Gimp for concept art and texturing :) Gimp is a very good free (and open source) substitute for adobe photoshop :) ... But a tablet is a must. I recommend Wacom Bamboo, or the Wacom Intuos4

you can see some speed painting videos with gimp which are very good.

if you gotten used to photoshop (which is not so easy either), then yea is bit harder to change. My son and i have a fresh mind so we gotten used to it pretty quick :)

@madjunir: If it ever comes a version for windows (currently Linux OS only) you could also get him Krita from the calligra-suite (former Koffice). it's a good paint application free of charge. Many useful tools like the Sketch brush etc and lots fun to use. Best used with a tablet tho'!
